Becoming a Player in Dungeons and Dragons

Ойын-сауық

Becoming a player in D&D only requires a few things: becoming a character hoarder, a dice goblin, and to give up 4 hours of your time each session.

@@druid_zephyrus That's why I sort of have an unspoken rule: When I start planning session, I consistently forget about your character due to you not showing up often enough, you're out of my game because that is a sign that you've probably shown up to less than 50% of the games (I tell all of my players this up front, regardless of if they're a friend or a random person). I've only ever had to boot out one player, and he was really understanding of the whole thing and took it super well. I guess it helps that he wasn't really a friend of mine (or anyone else's in the game. Long story). I've never really had an issue with players not showing up outside of this. I'm super transparent with my players, and they're super transparent with me. This goes for all three games that I currently DM.

  • @piranhaplantX

@@lucasliu7043 The opposite extreme can be an issue as well. Don't write a novel for your backstory, fill it with too many NPCs and places, and expect your DM to accept all of it. Doing that can trap the DM narratively or interfere with how he built his world. You need to set up just enough detail to make it interesting, and set up potential plot hooks for the DM to take advantage of later. Don't set too much of your character in stone, and definitely don't try to abuse it to try justifying higher stats or fancy items. But aside from that, I'll just say that I'd rather no backstory than too much. But if you don't put a backstory in my game, I'll probably have a talk with you to let you know I'll find a way to fill it in when you act out your character enough.

I mean, to a point. But none of that really sinks in, until you use these abilities in practice. Especially with specific DM's when it inevitably comes to one of the many things left open for interpretation. My most recent one probably has to be with the Artificer. There was a lot in that class that was left open, or worded on such a way that it could be abused. Like the ability to bag bomb at level two, if you take the RAW interpretation.

So I’m DMing a campaign and we are all pretty new to the game (I know the mechanics quite well) Things that happened: Our aarakocra ‘seduced’ a random gnome in front of their in game child Our elf did so good at armwrestling (Nat20vNat1) they ripped an arm off Our changeling walked into a bar, stabbed the barkeeper, and panicked when he started dying

aside from the joke of "why didn't you stop making characters?" it's actually good practice for two reasons 1. you won't get as attached and be very sad when they inevitably *DIE* 2. when they do die, you can use another one you made! constantly moving on and never mourning your beloved characters can't be harmful at all!
