    so basically the cars are now parked where previously a second drive lane was and the bikes now have the former access road for themselves… Nice and showing a shift we also see in Amsterdam (Van Woustraat): Dutch cities aren't building bike infra any more - they now start removing car infrastructure, only allowing them "as guests", if needed.

    @@xw6968 they either park a little down the street and have to walk a few meters. or they park partially on the bike lane, but leave enough space for a trike/bakfiets to get around it without trouble. most cyclist will understand if a moving company or some other business vehicle has to park on the bike lane for a moment. they have a job to do and will only park there for as long is necessary. Quite a few of these 'as guest' downgrades in Amsterdam are horribly bad, especially late at night. There's not enough room to overtake cyclists, but since they still allow through-traffic, there's quite a few taxis that still do so. This looks quite a bit better, but i don't know the traffic flows here.

    I recently cycled along this whole route and it was very comfortable. I'm glad I never had to cycle there before it was renovated. Utrecht is really coming such a long way, I hope more changes will be added it could almost be perfection. I love living here, my own criqitue is that the public transport is lacking, compared to other major dutch cities. The trams (even the new extended one) basically all go just along one single route, so it can only take you from one place to the other but it ends there. There's a bunch of small train stations you can get to easily, which is nice but usually once you exit you have an infrequent (and oftentimes it doesn't even show up) bus. I know cycling is the major priority in Utrecht but there's lots of people that can't cycle and compared to Rotterdam, I hardly ever see anyone with a mobility disability taking public transport in Utrecht. There's frequent service for some parts but it fully stops at night, so you have no option but to take a super expensive taxi. During the day, the bus service is unreliable and the busses have to wait for red lights often. The trams are awesome; but they should have at least two more lines. Compared to Rotterdam, Utrecht's public transport seems like a skeleton. (despite rotterdam being so relatively car centric). Adding an underground metro is very expensive and almost impossible sometimes so even though that would be ideal, I'd take a compromise; simply having multiple tram lines. There's lots of giant big boulevards with a lot of pointless grass in the middle, that would be ideal places for trams. There's more than enough room. If they make it so that the trams have frequent service, it would *almost* be as convenient as a metro. There's a lot of oppertunities for new tram lines, including former train tracks (they can be repurposed to be lightrail for the trams, that's what they did for the second half of the current tramline), large empty spaces in boulevards, and what are currently big car roads.

    Utrecht used to have three ringroads, the central one was downgraded to be more like a street first, then the second ring (which I believe is this one , and actually passes over near my house) got downgraded. Now we have the third ring, the weird semi-highway with lots of traffic , and occasionally stoplights (very strange compared to what you see in the rest of the Netherlands). That one has been upgraded and has so much traffic now. I appreciate it being further away from the centre but the problem is there's still a massive road for high volume car traffic; the road connecting the outer 'highway' ringroad, to the city center. That is the real problem in my opinion. Cars as still able to drive fully to the train station on a massive road, even though we already have the better alternative (park and rides at the edge of the city, so you can park after the highway and get a tram ticket included into the city). Luckily, since this year, they are finally getting rid of that awful massive road and intersection (the one behind the central station). It will be fully downgraded to only one lane per direction! It will leave so much more space for pedestrians and cyclists but the intersection is the best part; it will go from the MASSIVE concrete jungle it is now to a tiny, standard dutch intersection. There will literally be so much room, that they can fill the space with more than THREE seperate appartment buildings *and* parkspace. It would be awesome if, after the reconstruction, you could visit the place and do a comparison! then and now.

    how could this get done in one year? In the US a project like this would take minimum 2 years just for the build, but a decade for the planning, design, public comment, redesign, budget cuts, redesign, public comment, then bidding process, then redesign, then public comment. you get the idea. In the end the project would probably be scrapped and they would just repave the street with yet another layer of asphalt. Then it would be another year before the paint crew could get in to add the lines. Ya know, because they are a different division and unconnected to the paving people.

    Vans are not allowed to park but they are allowed to immediately make a delivery or a pickup while standing still on a pavement or a separated cycle path but not on a so called fietsstrook where cyclists share the road with cars. The van door is open so it seems to me that they are in the process of a delivery or pickup so it is within their right to do so.

  • @u.2b215

    @@dutchman7623 That's not considered parking. The small van's door is open so they are likely in the process of making a delivery or pickup which is allowed. However when they are done they have to move or else it is considered parking and that is always prohibited on the pavement. The other van is on the separated bike lane and also making a delivery. Both are allowed without special permission unless when there is a special prohibition in place.

    Why is the fencing there? I don't like separators like that unless it's in specific locations for specific reasons, they visually and physically reduce the available space, at least they aren't high which makes them less of an issue.

  • @MrAronymous

    @MrAronymous

    For safety reasons. Prevents both cars from driving on the bike path as well as bikes from swerving into the motor lane. Space is at a minimum at this location so the seperation between the modes is vertical rather than horizontal. Their height is intentional too. They aren't too short as people could overlook them easier that way and high enough that they are not easy for pedestrians to climb over.

    @@MrAronymous Yeah, it's just normally that the hedges are enough, so I wondered why they have the still to grow hedge AND the fence there. Maybe the fence will be removed when the hedge matures.

  • @hanneken4026

    If a new hedge is planted, a simple fence (of some poles and wires) is often used to protect the shrubs from getting trampled or parked on and killed while they're still small. This fence looks too elaborate for such a temporary need, but re-using what was there already may be enough reason for using it. It's also better visible to any delivery drivers who might be tempted to stop there.

    That starting street is a bit rough when it comes to parking, they got rid of almost all of the parking for the homes/apartments there, did they move them somewhere else not shown in the video or did they just get rid of them? Don't get me wrong I'm fine with reducing parking spaces, but it seems like that first street could have kept most of it's parking if they had move the parking to the edge of the street like they did in the second street.

  • @u.2b215

    @@u.2b215 Ah yeah, I didn't keep in mind the occupancy of the parking spaces, that is a good point. So the city probably lowered the amount of spaces closer to the actual amount needed/used and not just parking lane because there was space for it.
