The best thing about "Beetlejuice" was that it gave us the ghosts' point of view. Haunted house stories were always from the terrified humans' point of view. Not anymore!

I was in my 30's when this came out... used to watch it with my friend's kids when they were young - they loved it. The disturbing parts for adults didnt bother them, they didnt notice them. They loved to work lines into conversation like "I myself am strange & unusual." Actually, there was a Saturday morning kids cartoon show here in the US based on Betelgeuse where Lydia & Betelgeuse were best friends and used to play pranks on her human friends.

Mary, there was also an animated Beetlejuice series. 1988 was a good year for Winona Ryder. I had a big crush on her after seeing her in this movie and in Heathers. By the way, Beetlejuice 2 is currently in production to be released next year. Directed by Tim Burton, it stars Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara will be in it too.

The weird thing is, I don’t remember hearing a thing about Beetlejuice until a year after it came out. I don’t remember seeing a single commercial for it or anything. But then in the spring of 1989, it was everywhere for some reason. Maybe that’s when it was released on video, but I remember seeing all this stuff about it on TV and other places that made it seem like it had just been released in theaters.

I actually only watched this movie because I'd seen Heathers. Well, and because it was on sale in this retro store that still sells records, CDs and DVDs, and because I knew it had a musical adaptation and I like a lot of musicals so if I watch the movie and listen to the soundtrack, I have a pretty good idea if I'll like the musical (now it just needs to tour in New Zealand...). And I am aware there's a lot of changes in the musical, especially things like the source of Lydia's angst, Juno's morality and Beetlejuice's involvement starting way earlier and often breaking the fourth wall, but nevertheless, I like the movie and the soundtrack, so now I want the full experience of the musical. Point is, I mainly watched it because of Winona Ryder and I was like "You almost didn't cast her in Heathers for not being pretty enough? She looks adorable as a goth!" (For anyone who didn't know, the casting did wonder if she was pretty enough to be Veronica. Personally I always imagine Veronica as sort of ordinary pretty, not stunning, so it bothered me less than the casting director.

12:20 - The fly saying "Help me!" in a high-pitched voice is a reference to the original 1958 movie "The Fly". 30:54 - "So that's how that happened." - Well, they couldn't show how it's actually done. The person is beheaded, the skin is removed from their skull, and then it's boiled with various ingredients to cause it to shrink. Then the eyes and mouth are stitched shut and it's stuffed to hold its round shape.

It came out when I was 10. Saw it in the theater. The vast majority of the adult jokes went over my head at that time. It really is just a super clever, funny movie. To this day, when Beetlejuice kicks over the tree and says, "Nice f**king model!" then the crotch-grab, combined with the horn honking, gets me to belly laugh every single time. Just a highly rewatchable movie.

I saw it when I was about 10 or 11, and it's still my favorite Tim Burton film. It's bonkers, it's wholesome, it's extremely creative. There's a lot of unexplored lore in the world of Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice himself is an incredibly powerful being, and for him to be outdone by this young, loving couple makes the whole film romantic. Beetlejuice (3rd time's the charm!) is definitely a comfort film for me.

The part where Beetlejuice eats the fly and the fly says "help me, help me" is a reference to the original "The Fly". I barely remember it, I watched it as a kid. I would go with the remake with Jeff Goldblum, and Geena Davis, who is in this movie. It's a must-see, but it's gross, because David Cronenberg. The original is fine, it's okay, but you can skip it until you've gotten to all the essential horror/creepy-ish movies first. There is a disturbing final scene in the original "The Fly", and that's the one that's referenced in this movie, I won't give it away by saying anything more in case you do watch it at some point. It would give you nightmares if you were a kid and watched it when it first came out in 1958. Now, it's... not scary. But just because it's very old doesn't mean it's not scary. "Nosferatu" is pretty scary for a movie made 101 years ago.

Although it isn't addressed in the film, it is implied that Adam and Barbara cannot have children. When the realtor tells Barbara that the house is too big for them and it is meant for a family, Barbara face drops and the realtor quickly apologizes. Lydia eventually fills that void of sorts and they become Lydia's parental figures since Lydia's own parents tend to ignore her a lot or dismiss her.

This was a favorite family movie that we watched probably 20 times together. Learned every line. At some point, I believe we questioned what we were exposing our kids to but then we just shrugged our shoulders and enjoyed it. We found out later on the 3-year-old was a little traumatized. But she turned out to be the funniest kid - very creative. It worked out.

Also, when I was about 16 or so, my friends and I were video recording some comedy stuff, and my friends were in the background playing a Hockey game on the Sega Genesis, and in the background someone says "Beetlejuice? Glad you enjoyed this movie, Mary. It is indeed wacky and weird, but it's hard to expect anything else from Tim Burton. Michael Keaton brings a special manic energy to the character of Betelgeuse. Incidentally, you're right: Betelgeuse can't say his own name. The spell that keeps him sealed away also prevents him from freeing himself -- someone has to say his name for him. I can also explain what was happening to the Maitlands at the climax. Otho thought that he was conducting a seance (a ritual to speak with the dead), but in fact he was casting an exorcism spell. And I think you very astutely picked up on how he made such a terrible mistake -- he really DOES know as much about the paranormal as he does about interior design.

The guys on the "Mythbusters" TV show did a show about what to do if your car is submerged. It turns out that the thing to do, is to let the car fill up with water, and then it's easy to open the door. By letting it fill up, it equalizes the pressure inside and out so that the door will open. Of course, you have to figure it out so that you still have some air to breathe while it's filling. Adam Savage has said that so far there have been 6 people whose lives have been saved by what they learned on that episode.

Mary, your mention of quick change reminds me that Geena Davis(Barbara) was in the movie, "Quick Change," with Bill Murray, Randy Quaid, and Stanley Tucci.

I saw it in the theater when I was 9 years old. It's a staple in my household. Both my kids love it (5 and 11). My daughter, who is almost 12 is obsessed with Beetlejuice the Musical and went to NYC with my mother to see it on Broadway. Great flick!

No, Lydia is not just “an emo kid from the ‘80s”, she is the original emo kid, from before there WAS emo. All Emo is derived from a combination of Lydia and Eric Draven [Crow].

I saw this in the theaters as an adult and LOVED it. Note: Lydia was played by Winona Ryder, who also played the love interest in another Tim Burton film, "Edward Scissorhands". Mr Deetz was played by Jeffrey Jones, who appeared in Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" alongside 3 actors who would go on to appear in the "Harry Potter" franchise in central/recurring roles (we'll always remember Jones as the assistant principal in "Ferris Bueller"). Beetlejuice was played by Michael Keaton, who also went on to appear as Batman in two Tim Burton Batman franchise films (and three more of Burton's films).

Apparently, there are a couple of drafts of this movie that Beetlejuice was actually far worse in. He was at one point a demon instead of a ghost, and in another draft, he was a sexual predator going after Lydia, who in fact was also younger than what she is in the final product. Then on top of this, there is a fan theory going around that says Lydia actually dies on the way home and either freakishly accepts it or has no idea it happened, which is why she was able to float while dancing.

4:17 90% of people don't get out these days with these new cars that lock the door and all power windows stop working as soon as you get in the water. You're trapped. They do make a window breaker that you can attach to your key ring. It will break the window easily too.
