    I am just sharing my experience with propping heavy fiberglass boats. In my experience you need a large diameter and large bladed prop for heavier boats. I have spent a lot of time researching this subject, and a lot of money on propellers propping heavier fiberglass boats like yours. Typically when you go down in pitch your want your diameter to increase, and your size of your blades to increase. You went down in diameter and down in the size of the blades on your new prop. You really need something similar to a Turning Point Mach 3 OS 15.6” X 13 pitch propeller. This is a large diameter and large bladed propeller. You would be amazed at the difference a large diameter and large bladed prop will make in your boat. Yamaha outboards run their best at the top end of the high rpm range. You need to be running closer to 5800-6000 at WOT. I would also suggest you calculate your propeller slip at 3000 rpm, 4000 rpm, 5000 rpm, and WOT rpm. Your prop slip equates to fuel economy. I went from 18% prop slip down to 7% prop slip at WOT going with a larger diameter and larger bladed prop and reducing my pitch by 2 inches. I also increased my top end speed, because less prop slip equals better fuel economy and more propeller travel through the water for each revolution of the propeller. The new smaller diameter and smaller bladed propeller you have will spin up quicker, but it lacks the thrust you need on your heavier boat. One of the reasons your four bladed propeller did not do so great was because you don’t need stern lift on your boat since you have a lot of weight towards the front of your boat. You need more bow lift which you have found you get more with a 3 bladed prop. I am only sharing my experience to help you, and I am not affiliated with any propeller company or marine dealer. I am a private boat owner who has spent a lot of time and money on properly propping my boats. I could write much more about this subject, but I don’t want the comment to be so large. I wish you all the best in propping your boat.

    Thank you so much for your awesome knowledge Captain I really appreciate it and the reason I didn't get a smaller pitch is because they don't have a smaller pitch 14 is the smallest and 14 and 1/4 is the only diameter that I could find out there I looked a lot Honda website and did not find anything this is the closest I can get and I only went down on diameter quarter of an inch which is not that much I was at 14 1/2 and I went down 14 and a quarter but I do understand what you talking about slippage at lower RPMs I do feel like it's slipping a little bit at 3000 RPMs but soon I'll give it a sea trial and see how it performs at sea but so far I raise my RPMs wish the engine is struggling less I hope I get this right soon the only bad thing is I have a collection of new propellers LOL. Again Captain thank you so much for sharing your knowledge means a lot to me👍👍⚓

    Didn't know that a Minn-Kota could push around a relatively heavy boat like yours so well. 400lb seems like a lot of extra weight to carry around, like having 2 of your best beer drinking buddies with you all the time. Nice that you got the main engine running within specs fairly easily. Hopefully all of your extra work pays for itself in more fish caught.

    Hey Capt. I’d do a couple things next to get the a better hole shot and get over 2.2 miles per gallon when on plane. - install bigger trim tab plates. - install the Bennett auto trim pro. It helps to deploy the trim tabs automatically to assist getting on plane and to auto shift port-starboard stability.. - replace engine with a Yam 250 v6 / sell your 200 - re prop as needed. You are not weighted enough for sea conditions and another person with their gear... always good to see your talent and growth of your channel Merry Christmas Cheers J.

    I would recommend if not done already. I have Bennett trim tab/plate, I replaced my trim plates with the same size (span and chord) with 3 inch down is fins instead of standard 1 inch down fins, The down fins help channelize the water flowing under the trim plates in turn help left the boat aft for faster plaining. This helps when the boat is fully loaded and reduces fuel use to plain the boat.

    Capt. Consider one 36v 50AH battery Li Ion battery. You’ll save the weight of two of your flooded lead acid 12v batteries. That will prob be close to 80 or 90 pounds. You can use an alloy battery tray as well and remove a lot of that 1” starboard. Also why did you anchor when you cold have spot locked with the new Minn Kota?? Your bigger flatter wheel is a trade off in hole shot to get on plane with your old wheel. That’s going to be the biggest fuel deficit creator. Not sure why you’re running at the top 25% power band on that Yamaha … it would be better at a constant 4500 to 4800 rpm. Check the performance bulletin on Yamaha Outboards for your motor to see that. Lastly that whale tale on your motor is a lot of water drag. But if you’re happy I’m happy. PS burger looked great. Tight lines and calm seas.

  • @OutOnTheReef

    @OutOnTheReef

    Excellent points, captain, but in my case, my boat is a little different. And it helps on the whale tail. On lowering the bow. And so is the trim taps. They create a lot of drag, but they need to be used at 1 point of navigation so it's all about what you need while moving on the ocean, captain. And for the main quota, you definitely need a 100 amp batteries. So that way, that last year a little while 50 amps is not enough.

    Anytime feeder and I'm glad you found this video helpful especially if you're going to be fishing with four people on board I definitely don't recommend it for a 150 hp motor Unless if you get very expensive batteries that don't weigh hardly anything that's another option for you but they are so expensive that they will cost more than the Minn Kota itself. I would bet that hydroplane is robbing you of rpm’s, top end and fuel economy. That has been my experience both times I tried one. Also, I’ve never heard you mention using your trim tabs. I have way smaller trim tabs than what you have and they work wonders at leveling and trimming my boat. I think our boats are close in length and width but yours has a lot more weight foreword. you should look at getting lithium batteries if you are concerned about weight.. 28-30 lbs per gr 31 size lithium compared to 70-80 lbs lead acid per battery.. other plus side is you get more run time out of lithium being able to run the battery empty compared to lead acid where in reality only get half drained before your dead in the water.

    Good choice going from Solas to Powertech. Solas has a very low performance rating in the prop world while powertech is considered one of the leaders. Which model did you buy? I’m running an SCD3-17 on my Cape Horn 17 (Yamaha f115) and I can hit 6100 rpm and 39.5 mph with a full fishing load.

    @@OutOnTheReef I’m actually going to drop down to 16” pitch but go to a Mercury vengeance which is a cupped round ear prop similar to the powertech PTR series. That should drop me down to around 5800 but bump my top end speed to around 41-42. Most importantly, however, is it will provide me with much needed grip. The SCD series I’m running now is a semi-clever prop with high slip. It’s super easy for my engine to turn, but also blows out easily and I have to have a heavy hand on the trim tabs to control proposing because of it. Finding the right prop, as you have figured out, is half science and half voodoo. 🤣

    Just a note to all the subscribers . . . we all love to watching the Captain's trips especially for those of us in the colder climates that can't use our boats for another 5 months or so. I'm sure most have watched his vid on how he collects a little from Amazon to fund his trips. I for one, simply click on one of his product links (use anyone it does not matter) then I go to the item that is brought up in the search bar in Amazon and delete it and then either search or enter the item I'm buying. As example I purchased my 85 inch Sony TV a few weeks ago for $2,000 using his Amazon product links. It did not cost me anything to do this and it helps to fund his trips. Even the small $10 orders ALL ADD UP. So let's try and throw the Captain a bone from time to time and if you are entering any orders on Amazon go to one of his vids, click on a blue product link and then change the item in the search bar to "what ever" you were going to buy. I think he also gets credit for any orders entered over the next 24 hours. So my TV probably netted him a $40 commission. What did it cost me... ZERO ZERO ZERO! Please enter a few orders when you can for the Captain to keep him going out on his trips for us to watch. At least he's upfront about ho he gets paid. Most of these other KZread vids are sneaky trying to use their product links, but they never tell you Amazon is compensating them! Here is his vid again on how he gets a few bucks for gas etc for his trips and P.S. . . . disclaimer: I am no relation to the Captain, I'm just an avid and appreciative watcher of trip vids, cooking and installation vids . . . kzread.info/dash/bejne/f6iKsZKEiM_Jl6g.html

    @@OutOnTheReef I’ve been going through the same process with my boat (24ft pilot house weighing over 2 tonnes with a 225 2 stroke v6) very similar experience and timeline as yours. I added 2 big batteries, generator and quite a bit of other stuff. I tried a 4 blade 17 then a 4 blade 15 wasn’t really much good after seeing your experience I put a 3 blade 18 with smaller diameter the real difference came by raising my engine but its a different set up from yours in that I have an outboard pod so the prop is about 4 foot from the transom and its light and day difference I’m getting 38mph now when i could only get 30 mph with the 4 blade 17 and 25mph with the 4 blade 15 and yes i did lots of hanging off the back changing props it was driving me nuts. Mines very heavy but the 3 blade works far better which is the direct opposite of what information the so called pros advise re:4 blades being better for heavy particularly stern heavy ones, SO THANKS after seeing your vid i put the 3 blade on very happy now. Still conditions change quickly and having to constantly adjust the trim tabs is annoying and slow to react those zipwakes are automatic (they use very sophisticated sensors to evaluate pitch and roll and automatically and very quickly correct the boat for optimal performance) and they are very quick (like ten times as fast as conventional trim tabs) however they do cost a bit but they are light years ahead of conventional trim tabs which are slow and manual based. I love your video’s your so similar to me love improving and getting things right on the boat and just love being out in the ocean catching the odd fish for the table doing a bit of spearfishing getting crayfish/lobster. Your wife seems like mine too she comes out about 30% of the time but she likes when she has a rest from cleaning and cooking so a cruise or resort type holiday is what she loves and you gotta keep your mrs happy but i find those a bit vanilla I’m much happier out in the boat having an adventure and at one with the sea captain of my own boat. Hi Capt How much weight u think was removed with the carpet. You got to substrate that from the equation. Look around probably you will find a couple heavy things to remove. Also I don't agree with testing with engine trimmed all the way in I would do the test either in mid or a little out trimmed since this would give you the true results . I'm guessing 5800rpm/38mph/1.8 mpg at WOT which isn't bad 400 pounds isn't a big deal. Your boat should carry easily 6-8 people and most of time is only you and your wife There is not much you can really do since the boat is underpowered as is mine The Yami 200 is a great reliable engine but slow one you start adding stuff in an already heavy boat. Capt In your position, I would sell the 200, you are clearly underpowered. Buy the cheapest 300 you can find in the market. Do not worry about Parker’s ratings, they obviously do not care about your boat, so why do you care about their “ratings”. You already have 400+ lbs on the bow area so it will offset the extra 200 lbs or so on the stern with a 300. It will behave like a new boat.

  • @OutOnTheReef

    the minn kota will reduce your top speed from 38 to 36 or 35 mph because your boat will take 36v system that is 3 batteries and total weight added in my case was about 400LB and that created a problem for me my engine RPM wen down from 5400 to 5200 so i had to spend $300 on a lower pitch propeller to raise 200 RPM. hope this info helps you cap.
