    It’s not what’s “ in the water these days “. Consider this…this new generation of 20 year olds have grown up not only skating three times a week in house league and rep teams but have spent incalculable hours playing NHL on consoles from the time they could push buttons with both thumbs. That learning tool, which really came into it’s own around 2012-2014, was never before in history available. We are now, 10 years later, seeing the results of what an extra 10,000-15,000 hours of “ practice “ can do.

    I agree video games help a whole lot for this new generation. Also the fact they grow up playing hockey of finesse and we no longer truly teach them physical hockey helps them massively. But sooner or later coaches who will want to win will be teaching old school style of hockey. Same way trends do. It will be to combat the finesse style of hockey.. so we will have sooner or later a new balance to hockey. You're right tho as a scout we can see these things. It's quite flagrant to the good scouts

    I also think we aren't seeing many players from big cities making it big time. Which 20-30 years ago was more prominent. Now the fact the kids in cities don't get has much ice time as suburbs kids as shown to be a huge difference in the game. Since city kids are known to be aggressive harder style of living that comfortable suburb kids which also translate massively on the ice.

    Imma say it since im a scout. The fact the game has evolved and theres way less hits and overall violence allows these prodigee kids to shine a lot more. Kids competing against them often give up on plays when theyre on the ice.. which back in the days their average competitor would be headhunting them.. nothing less these kids are incredible their skills with the puck is quite astonishing to say the least. But having a more open ice helps a whole lot. If the history of life repeats itself and we see a young plaer come thru with a physical play and set a trend we can find a new balance but its unlikely to be immediately. Rempe is a nice proof of it all slowly having a shift where the youth might realize hockey played physically can still bring you to the show even with lesser skill and talent. But it wont be tomorrow or anytime soon. The next generation have zero sign of being agressive they give up on a lot plays. No true second and third effort off the puck.

    1st overall picks going to the worst team in the league is a terrible rule in the NHL. Set up superstars with the worst team? There should be a new rule change: If the worst team in the league cannot turn things around in 2 full seasons, the 1st overall pick from 2 seasons ago should have trade rights and full control, and the team that drafted them cannot try and change the players mind. To have the 1st overall pick stuck on a crappy team and waste their careers is such a waste. Not all 1st overall picks have it bad, but it happens far too often with the "lottery" system the NHL has now. Thoughts?

    What i don’t understand is how the big knock on Parekh is his defense as a defenseman. I’m newer to hockey so pardon me if this is a dumb question but, with offensive talent like that, why not bump him over to Center if its such a huge concern?

    The new generation of “offensive d-man quarterbacks” is a new style of player. A player like Makar will have a far greater impact on the blue line, especially when you consider he spent his entire life developing defensive instincts

    Genetics plays a much smaller roll than people think. Players today like Matthews and McDavid it's about how they see the game, not as much genetics. Sure physical ability and athleticism plays a roll, but that's not what makes them elite. They earned that. It's the IQ.

    Sure he is a good player. Just that half of the Bedard hype videos are exaggerated. There are videos where he is just skating or giving a tackle and not really doing anything special. Yet the title of the video can be "incredible skill" or something similar - exaggeration. The same goes for the comments. People exaggerate. If the video is in line with the title and comments, I have no problem. But so often its not the case.

    I’m not hating on the kid, i’m sure he’s real good. But we need to stop embellishing everything we say. It needs to come to a stop..to describe something as impossible…when it’s clearly possible for the majority of anyone that can stand on skates and hold a stick is ridiculous. That pass he made was in a lane the size of a mack truck..it was far from impossible. But you’re not the only person who does this, its the majority of society. Just because it’s not possible for someone who’s never stepped onto a hockey rink. It’s definitely possible.

  • @RobTalksHockey

    @RobTalksHockey

    "impossible angle" pass or goal, is just a fun term that describes a crazy angle, it's not that serious. I would also strongly disagree that the majority of people who pick up a hockey stick can make these plays. Just because some of the best prospects and or players make it look easy, doesn't mean it is.
