It's not classical, in fact it's Romantic. But it DOESN'T leave being, as you said, one of the most sublime pieces in the music's history. This guy was a punk for his time. Stop to performing in the high elites for recreating them and playing for themselves (artists) with creative freedom and turning their feelings into something were the most important issues from the Romantiscism in (all) Arts.

@@MrDarbol Classical music is the term generally used for any orchestral music, generally not including movie scores, but not always. And Beethoven wasn't really in tye Romantic era. His music was often very Romantic, but he was really a hybrid between Classical and Romantic. So it is classical music, even if you don't consider it Classical Era music.

Having performed both as part of an orchestra (violin) the 7th was always more "work", especially the 4th movement:) In background cinema/tv scores I hear the 7th used more than the 5th but usually it is variations on the 2nd movement. Could also be what I watch.

The second movement is so achingly beautiful. It drives me to tears, no matter how many times I experience it. Beethoven will always be my first love.

When we first practiced this piece in high school orchestra, I told the conductor that the 2nd reminded me of the durge they played at JFK's funeral. The rhythm and chords were similar, and the feeling of sorrow flowed in both. Love this forever!

when I was growing up I shared a bedroom with my two older brothers - I had a headboard where I could have a radio which was tuned to WCRB a classical music station in Boston - at times, I would wake up in the middle of the night and during the night the signal would be pretty clear - I would hear piano concertos and masterful symphony's like this one - it's strange how memories can flood into the present just by listening to, even, one or two notes from one of these most memorable musical masterpieces - have never stopped loving the greatest musical compositions in the history of mankind - that was between the '40's and '50's which seems like light years ago, sometimes - nostalgia is a wonderful thing

Everybody says that their favorite Beethoven's symphony is the 5th or the 9th. But this one is my favorite.

Honestly one of my favorite pieces by Beethoven... His whole musical career blows me away, but this piece seems to be in complete defiance to those who tried to say his work was impossible because of his disability. Throughout all of their naysaying, he held his head high and created some of the most BEAUTIFUL music ever written! Truly amazing and truly gifted....

I was listening to this to go to sleep, and I suddenly started crying around the 17:00 minute mark, it’s just such a beautiful song

Beethoven: I wrote a full symphony with four excellently composed movements. Joe the average listener: Oh, the second movement was good. Beethoven: What about the first? Joe: *Eyes start darting back and forth* Beethoven: ...or the third...? Joe: *Breathing becomes heavier, eyes continue to dart back and forth looking for an exit* Beethoven: ...certainly you must have enjoyed the triumphant fourth movement? Joe: *sweating profusely, heart racing and still desperately trying to find an escape* Beethoven: Are you deaf or something? Answer the question! Joe: *Screams incoherently, and jumps through the recently perceived window.*

Don't hate on Joe, he just can't express what he knows. It's like asking a child what they like about their favorite book. Do you think a kid would be able to tell you about the plot or character development or dialogue? They know what they enjoyed about it, but they can't articulate it simply because they haven't learned what is required to be able to express it. If average Joe knew more about the language of music, and how people communicate it, he will be able tell you what he enjoyed

For me Symphony no. 7 is the best Beethoven's composition . Incredible!!!!

Jonathan Ehrlich I love this one, indeed, it is soooo very subtle in it's absolute beauty. My other all-time fave HAS GOT to be the Pastoral, 6. The entire trip he journeyed out into the country and actually composed a thunderstorm! A THUNDERSTORM orchestrated! Nobody but the power of Beethoven could have accomplished THAT!

Jonathan Ehrlich I am moved emotionally most by the 7th and the 6th. I listen to the others occasionally, but there is a special place in my heart for the 6th and the 7th. I think the 6th and 7th expose LVB's technical and artistic genuis the most. That, of course, is a matter of opinion at best, but I would be willing to debate it; being a composer myself.... :)

The first time I heard the 2nd movement of this symphony I was 14 and, as usual, watching an Italian movie on TV. This one, about Rossini, had a scene in which Rossini, a popular composer of comic operas at the time, visits Beethoven in Vienna. As he walks up the stairs to the great composer's flat, the opening, chords of the 2nd movement began and continued as Rossini climbed the stairs. They were played with perhaps unusual slowness and, to my young ears then, melancholy. But I was entranced, as Rossini and I waited for the door to open, and the great man to be revealed. So did I. They talked. Rossini, who longed to be taken seriously as a composer, wondered if Beethoven had had a chance to look over the copy of the new, tragic opera he had just written and sent him -- I believe it was Othello, but I may be wrong. It was a long time ago. Yes, Beethoven said after a long pause, he had read it. He paused again, then looked at Rossini with gentle kindness (or so I took it). You have a great gift, an ability to make people joyful. That's what you should continue to do, Beethoven said in so many words. (I confess I don't remember them exactly, but that was the gist.) Rossini was disappointed, and yet consoled by Beethoven's honest, yet complimentary comment. To this day the 7th Symphony remains my favorite Beethoven symphony, especially the second movement. I'm old now. And as I listened to it, I fancied I might ask my family to play it for me one last time when the time comes.

I came to love the 6th symphony from Fantasia, as a youth, and I keep listening for others-- and The 2nd movement of the 7th symphony is mesmerizing. Thank you for sharing this story about Rossini. I will look for the movie, as I love foreign language films. I too have already added it to my Buybye playlist (also CYA, for backup).

I have never heard a single piece of music in my life that equals that movement. Maybe this is maudlin, but I have asked to have this movement played at my funeral (not for a long time, I hope,) in lieu of any words from a clergyman. No human could ever speak that much truth in a few minutes.

Yes. I first got interested in this symphony because of the second movement, but after listening to the whole work, I agree that the first movement is incredible. With the bright, lively and energetic theme(in A major which I consider possibly the "happiest" key) which almost makes me want to skip, I can almost see the bustling European streets of Beethoven's day, a stark contrast to the initial pathos, but also majestic beauty of the second movement. The second half is not quite as strong, but it's still a great work as a whole. One of Beethoven's more under-rated, and under-appreciated symphonies.

***** I have heard it(have even played the solo clarinet part) and it's a beautiful, serene movement, but I'm not sure I really understand what you're trying to say. Are you saying that the key of A major can sound sad? Or just calm and relaxed, not bristling with energy? If it does achieve the former, I would first disagree as I do not consider it sad, but if it does sound that way I would argue it's more because of the adagio tempo. If you mean that the music is beautiful, soft and serene, I fully agree. :-) Also, just in case you did not know, while the Mozart Clarinet Concerto is in fact written in A major, the second movement is actually in the key of D major. I cannot remember the exact quote, but I actually thought it before I heard the quote, that Schubert's Trout quintet has possibly the "happiest" theme of any piece of classical music, and it is written in A major. When I listen to it, I can almost see a trout happily swimming/dancing through the water. I also think of Mendelssohn's Fourth or "Italian" Symphony with it's bright, lively, playful and joyous opening movement, written in the key of A. And of course the energetic and rousing tarantella to finish the work, but I know there is definitely a lot of minor keys in the final movement, it may even be in A minor, quite an interesting contrast from the norm. It's quite common for a piece to begin in a minor key and end in the parallel major(that's A minor to A major, parallel keys), but very rarely if ever does it do the opposite. I know there must be numerous other examples of "happy" pieces written in A major, but these, along with Mozart's Clarinet Concerto as you mentioned, are the one's that come immediately to my mind. Oh, and lastly, I believe the second movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony is actually in the key of A minor not major, it opens and closes with A minor chords played by the winds.

This being owns 4 of the top 10 symphonies EVER made. Best piano concerto "emperor" best violin concerto and some awesome Overtures. This 7th symphony is up there with the 9th. When I listen to Beethoven I start to believe in the alien theory.

Beethoven is the best composer of all time.

Same for me with his Ninth.

Beethoven.... what can you say. All nine of his symphonies are gems, are masterpieces. This is true of no other composer!

It is a distraction to argue about whether this is the greatest symphony, let alone the greatest piece of music. It certainly is a superlative piece. Then again, so is Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, Mendelsohn's Violin Concerto, Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto, and so is Chopin's Heroic Polonaise Opus 53) and so is Mozart's 40th Symphony, as is Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachmusic, as is Debussy's Claire de Lune, as is Beethoven''s Moonlight, Pathetique, Appassionata, and opus 109 sonatas, and so is the meditative ultra simple Spielgel Im Spiegel by Arvo Part

+Marty Nemko These people forget how many "superlative" pieces of music exist.... but I agree.. this is a distraction from the true point... whatever it may be... anyway i don't necessarily agree on the word superlative... as that is a construct of our times, these were not necessarily superlative to the sound of me in the bathroom after a long night of partying on the superlative of anything you can imagine :)... Anyway, his (Beethoven's) music is truly representative of the Human soul, [as are many countless other pieces that 'Her Miastro' could't possibly list without help] and to that, there is no "superlative"

It is self-evident, and it doesn't need to be proven or deconstructed, however, that this superlative work, is among the _most_ superlative..... LvB represents the best of a vanished Kultur's artists. And, LvB's 7th is often considered among his half-dozen most superlative works. Consider a respected and erudite musical thinker ... Donald Tovey, and his thoughts on LVB's unique genius.....LvB is on a very short list that includes Shakespeare - - The Beethoven of literature ...)

I was in need of such suggestions of good symphonies, thank you.

I was able to tour and photograph Beethoven's apartment in Vienna where he compsed the 7th Symphony between 1811 and '12. They told me he was notoriously tardy on paying his rent.

When I was visiting my “Austrian family” in Vienna, we were walking toward a Heuriger (?) for dinner when it was called to my attention that we were walking in front of Beethoven’s home (not open to the public) and I just stared at it and reached out to touch the handles on the double doors and began to cry. But I cry every time I hear his music. Oh, you don’t want to go to a Beethoven concert with me!!😢💦❤️

I liked Zardoz. First saw it, was by myself; I found it at first confusing, embarrassing, disorienting and lewd, but then, it seemed to take bearings and snap into a straight story line; then it got trippy again... and then, at the end, an orgy of irony rushes in, for the kill. My first view left me wondering if, were i to see it again, would i pierce the veil and discern that it was all satire? -or not? All these are rhetorical questions, don't bother with answers. I have yet to see the movie a second time. I will report back here, when (if) I do.

I have listened to Beethoven's 7th probably a thousand times--and never grew tired of it. I once heard it live at a concert hall in Ft. Wayne, Indiana--one thing I could not do is sit still like everyone else that appeared to have super glue on their seats and armrests! How can you not move inside and out hearing this majestic, soul-stirring symphony? You can't!

I love all Beethoven symphonies but this is my all around favorite., thank you Ludwig~!

I can still today remember when I came at the theater when he release the 7th symphony, people getting mad of this beautiful music, crying at the end with a huge standing-ovation... those were great times, best years of my life, this symphony is timeless.

Wow, calm down guys, it's was a little joke...

Beethoven is chaos and harmony. The entire Seventh denotes that. The Second Movement sublimates you poetically and sadness you appear out of nowhere. The final moment of the Fourth Movement destroys your person Beethoven é o caos e é a harmonia. A 7a.inteira denota isso. O Segundo Movimento te sublima poeticamente e a tristeza te aparece do nada. O instante final do Quarto Movimento te destrói

His brilliant command of the elements of symphony, key usage, arranging, melody, contrast - well, Beethoven is a rare human being never to be underestimated. I am forever grateful for the profound inspiration and the graceful delivery of brilliance by LVB, JSB, and the likes. Symphony number 7 is something special (like time travel?). The second movement is truly a work of art. The pattern of sounds is so... thought provoking, something about is so beautiful, in many ways beyond description.

My late father used to play Beethoven’s symphonies a lot when I was young... listening to Soundgarden (a grunge rock band with complex alternative tuning compositions and time signatures) made me appreciate Beethoven’s work even more!

Classical music is celestial; it is a kind of projection from the Upper World.

It doesn't matter what brought you here, it matters only what kept you, devine music

There are some classical compositions that will be admired and adored forever. And the 2nd movement of this symphony is one of them. So beautiful, powerful, expressive... total masterpiece. When I hear those strings at the beginning of it, tears automatically come into my eyes. I just can't help myself.

Beethoven's music takes me to a different world I feel like I'm dancing on air when I listen to his music👌 beautiful.

Movement II (Allegretto) : It immerses you in you're feeling

I really enjoy how Beethoven's 7th was featured in 'The King's Speech', a wonderful film.

My favorite symphony of the great Ludwig van.... No question!

I never thought I could listen to a 40 minute piece outside of a concert hall in one sitting. I was wrong.

I LOVED Carl Sagan, I bought & read all his books. I miss him. I have the original Cosmos on dvd.

My day only ends if I hear a beautiful symphony like this.

I'm so sorry that I don't understand the language so many of you speak. But I'll tell you this: I have laughed and cried - SO OFTEN! - to this symphony. Seriously, tears running down my face while I just laugh out loud at how wonderful it is! There is a movie, "EROICA," produced by the BBC that imagines what it must have been like when Beethoven first introduced this feeling into the world of symphonic music. Of course, that feeling had probably always been there in "folk" music. My gosh, just listen. I realize Bach and Mozart and Haydn were precursors of the art. But Beethoven is the soul. There was another movie about Beethoven, "Immortal Beloved." I WISH it had been more about how he thought up his music. But there was (is?) a scene where the 9th is playing and he lays in a pool with the star reflecting that is just PERFECT. By the same token, there is a movie called "Copying Beethoven," that has a WONDERFUL few minutes of Diane Kreuger and Ed Harris (as Beethoven) conducting the 9th . Absolutely sublime! It all comes back to this music. And the 7th is just a pearl, the essence of each movement of the sonata form. I listen to thiss and imagine how great we could be. Tim Turner

By the way, the Leonard Bernstein 1955 Columbia recordings of the 9 symphonies are still my favorites. Crystal clear, with all the instruments distinct, and great tempo. Available on CD.

The second movement of his 7th symphony is truly amazing sadly composers of his kind are long gone but hopefully never forgotten true musical genius and his kind will never been seen again sadly .

This was a wonderful rendition though I couldn't help thinking throughout the entire symphony, "I'd really like to hear more cowbell."

That's the genius of Beethoven: you have to listen to the Cowbell that's NOT being played. (there it is, Buraz - the funniest thing you'll every type, and no one will ever read it)

Beethoven was diagnosed with Tinnitus at age 28. That means he wrote basically all of his symphonies and most of his work with a constant ringing in his ears. He was also completely deaf by 1812. He wrote this, the 8th, and what I think is the greatest piece of music every put to pen, his 9th symphony, while completely deaf with a constant ringing in his ears. This piece and especially his 9th are amazing pieces but you haven't heard the 9th until you hear it live with an orchestra. My mother was a violinist so I've heard countless pieces, including most of his symphonies live. There's no comparison to listening to Beethoven live. Beethoven was ahead of his time.

I’ve never been able to decide if I like this more than Beethoven’s 3rd or 6th and that’s okay because I have time to listen to all of them every day. I’m so glad.

Watched this live at the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. A truly magical experience that I’ll never forget. This piece will always be special to me 🙂 💙
