My Mother likes to tell the story of when I was 3 or 4 and I walked from our rural home 2 or 3 miles to the tiny Ma and Pa Grocery Store / Gas Station down the road a ways. The folks there knew me and called my Mom of course. Apparently I just liked to hang out with the people there because I did it at least twice. I have always been a wondering Soul and now at 61 I have settled in Germany where I enjoy my retirement playing and recording Songs that I have written and best of all, spending time with my two beautiful and talented (now adult) daughters. Here in Kentucky, my son would alway have a head of steam to go after being put in « time out » for simple childish misbehaving. Some times he’d just walk out to see he had no plan. Sometimes his plan was to « live » with our kind old bachelor « river rat » neighbor (who always showed him his arrowhead collection & let him climb around on his boat in the backyard, then walked him back home after he thought that homemade jerky & MRE food was less-preferred) My Sam always came back home the wiser. I miss my departed kind neighbor, even now my son is an honor-roll student & had a solo song in his last high school play. Parenting is a painful art. I have a younger brother who was much the same. A baby escape artist disappearing in the middle of the night while the rest of us slept. My parents had to change the locks multiple times. The locks that kept him inside at last were slide bolts near the top that had to be operated together. He kept it up until adolescence. Any time we were out as a family, he’d take off. Turned out he didn’t like loud. So any time things got loud he’d find a place to hide from the noise and lose track of us. It made everyone so mad. These days we could just equip him with some sort of tracker. Fortunately he never got hurt on any of his escapes.
