1. You have got to be able to lock into the beat. This course will give you a number of ways and beats to practice reading dialing in your rhythm pocket.
2. You need to know what your options are as far as being able to spice up a typical chord progression so that you can take something like a simple G C D chord progression and make it sound unique. Learning ways to make the mundane sound like magic!
3. Dynamics play a huge roll in having the emotional side of what you are playing come through to the listener so we will spend a lot of time showing you how to dial in to the feel of what you are playing.
All of this and more is covered in great detail in Foundations Of Rhythm Classic Rock Edition the new rhythm guitar course available at brettpapa.com (link above). I learned from a man named Ron Thompson. Ron played for John Lee Hooker, he's on Chris Isaack albums and had a band with Mick Fleetwood. He was a player's player and he taught me the better your rhythm the better your leads, the better your singing and the better your stage presence. Everything improves when you play a solid rhythm because you have control over your phrasing. It really is amazing how much everything falls into place once you get a solid groove.

Back in 1971 when I first started playing it was driven into my head the importance of rhythm guitar. Only the most dedicated pay attention to that wisdom. And boy, it's so much fun! Nothing like locking into a groove and getting goosebumps! 😃😎🤓 Great episode.

Rhythm all day. I’m a blues guy but I can’t stand slow blues where a guitar solo is played for the entirety of the song and the rhythm instruments are turned way down. Chicago blues peaked in the 50s when the rhythms were rockin’

Brett, one of the many things I love about you is that you do not take yourself too seriously, but you're seriously great. And you are lighthearted and fun. This is a super valuable lesson. If we play guitar for someone (1 person or 1000), it's not burning lead chops that will make them tap their foot or dance, but laying down a tight infectious rhythm groove (especially great tone, like you are getting here). Many guitarists do not realize this or how fun playing rhythm can be.

Brett, your rhythm instruction greatly changed my guitar playing literally overnight. I watched this last night and now I am a much better guitar player today, thanks to you. I was bound by practicing the same songs/sounds over and over with no awareness of how to create music creatively and independently. But, overnight after watching this instruction you have given me the tools (I didn't even know I needed) to transform my guitar playing experience.

Dude! This is exactly how I want to play. I’ m nearly 60 years old and I just started learning on New Year’s Day, so I have miles to go, but this right here is why I want to play the guitar. Lead is great, but it’s rhythm guitar that calls to me. You’ve just got yourself a new subscriber in the UK. ❤👍🏾

@@rashadmoss3991D-shaped major and minor are more or less in the fingers, now so I just need to keep practising them. The A-shaped major's going to take a long time, so I've literally just added the C-shape to make sure I don't get bored and burned out. Rhythm's actually not a problem. I think I spend more time practising strumming by itself than anything else. I go one string from lowest to highest, two strings the other way, then three strings back up again, starting with up strokes then adding the down strokes for full 16th notes. (I hope that makes sense.) I'm using Fender Play as a metronome because it has some awesome drum beats in it. If the beat is standard rock, then I'm changing chords on the beat. If there's even a hint of syncopation, I'll start strumming on the off beats. It's hilarious. The tempo's nothing to write home about - just 90bpm, but I'm having a great time.

I need you to know that the energy, encouragement, and practical reasoning in this video has exponentially changed the course of my learning process. I am a young singer/composer, who is hopelessly in love with becoming a guitarist to gain experience in live performances. But I've never thought of focusing on playing rhythm nor have I known HOW to learn. Your use of a single progression to teach so many different techniques was brilliant, because now I'm grooving AND learning. Thank you.

I really loved this video. Thank you Brett. It inspired me to buy your rhythm course - paid already. When I was a teenager learning guitar, I was only interested in lead guitar. I had a hiatus for decades and picked up a guitar 15 Years ago and from that point, I have had a fascination with rhythm guitar. Solid rhythm guitar that sits right in the pocket is just so satisfying. I recently enjoyed the Robert Baker course on rock riffs, which was rhythm riffing inspired and not about lead guitar. I typically practice by putting a drum loop on from EZDrummer and play with ideas (mostly rhythm)… I often record my sessions and listen to them later. Some I develop into songs. This why your suggestion in this video struck a chord with me. Thank you. You have a great tone with your Nash tele and amps!

Buying an electric guitar in less than two weeks for my 60th birthday. Total beginner and I'm super excited to get going. Playing (and learning) over a drum track looks like fun and what your pitch for the Foundations course made a ton of sense. Rythym excites me way more than lead.

Dude..I can't believe you made this video. About month ago I realized I sucked at rhythm guitar. I've been practicing my solos for a few years and totally neglected my rhythm. It's a blast playing rythm!!

I like to think of rhythm vs lead as the saying you hear in golf: drive for show, putt for dough. Musicians and bands will always want a solid rhythm player over a flashy lead player any day of the weak. Not to mention, improving rhythm will naturally improve lead lines and playing as well. Awesome lesson, thanks!

Hey Stash, been a while since i’ve seen any of your vids. Only got as far as 1:31 and have decided to watch the rest later once my guitar is to hand. I’ve been a bedroom rocker for about 20 years but focused mainly on lead parts apart from when learning ACDC tunes…for obvious reasons😁 Recently i’ve been going back to basics and trying to focus on more rhythm style playing which is already having a huge impact on my playing and especially “unlocking” more of the neck for both rhythm and lead playing 🤘🎸

Yes, i would agree with these comments. Brett, i love your easy laugh, your lightgearted approach. You make learning easy. And, you're such an awesome player: hot licks, and solid, solid rhythm. 😎 Also, thanks for always having such talented musicians on your show, they are great, and i always learn great stuff from them! It's also great how you ALWAYS humble yourself to whomever is your guest, and take a back seat to them. That's a good lesson for all the kids out there to learn! Keep up the excellent work! (I'm sure it didn't even seem like "work.") You help to make the YT platform legit, dude. 👍 👌 😎
