BEETLE! 1969 VW Bug

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So I've driven a Spicy Beetle before...an air-cooled Porsche 911. But never a normal, run of the mill, VW Bug. I'd never even ridden in one before! Well I took care of that, with this nicely maintained survivor Käfer from Wolfsburg...

I learned to drive in a 69 Bug. If you can master VW's gears you can drive any manual vehicle. I miss that car every day of my life. So much joy in that underpowered non-AC vehicle. But it was a joy to drive.

I never knew anyone who had one, so I never got to drive one until I was over 40 😂

@@DougsCars And one of the best things about those old bugs was the ability to jump start them by getting a running start and popping the clutch. I mastered the art of parking on a downhill when my battery was toast. ;). Did that for 3 weeks in college until I could get enough money for a new battery.

Best vehicle ever! Miss my old ‘69, known affectionately as Patchouli, or Patch, because of a primered patch on his left rear fender. Drove that guy all over the USA for 300,000 miles with only minor replacements. And, yes, you couldn’t own a VW without naming it; they were like family members.

Bought a brand new 69 with automatic stick shift. Drove it from Fort Sill Ok to Akron, Ohio. Left it for my wife to drive while I was in Vietnam. It did not agree with her 🥴. Once we arrived at my next duty station she insisted we get rid of it. I still have a warm spot for it even in 2024

Doug, it's dark red. The fronk release, there should be a lever inside the glove box and the gas door, there's a visible ring to pull opposite the car's interior! :-)

When I first joined the Army in 1987 a 1974 Super Beetle was all I could afford. Drove it from Fort Ord, CA to Fort Sam Houston, TX and then to Fort Carson, CO. (even drive it up Pikes Peak once, coming back down with drum brakes was exciting) I wish I had never sold that car, had more fun driving that thing than any other car I’ve owned. (I own an old Corvette…Beetles are more fun!)

Totally agree! My brother’s 1959 had no gas gauge so you brought along a stick to measure the gas in the tank. Had the one gallon unit on the floorboard to flip on if you ran out of fuel. Great car!

What I've learned about hinged pedals and VW/911s is you really need to push the clutch to the FLOOR, like really far down, or it wont engage correctly.

They had great heat for those that knew how to work on them. Engine coolant is at 200 degrees or less while a muffler is roughly 500 degrees. the shift pattern is a typical H ..you do not shift at that angle shown on ash tray.. they are very dependable and fun to restore and drive

Even though I got an email with your Chevy comment and it shows a new comment on here, I cannot see it or reply to it! They must be having issues. But to answer that question, I've kind of stumbled onto this amazing car network here in town, due to the mild success of my YT channel. So these vehicles just kind of show up for me now!

Great video, I used to run a '69 Beetle 1300 single port. Bought it as a rusty MOT failure, restored it but kept the original engine but polished and ported the heads. Used it on a daily 50mile commute for a year until it dropped a valve. The heating system is terrible. Used to freeze up on the inside in winter and the swing axle rear end could be fun on wet roads. Would I have another one? - no.
