I was on walking toward the building where they would perform. A car stopped near me. "Can you tell us where Peterson gym is?" I told him . It was the violist. City was San Diego. Back in the 60s

I had the extraordinary privilege of hearing the Budapest at the University of Buffalo in the final year of their residence. They played in a small amphitheater in the music department bldg. it was a winter night. There were various faculty members, students and stray members of the public in attendance. In all perhaps 30 of us. All were in awe of them. I trembled in silence. I dared to be there! In their presence!! Members of the quartet spoke before and after performing a movement or after full quartet. They were playing the full Beethoven cycle over the course of the semester. Their conversation was as if we were in their living rooms. Causal remarks about when they played a particular quartet in the or that auditorium. At times the referenced their own performance history and practices of this or that movement or passage. At times a thing or two about their own interpretation philosophy or musical beliefs. I was but 19, a sophomore then. The experience was so profound, so impactful in every way for me. The sound, the harmonies and balance of voices within their playing, the beauty of their playing itself were mesmerizing. The relaxed nature of their remarks turning intense, even argumentative from time to time about how to play ‘this or that passage pinned me to my seat. I knew I was witnessing something I would remember for the rest of my life. The next day and for months to follow, I listened to their recordings of the Beethoven cycle in the library. My awe has yet to cease. The Budapest introduced me to the Beethoven cycle handsomely. Thank you for this clip and the memories it evokes for me - and I imagine others who got to hear them play live.

Wow. I did this at UB in the early 70's with the original Cleveland Quartet in about the same circumstances--the Beet cycle.

Thank you for sharing that memory with us who are too young to have heard them as you did.

One of my two favorite quartets! The "old" Budapest and the Vegh were superb! Thank you for this.
