Befaco - Burst (more than a basic burst!)

Музыка

TIMING INDEX BELOW TO SKIP AROUND AS YOU SEE FIT :)
Here's the new Burst eurorack module from Befaco released this week right alongside Muxlicer (links below). Burst is way more than a basic burst generator in that it doesn't just spurt a burst or triggers out at a set rate. It works with clocks or 'pings' to set the tempo/timing and then the quality knob and CV select a burst of 1 to 16 triggers which multiple in the space. So clock or ping it it with a quarter note then get eighths, eighth note triplets, sixteenths, quintuplets, sextuplets, septuplets and so on. Play these against other rhythms and they will be TRUE POLYRHYTHMS! None of the "this does polyrhythms" marketing rubbish just because patterns don't run to the same lengths (ask my about Polyrhythms, personal bug bear! ;) . The unit then works with a distribution control to ramp up or down the speak or keep them evenly spaced. This will give scrape or bouncing ball like sounds that are great for synthesis real percussion sounds. There's then probability, tempo divide or multiply and and end of cycle output. This can also loop to be a CV-able rhythm generator too. Really nice.
00:00 Hello and patch previews
00:42 Verbal Feature Down - ping input, tap tempo, looping, manual trigger, quantity settings, CV modulation, burst distribution, time division / multiplication, probability, tempo output, end of cycle EOC and main output.
03:13 Percussion Synthesis Claps - distribution, quantity, looping, polyrhythm, bouncing ball effects, probability, CV over parameters, EOC.
08:34 Looping rhythm / pattern generator - looping, ping, ratchets / bursts, CV over quantity, probability, end of cycle output variations.
12:12 Heavy modulation over a melodic patch - CV over every parameter while keeping things melodic and musical.
13:42 Subtle and musical bursts - added 32nd note ratchets to a bassline / riff. Using probability for variation and stripping back the density of the pattern.
16:30 Wonky clock generator - tap tempo, modulating distributing to vary a clock for a human / humanise or “wonky” effect.

    Fantastic video! I love how you managed to get the musical examples come alive without clouding the focus of what you are showing. I stumbled across the manual for Burst while visiting the Befaco Hangar space and was really pleased since I use a bunch of wider modules to make patches similar to the way Burst is laid out.

    Really cool - seems like an inspiring tool to add to your sequencer. What sequencers do you like the best? The Hermod seems extremely capable but possibly way too much menu diving and a lack of intuitive control. Eloquence? I quite like the metropolis - seems really inspiring. The oberkorn is extremely hands on and has so much direct control over all 16 of the steps of 3 sequences. Their new 'generator' could be great. I'm quite interested in that. It would be nice to save and recall sequences though but without getting too much complexity and searching through menus. I imagine polyend will be making a eurorack sequencer soon. All very expensive stuff though! The Doepfer A-155 seems pretty good bang for buck but perhaps not many interesting features to it?

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    5 жыл бұрын

    There's a lot of good sequencers around, first thing to do before diving into too many of the modules is to really think about what feature you would need or like. Then we can narrow that down to things that are suitable and compare with what's out there.

    Interestingly enough the wonky sequencer-driving examples at the very end are extremely similar to results I get by putting a complex voltage on the cv in of the clock of the stillson hammer mk2, particularly any out from the Erica Synths Octasource. Seems to achieve a similar result--a speeding up then a slowing down and in between, almost like an orbit. Looks like the TiNRS Wobbler can do some similar things.

  • @DivKid

    @DivKid

    6 жыл бұрын

    The Octasource is simple sources but all phase shifted right? Or does it do more than I've presumed? But you're right clocked things with CV tempo will do a great job too.

  • @NickHchaos

    @NickHchaos

    6 жыл бұрын

    DivKidVideo nope; I'm surprised you haven't done a video on it. It's my #1 modulation module. Basically an 8 output morphing LFO with cv over morph and FM, you can switch from 8 morphing waves bipolar to one morphing wave phase shifted 8 times which I think is unipolar. It's the best thing I've found to do complex mod, wobbler seems the first thing I've encountered that matches that.

  • @NickHchaos

    @NickHchaos

    Also a riff on the synthesis tech morphing LFO I guess but with more outs, or like an LFO version of their wavetable vco in a sense.

    In case anybody has the same issue, holding the manual trigger button for 5 seconds makes the unit omit the first trigger. However, the probability doesn’t work. When set at anything other than 100%, the first trigger is omitted. Wondering if mine is faulty.

    The output is very much correlated to the ping and time divider and multiplier. If the ping (either sent through CV or tapped) tempo is low but your input is at a higher rate it will pass these triggers out at a lower rate also depending on your time div/mult setting, which is also based on the ping rate.

    hey has anyone had an issue where pressing the TRIG button, or taking a TRIGG in to the Burst causes the trig outs to occur LATE - like an offset, rather than at the time of the button press or the trigg in? Right now every time my Burst receives a trig that matches the probability set it starts sending trigs after the actual trigger event. It seems like the first trig is silenced and the rest are played.

    you say: "the output triggering the envelope wich is openning the vca", I suppose this only works with synthetic or analog sounds... because a envelope won´t do anything to a sample for example...

  • @DivKid

    put a sample into a VCA and use the envelope to control the level of the sample in the VCA. Or sample into a filter, use the envelope to modulate the filter. Or if the sample player has modulation use the envelope to modulate something within the sampler itself. Hope that offers a few ideas.

    Hey G, always up for criticism and you're right there's a lot of really cool stuff to be had with both units. But as this is a demo of Burst I wanted to really focus on Burst and not push the combo on people. More time consuming (but learning is effort etc etc) between the Muxlicer video and the Burst video there's a lot to take from that. I did the video Juggling Rhythms with the two units. I smell a follow up video though :)
