We used lots and lots of paint stripper, after using paint stripper you must nutralize metal what ever it is in water if you dont it will keep on rusting vinigar will add to rusting process

I'm thinking it will rust immediately without some kind of coating. How are you going to make sure it does not rust?

Yes, good point! The last step is to dip it in vinegar for 20 or so minutes, which will give it a patina to prevent rusting.
