For Arthur Grumiaux, Clara Haskil was "the" partner. Irreplaceable: "Her energy at the piano was incredible, almost infinite. This woman, who has always been said to be in poor health, shows an amazing vitality and resistance. She is as if carried by the ever-warming, if not delirious, welcome she receives wherever she plays. But she remains unchanged in the face of the glory she will never really believe in. Lyricism and intimacy in the famous Grumiaux-Haskil version of Beethoven's violin sonatas. Haskil favours limpidity, a discreet romanticism in every way complementary to Grumiaux's absolute simplicity and elegance. This version culminates in the "Spring" sonata for its expressive lightness and sobriety.

She is truly wonderful, yet these recordings place him in the extreme foreground, with her quite far back; rather antithetical to the LvB innovation of true duets for piano and violin - note particularly, in the 1st mvt of the Spring, how the violin absolutely supersedes the piano while playing the Alberti 1/8 note accompaniment figure as the piano can be overheard playing the theme. Also, for me (very personal observation, and highly subjective) the Grumiaux “simplicity” results in more restricted use of the available colors of the violin 🎻 as if, dare I say it, the sonatas are an opportunity display his fine-ness of sound for 2 1/2 hours. On the plus side, he is presenting the Beethoven without trying to revise or overwhelm the original work, as some may be accused of.

When I was a college student in the late 70' s and early 80's only two activities gave me absolute pleasure : I was called a bookworm during those times and the second one was listening to your classical music through shortwave radios. And the music aired almost entirely was of Beethoven,Bach and Mozart ( all the three are still my favourite composers).I still have vivid memories of enjoying this music of great Beethoven .A Beethoven who never failed to transform my mood even if the 'mood' I got from the periodic exam might have been not pleasant. Thanks for stirring my memories of my student days!

@@classicalmusicreference It is quite possible that the error is in my system, so to say, but Mozart, in my humble opinion, simply lacks the depth Bach has. I mean all of it... Could you please recommend me pieces from Mozart and Beethoven to widen my horizon, to make me change my mind? Thank you! Btw. I am disgusted by almost everything that comes after Bruch, I mean in an epochal sense. Could you please also recommend something that is really-really good in your opinion from Wagner, Schönberg, Bartók etc. and their "fellows" from the 20th century? Thanks again.

They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. There have been many remarkable new uploads by the team at CMRR, for which gratitude. I can only laud the remastering which has reinvigorated the archive of so much great music and made it once more so alive for us all. This is another of the very special recordings. The empathy between these two artists takes these sonatas to another level. While there are many fine other recordings, these surely are outstanding. I will return again and again. Thank you.

If perfection is ever to be had in musical performance these are it. Such a beautiful concordance of artists that listening, there comes a deep sadness that they are no longer with us. This is a recording most welcome to KZread. The technical mixing is also as good as any recording can be, which helps.

This is a great contribution to the music of Beethoven. I think it's worth pointing out that Beethoven titled these works "Piano and Violin Sonatas".

I have these recordings on CD. This remastering is indeed an improvement, although I am still glad to have the earlier version. most performances I have heard of these pieces And I have heard many, are so exaggerated. I love all the recordings of Grumiaux, and, of course, all the Clara Haskil recordings. Not the only way to play, but a very, very great and musical way to play. Thank you for this wonderful remastering of this great performances.

For comparision: The second movement of the Spring Sonata for comparision: Taschner & Farnadi play Beethoven (on youtube), very pure played. It is the old thing, a interpreter can not at the same be time quick or slow, pure or emotional, loud or silent. Every interpretation is unique in time and location and in emotion and mastery. And we have the privilege to jump in time and location. Earlier generations had only reports we have testimonials.
