These Brothers could sing, and play Rock, R&B, Folk, Country, and Gospel! I know no other group that was so versatile.

This is from the TV Movie, "Cucumber Castle" (1970) that Barry and Mo did when Robin took a bit of a break from the group. This song was released as a single in 1969, and was a UK hit at about the same time as Robin's solo song "Saved By the Bell" charted. The movie is silly, as any of them would tell you. However, there is some great music. You can't miss "Bury me Down by the River." Unbelievable gospel sound. Oh...and Engelbert Humperdinck did cover another song from "Cucumber Castle" called "Sweetheart."

Country Bee Gees! They could sing any genre! This was during the 18 months they split up. Robin left the group but they all got back together. Robin said they were still very young (around 19), had a lot of egos, etc., but they missed each other and in the time they had split, they did a lot of growing up. The rest is history!

This was from their album and "movie" "Cucumber Castle" which they made during the time they had broken up. Robin had gone solo early 1969 after a fight with Barry, who continued with Maurice. Guitarist Vince Meloney had also left the group, so The Beegees consisted only of Barry, Maurice and drummer Colin Peterson (who was fired halfway through shooting the movie). It was a crazy TV movie, very 1960s (as in the participants were probably completely stoned and/or drunk during filming). Big names were in the "cast": Barry and Maurice played two princes, Frankie Howerd their dying king/father, Lulu as Lulu the cook, Spike Milligan as the court jester, Julian Orchard as Julian the Lord Chamberlaine Vincent Price as Wicked Count Voxville, Ginger Baker as himself, Eric Clapton as himself (as Blind Faith), Ric Grech as himself (as Blind Faith), Steve Winwood as himself (as Blind Faith) Roger Daltrey as himself (uncredited), Donovan as himself (uncredited), Marianne Faithfull as herself (uncredited), Mick Jagger as himself (uncredited).

They made 4 of the songs before Stigwood approached them for some songs for the Saturday Night Fever LP! They were working on their new LP in France, they weren't a disco group, only people who don't know the guys would say that. Furthermore, they were doing R&B.

Skeeter Davis and Donna Fargo both covered it… and Elton John!!… among others. The B side of the Bee Gees single is THE LORD - their nod towards Johnny Cash. Englebert covered Sweetheart very well, but I still like the Bee Gees’ version best. If you want to hear a Maurice solo from Cucumber Castle try DOGS, which is a bit in the style of Paul Simon.

@@kthor I think it's Barry's soulful vocals that we love so much on that track and just that it's so different from what you expect. It was at the beginning of my Bee Gees journey and I was just blown away by the variety. I think most people who don't think they like Bee Gees just don't care for the late 70s version of Bee Gees, so I hit em with a few things from different eras and it usually peaks their interest. "Wait, what? That's Bee Gees?"

There's only 2 of them because The Bee Gees split up briefly around 1969. Robin left to pursue a solo career while Barry and Marice continued on as the Bee Gees. They were split up for roughly 18 months, then realized that they all really missed each other. They got back together and promised each other that they would never do that again. They followed all this up by putting out the album "2 Years On" and then the incredible "Trafalgar" album. It's interesting to note that all 3 of them made solo albums during this period. Robin put out "Robin's Reign", which was released but went nowhere. The Barry and Marice albums were never released and are still sitting around in a vault somewhere.

Love this song ! .. Very close to being my favourite by the Bee Gees .. There's a great use of it in an enjoyably quirky Russell Crowe movie called "Heaven's Burning", about a couple on the run in the Australian outback .. As they are falling for each other, they do a slow dance to this song at a country bush dance .. It's very effective and quite a beautiful scene .. I recommend the movie.

Great observation Harri, about this being very much in the style of song that Engelbert Humperdinck would have done in his heyday .. I totally adore this fantastic song as performed by the wonderful Bee Gees, but I could absolutely hear in my head how it would sound if done by EH .. It would have suited him perfectly, and I'm sure he would have done it justice.

Actually only Barry and Mo did this one 7:50 7:52 for a movie called Cucumber Castle. Robin had decided to try and go off on his own at the time. Mo was a teen and Barry I think was 20 or around there. But this was during their breakup period. This song did chart. About the same time as one of Robin's so it probably rubbed them a bit at the time, but they got a bit of a laugh about it years later, joking, "We got to number 2, who was the ba$!@rd keeping us all out of number 1? Our wives didn't care the way we did when we talked to each other. We missed that."
