@@RosesAndIvy Utrecht hasn't been any quieter now than before the lockdowns except for in the evenings because clubs were closed from my experience. Dutch cities in general are just very quiet because of our focus on walkability and cycling, its cars that make the noise and they are barely present in our cities compared to foreign cities, watch this vid another commenter also posted if you want to know more kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYiKj9mwo92tp5s.html

4:50 on your right hand there is a small square. My father was born there in his fathers bakery. The historic house was demolished in the late fifties or early sixties. The reason was to enlarge the road and make way for cars. But the city council changed their mind and the road was never enlarged. A very nice historical house was demolished though. In my opinion the past Utrecht city councils did a horrible job. Up untill 3:55 it's all modern crap buildings which replaced historic buildings. The current city council is not much better. Edit: I checked when it was demolished, even found an old photo of the demolition. Predikherenstraat houses 34 and 36 were demolished in July and August 1959. Both houses were my grandfather's bakery.

All the houses on the right hand side of the street from 4:27 to 4:55 would have been demolished for that road. It is good the plans changed! Too late for that house your father was born in, but just in time for all the others. In fact that planned road would run until about 7:20 and the many new buildings in that stretch are mostly replacements of buildings that had already been demolished.

At 04:03, where that big advertisement is on top the building, left off the center, used to be an electronic clock. Nothing fancy but it was always nice to be able to see what time it was while on the bike, without having to look on your watch. To the right were some shops and while I and a fellow student walked past in 1993 on a sunny day, we were shocked and surprised that a man in a white Moon Spacesuit was walking out. They were renovating the shops and the asbestos scare had just started. I mean, the shops being renovated were open without doors and out walks this worker in moonsuit while we had no idea of any danger. Past these shops, at 04:11, the corner structure, was the old Postkantoor. Today's kids wouldn't believe how enormous a post office in a big city like Utrecht could be. It was like a big bank! Not seen in the video, when turning to the left at 04:19 is Het Neude plein (to the right), where quite a few cafes were (probably still are) often frequented by students. At 04:22, the alley-like street on the right, De Voorstraat, was about half the width of any regular street. There used to be a bus running through that street, making it rather dangerous for bicyclists and pedestrians alike.

I live in the new building at 11:43; a great place to reside if you want to study here in the Netherlands. This building was built especially for non-Dutch students. It's called "The Fizz" for anybody who's wondering. There's also a shopping centre right across the street, making it a great place to rent an appartment!

The building has it's own gym, private bycicle parking garage and is very well secured because of a special tag, which can open the gate at the front and almost all doors within the building (except personal front doors of course). At night, even the doors to the courtyard need the tag to enter.

Most traffic lights have detection loops, both for cyclists and cars. So faster green time for cyclists and then the last car passes the traffic light, the light goes immediately to red. Less waiting time for other directions. There are also detection loops 25 meters in front of the light, so when I approach the light, I have to slow down, but I do not need to stop. I receive the green light.

@@tigerius05 That has nothing (primarily) to do with cramped. It's just that 20-30 years ago, when parking spaces were planned, that size was enough. Bigger ones only started to get build maybe 5 years ago in my area of Germany, when SUVs started to be common. I drive a small car. You can easily park 3 of those in the space of 2 SUVs (length wise). But nobody talks about that when they complain that they can't find a parking space for their city tanks. Width wise the grows is not that big, but it's still the difference between "Yeah, it fits if you manouver a bit" and "one wheel on the street" or more common "one wheel on the bike path/sidewalk"

Taking a bicycle on a train is very inefficient, so the focus should be to improve the last mile transportation rather than everyone taking their bicycle on the train. If many people took their bicycle on the train, it would make the time and hassle to board the train much worse. Also the trains need to be much longer because more space is required. On top of that, it is not even allowed to take the bike with you on rush hours.

50% of the train passengers in the Netherlands arrive by bicycle. Taking a bike on the train is discouraged because of the sheer numbers of bikes you would have to accomodate if you would allow them easily. That's why there's bike parking at all stations, and ov-fiets. Many commuters have two bikes as well, one permanently parked at their destination station (colloquially callad 'stationsfiets')

Why are gas powered motor scooters using the bike paths, seems stupid and unsafe.

  • @agaistin

Another bleedin scooter at 10 minutes. Also a number of cars/vans parked on the footpath, early on. We have it much worse in Dublin, where it’s seen as an entitlement. I’m surprised it’s tolerated in the Netherlands.

I'm surprised your planners have allowed so much public open space to be dedicated to open air carparks around those blocks of units.
