Nor did they (others) make these kinda harmonies since, either! The BeeGees sound broke new ground as a big risk, but like somebody else here said, inventing this style 20yrs after they debuted on Australian TV (as gangly teen boys who harmonised well) finally made them a massive worldwide (disco) hit!!

Until you explore their earliest catalogue of songs, you won’t truly understand the journey they were on. They were very much more than the falsettos that they became famous for in the later stages of their career. You’ll never see or witness a more versatile group. They were truly unique.

I grew up with this great group. They wrote all their own music for themselves & others. Love their early music especially 60's-70's. Barry has a great falsetto voice. Some of their early hits were "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", "Massachusetts", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "Lonely Days", "I Started A Joke", "Melody Fair", "First of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.

The Gibb family immigrated to Australia and the Bee Gees was created. They were kids performing on the back of a truck. They were called The Brothers Gibb, but a d.j. shortened it to The Bee Gees. Australians are notorious for shortening names. There are some cute videos on KZread of them appearing on tv in Australia as kids worth looking at too. They didn’t sing falsetto until mid 70’s. Lots of fabulous songs in their back catalogue to check out.

The Bee Gees (especially Barry Gibb) are some of the best songwriters of all time. They wrote so many hits not just for the Bee Gees, but Andy Gibb, Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton, Yvonne Elliman, Samantha Sang and more. They're English but lived in Australia for 8 years before leaving to make their fortune. Their falsetto music really only lasted two albums but they were some of the biggest hits the band ever had. Another fantastic Bee Gees song (not falsetto) is You Win Again, from 1987. Huge hit in Australia, England etc.

Barry wasn’t a falsetto in the group originally but changed later and that’s what made the Bee Gees a massive hit world wide. Nothing can beat family harmony. Andy wasn’t part of the Bee Gees but when he did join in with his older brothers the songs transcended. It’s a tragedy that only Barry is the sole remaining Gibb brother left.

Hi Nick , I just finished listening to the Bee Gee's and thought you might like to know the Bee Gees lived across the road from me on Bunnerong Road in Kingsford Sydney, their house got bulldozed down about 6years ago. As I just found out after living across the road for 3years i was very sadly upset as they lived in the house for about 4 years before going overseas. What a shame that happened as they are a great Australian band and the house should of been saved.

The third one in this clip is Maurice (pronounced Morris) who is Robin’s twin brother. They had about 10 years of hits before the falsetto came into it. You should try ‘Jive Talking’, and ‘Spicks & Specks’ from one of their Australia tours after they were huge. Spicks & Specks was hitting no. 1 in Australia (Sydney at least) while the Gibbs were leaving. They had a few other UK & US hits in the early 60’ & 70s. BTW they call their 70s music RnB and don’t consider it disco. I recently saw that the town of Redcliffe (just north of Brisbane Aust) has a dedicated Bee Gee’s Way with Statues, murals and information. Redcliffe is where they got their start before heading back to the UK and stardom.

Once of their best collaborations was not long before before Robin passed away. Barry wrote Immortality specifically for Celine Dion and she has always said how honoured she was. They sing with her on the chorus and there’s a great making of video. I think they were more thrilled then she was. It’s wonderful to see such successful artists who all stayed humble & have appreciation for each other.

Earlier in their career, Barry Gibb wrote a song for Otis Redding and he died before it was recorded, so the Bee Gees recorded it. Its called "To Love Somebody". And for contrast, Jimmy Barnes later recorded it in a way that he thought Otis Redding would have handled it. You should take a look at that too. I think Otis would have knocked it out of the park.

What else did they do? Allow me to whip out their long catalogue. I think they may still hold the record for the most songs in the top ten US billboard at one time. This was due to Saturday Night Fever of course. After the Bee Gees agreed to the music deal in the film, and on watching, they didn't realise what they had got themselves into. The film was quite gritty and full of certain language, it had some very serious, realistic themes. They were naturally concerned about image. The rest is history.

This video is from a live performance at "The Music for UNICEF Concert: A Gift of Song". It was a benefit concert of popular music held in the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on January 9, 1979. It was intended to raise money for UNICEF world hunger programs and to mark the beginning of the International Year of the Child. The Bee Gees donated this song to UNICEF. They made about 11 million dollars on royalties for charity. Barry (in the middle), Robin with the long blond hair, and Maurice. They are all brothers. Robin and Maurice are fraternal twins. Andy is the 4th brother who went off on his own. They did a lot of songs without falsetto. Their voices were versatile. This video is from 1978.
