Yeah back in the days before the year 2000 it was left side is straight and right side is gay for guys with one ear pierced. You never really saw men both ears pierced until the late 90s or so.

George Michael had both his ears pierced in the 80's I'm sure he wasn't the only celebrity there was this whole movement in the 80's called New Romantics so lots of men had both ears pierced probably in the late 70's as well

No, it wasn't made up, it was a thing when I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I remember every trip to NY, I'd spot a right ear only guy and back then, well, easy to tell.

You guys must be in your 20's if you don't know that putting a ring only on the right ear meant you were gay. All throughout the 90's and into the 2000's that was well known. I got my first one in my left ear in the late 90's and then got the other ear pierced (a ring in both ears was fine). I'm 43 btw.
