It's an amazing field. But for those interested FYI, if you don' t like working with children is going to be a really hard job to do; I see the struggle some professionals go thru everyday in my office. Again, it is not worth it if you don't like kids, and is not fear to them either, in fact you will do more damage than good. Many RBTs and BCBAs burnout just because they do not have the nurturing drive the job requires. On the other hand, there is a huge shortage of male professionals in this field and they are truly needed. Two last things, salaries are pretty good and there is no unemployment in this field.

Hi Tram, thank you for watching and leaving a comment. You could do both if you'd like. There are some school psych programs that have behavior analysis coursework integrated into the program. However, school psychologists can provide behavior analytic services such as doing functional behavioral assessments and putting together behavior intervention plans. My supervisor is both and so she does school related work and community based work. If you do a school psychology program, then you may only need to do a verified course sequence and additional hours for the BCBA. Hope that was helpful. Please let me know what other questions you may have.

In the State of California the mode Salary listed for new BCBA is $70-80k, with some listings for BCBA Clinical Director at the mode Salary range of $90k-105K. The 61K figure is likely grouping what are BCaBA (those with a bachelor with aba coursework, & thousand of clinical hours) in with those that are BCBA with Master Degrees.

RBT is great practical training to learn strategies used to work one on one with individuals. Sometimes you can get certified as a Behavior Assistant to the BCBA which does almost all that an RBT does. I would say consider becominga mental health tech too. If you do the certified nursing assistant which takes a few weeks, you can be hired as a Mental Health Technician and get similar pay. RBT training is a lot to learn with terminology, learning the client, and putting strategies into practice, but you will work more with younger population in the evenings. The Mental Health Tech position would likely be in a clinical setting with a variety of trained health staff with shift hours, working with a wide range of population and more individuals during the day. MHT positions are PT or FT employment whereas RBT will require you to build up your work load. Another option would be to work as a substitute paraeducator in the schools to learn different ways specialists work with the same kinds of population/cases.

Many psychology programs will accept social work students because the field of social work has a lot of psychology ingrained in the field. If you get a MS in Social Work, and want the expertise in ABA, get the Ph.D. in BCBA (BCBA-D). You can set up your own clinic. Or go for PhD. in child psychology and work with an ABA specialist to offer services for your target population/community.

Hi Emmanuel. Thank you for watching and commenting. It is much appreciated. The new 2022 rules will likely allow you to take a certificate program. The current rules are accepting applicants that have degrees related to ABA but, now they are expanding that for individuals that want to get into ABA with a related degree. I would call or email them first to ask but, I think that you would be fine getting into a certificate program which is about 21 hours. It has coursework and practicum. As long as it is an approved course sequence. 😎. Also about scholarships...depending on what program you choose, there may be some assistantships or scholarships for that program. I do some research and it helps. Please let me know what other questions you may have.

@@Joelschoolpsy Explain to me the underlying neurology of the autistic brain, tell me a minimum of 10 neurological differences and how those differences effect an autistic person's behaviour. Any educated person knows ABA is plain harmful and it does not speak well for the BACB that the autistic community's response is dismissed. ABA does not introduce the controversial issues with ABA therapists. Recently The American Psychological Association caught ABA performing Bias Publications leaving out all the studies that do not support ABA as effective. Human psychology has proven that reward systems backfire and destroy intrinsic motivation. ABA creates conditional love, the children only receive any sign of love and affection if they do what they are told. Science exposes that as extremely harmful to child development, just because ABA does not intend to neglect the child does not mean the children do not feel neglected, it is disgraceful ABA does not think about the experience of the person on the receiving end and only cares about the behaviour. In your video here, all we heard from you is "behaviour", the more times the term behaviour is mentioned in any source the more inadequate we know that source will be. As soon as we keep hearing behaviour we know it is all about Skinnarian manipulation, the more you analyse behaviour, the more we know you are ignoring the children's health and the children themselves. Human psychology, science, and real life experiences show ABA is ineffective and harmful in the long run. Statistics all around the world show approximately 80% of autistic adults are unemployed, and the majority of autistic children go through ABA showing ABA did not succeed in helping them become independent, employed adults. University studies show that anyone who goes through ABA is 86% more likely to develop PTSD symptoms or even PTSD itself. The reason scientists and psychologists felt the need to make anti-aba methodology like the Floortime Model and TEACH, is because scientific discoveries have exposed ABA as physically harmful internally. ABA is harmful when it is done correctly, the odd few who compliment it had therapists willing to disobey the BCBAs and follow their own intuition concerning what's good for the child. Numerous former ABA workers complained about what the BCBAs instructed them to do because anyone who cares about children know that is not good for the children, the BCBAs continued with their harmful behavioural plans that the workers resigned and are now saying working for ABA is the most shameful thing they've ever done. If you want to be introduced to the actual controversial issues about ABA look up and watch "Why Positive Reinforcement Isn't So Positive: Troubling Questions About Behaviourism".

Depending on what school you go to, they may have and SLP and ABA program. You could also see if you could do a ABA certificate program to supplement your SLP masters degree. There is also the possibility that you could do an online ABA program while your doing an SLP masters. Right now...it will take about 5-6 years to get your full LPC since programs are about 3 years and and another 2-3 years will be dedicated getting all the hours you need to become fully licensed. Lpcs dont tend to make much however, if you enjoy counseling...it definitely is a great field. I will say jobs are competitive for LPC. With BCBA it can take maybe 2-3 years...depending on whether you already have a masters and you just need to get into a certificate program or not. BCBAs do tend to get paid more and the opportunities for jobs may be a little higher. However, BCBAs do not counsel as much. They really observe behavior, consult, interview...and conduct and put together behavior intervention plans. They are both good fields...but if you are wanting to do more counseling LPC may be a good choice and if you want to observe behavior and design intervention plans BCBA may be a good choice.

Hi Annastasia. Thank you for watching and your questions. Behavior analysis is different from social work because it really focuses on behavior whereas social work involves counseling/therapy, linking individuals to resources, etc. Behavior analysts dont really counsel. They really try to create strategies to disrupt the frequency of a behavior and replace certain behaviors with new behaviors. They do this through observation, interviews, consultations, creating behavior intervention plans, functional behavior assessments, etc. Behavior analysts typically work with children however there are some corporate behavior analysts as well. Many start their own companies. I dont know how much BCBAs work with veterans. I dont think it is often. Definitely social workers and counselors work with vets. @@AStarryEyedLife Thank you for sharing Annastasia. I actually think that going the social work route and then becoming a LP is great. The field of social work is really respected by the field of psychology. Many psychology programs accept individuals with social work backgrounds. Alot of psychology goes into social work. I think it's a great way to become a licensed psychologist. You'll definitely have some really great experience. Thank you for watching and your comments. Also please let me know if you have any more questions. I'm always happy to help.

Can BCBA be used outside the education field? I work in substance abuse and counseling, but I would like to use these techniques to change the problematic behaviors of people suffering from addiction, anxiety, depression, and phobias.

Hi Latonya. I definitely think that you can use these techniques for that. I know that there are some channels that go deeper into what you can do with your BCBA. I will also be exploring more things that you can do in ABA. I think there are so many different things that behavior analysts can do. I think the best bet is to apply to companies that work with populations outside of education. I think that the BACB website may also have more information on this as well. Please let me know what other questions you may have. Thank you for watching. 😎

Hi 901world. Thank you for watching. Also, BCBAs typically work in companies and various clinics as well. I have seen videos of BCBAs that work In childcare clinics. I do wonder if any work in hospitals. On the ABAI website they have a list of jobs around the US and abroad. That could be a good place to see if any jobs in hospitals are available. It really is a good resource that I use. Please let me know what other questions you may have.

Hi Nicolee. The first step is to obtain a masters degree in the field of education, psychology, behavior analysis or something similar, take the coursework and internship hours necessary and then you'll take an exam. Have you already obtained a masters degree? If so, you may be able to get into a certificate program that will allow you to obtain the necessary hours and coursework.
