No wonder not many beavers are left now . don't like this wanker.
Man I always liked leather work. My grandfather used to work at a leather company making all kind of stuff. He worked in Yoakum Texas. Take care stay safe and God bless.
The fat on a beaver tail is really tough. I don't think it is fat, so much as gristle. I shave off what I can with a sharp knife. Instead of salting them, throw them in a 5 gallon bucket with lime water. The lime will loosen the scales in about a week or two. They have to come off. Once you scrape off the shales the tail will be snow white and ready for your tanning chemicals. The finished tail should be brown, sort of soft, and super tough! Yours turned out nice. Your friend has a great shop. I have been doing leatherwork and building saddles for about the same amount of time, but I sure don't have the tools he has. The clicker machine (cookie cutter press) alone would save a huge amount of time!
He is a true artisan at work. He has managed to keep a part of American ingenuity alive. This man is a dying breed. I am really impressed. I would love t5o see other works that he has created. You are blessed to be able to know folks like him who can show you a dying art form. I would appreciate this more than any store-bought item made by factories. Thanks for sharing.
I bet that shop smells amazing!

That was so cool watching him make that and all the steps n lil gadgets, not many craftsman of any kind left these days, which is such a loss to our history and how it all started... technically is taking over it all... thx for sharing that with us..
Nothing goes together like beavers and dollars! 😂 But seriously, thats is awesome work that man did and made it look easy!
After fleshing, you need to place the tail in a wood ash bath and soak. What you want to do is remove the black scale, and tan up just the leather. Once the scalecan be removed then place in the tanning agents, once tanned you will dye the leather black to make the wallets.
Thank you Mullet Man and all your friends. You gave me a way to get my daughter interested in hunting and fishing. She says you look like you have so much fun. She's young still but interest is all I need.
I just started making leather wallets at home! Buddy and I decided to learn it with all this crazy shit happening. Might ask well learn something while staying at home. I am definitely going to be making a couple of these Beaver tail wallets!
This shop is right next to me! Good to see people giving it some love.
Mullet Man, you show us the coolest stuff!
After you flesh it and salt it try using Dixon hide tanning solution, you order it online and it works well. It's all I've used for tanning hides since I was 19 and became interested in trapping
Just had some leather work done. Neat to see the process’s. It’s pretty addictive to have quality leather products.
Love your vids man, look forward to every post!
I had to leave a like when I heard he was a Tarleton Texan! I graduated from there just about a year ago. Cool video Mike!
I have always admired excellent leather work. Besides that, the leather smells amazing. Thank you for sharing!

What leather shop did he work at?! I grew up in and around Stephenville!
Do the sell the harnesses there? I had them make me a protective cuff when I was Animal Control.
He's like "is this machine for leather?" *while in a leather workshop

Hey bud use 20 mule borax in laundry area at Walmart great for skinning and preserve

I been doing it for awhile. You can do everything by hand and don't need all the fancy equipment he's using. In fact hand stitched or saddle stitched lasts much longer. Amazon has beginner's kits. I make holsters, wallets, belts, zippo cases, etc. Watch corter leather videos to learn your basics then move on to tooling. You can buy patterns from corter among tiger places till you learn. It's a blast, creating something only a handful can make.
Beaver skin boots next
I've always wanted to do that with a beaver tail wen I trap them
I live in Stephenville where he went to college which leather shop did he work for?
If you tan that beaver in berch bark instead of salt it will come out plyable and last much longer.
I thought you meant the other kind of beaver hunting, still a great video

AWESOME🌟✨🌟✨
As a leather worker I can really appreciate the quality work that went into that project. Time to dump a few beavers. BTW, did the tail soften any at all or was it more like raw hide?

They stay pretty stiff using salt. Maybe if you apply a lot of neatsfoot or mink but I'd tan it with some berch bark. Turn it into veg tan.
That’s badass
k. that wallet is awesome.
I can never tell does he have a small chew in? Some times it looks like he's dipping.
I have this same exact wallet just not bever wife got it for me for father's day from uptmore.
Theres a tanning salt u can order that is better
I like that wallet a lot
Damn that guy is good I want a wallet like that one.
Awesome
