One of my first jobs was with Midway Airlines, 1984, PHL. I recall flying to Chicago many times; partying on Rush St., meeting columnist Mike Royko down in Lower Whacker below the Tribune Building (The Billy Goat, of “chee-burger, no Coke -Pepsi fame), and Giordano’s stuffed pizza (which Rules over Uno, BTW). Oh, the view from up the top o’the Handcock Building! I still have old Comisky Park White Sox tix from Sept. 1990. The music of Chicago is soooo American, but Canada feels closer there, culturally, than from Niagara Falls. Our Great Lakes region is truly a worldwide treasure, and a significant geographic force bolstering New York State and N.Y. City!

It really is quite special-- and I wasn't so aware of Chicago's history even though it was a vacation spot during my early childhood. What moved me so much was that while nostalgia always affects me, I hadn't thought about how much it affected generations before us and the piece I used from Fanny Butcher captures the same sense of longing.

I live about an hour from Chicago and have been there a few times. I have lived in Milwaukee Wisconsin most of my life and I absolutely ❤️ winter and your stories too. They help me fall a sleep nightly. Now I have my wife listening to them nightly wirh me too lol thank you....

When I was young I was allowed to celebrate Santa and Xmas. I remember each year wearing my pjs with the little attached feet and coming downstairs to stuffed stockings (moms nylons) and tons of presents. I remember them all. Later on in life I celebrated vicariously through my Christian friends and their families. Until they all moved away or our friendships took different journeys. Singing carols with my friends playing in Xmas performances in school band decorating trees in classroom with canned snow. Still remember the smell of it. I think, I wish, I pray that this Xmas the world takes a deep breath and realizes that we are taking the wrong direction over and over without learning a thing from our vast and vitriolic past. We indeed need a Christmas miracle a non denominational reprieve from our collective asshole behavior towards each other. I wish for all a magical festive peaceful and loving season

Nothing overwhelms my heart more than looking at so many things in this world and thinking how it absolutely does not need to be this way. Even on the train ride home from a festive albeit rain-soaked afternoon in Port Jefferson I witnessed so much that could be helped and supported and changed. It’s getting us collectively to recognize it doesn’t have to be this way- we can have so much more and live in a more peaceful, kind world. I hope the same as you and will be pouring that hope into each story I write.

My daughter was about 5 when her step cousin told her there was no Santa. I was so angry, and no one took my side. I mean, who does that?! 🧑‍🎄 Also, we are half Jewish so we call her a pizza 🍕 🥯 bagel (her dad was Italian, unfortunately passed away when she was a baby). She’s still in marching and jazz band but in college! So proud of her ❤😊

This is my perfect dream life. I love all of it. The location the setting the details the history. You hit this one out of the park. I’ve only driven through but my Chicago born grandmother would give an occasional “you think this is windy? Growing up in Chicago the winds were strong enough to push you past the corner you were planning on turning at on a walk home”. She was definitely 30’s until 1950s Chicago, red lipstick, hat and gloves in a mink stole kinda lady. she would take down her furs and let me play in them. Even then as a very young girl my imagination brought them to life to play with me.

I love New York this time of year but during my research for this story i certainly felt the desire to visit Chicago! If only I wasn't so busy teaching this month.
