Beaver fun facts and Tulip Q&A

Комедия

THANK YOU Neil for the incredible donation!
Today’s video goes over some fun beaver biology and some Q&A about Tulip.
The one question I have gotten that I didn’t answer in the video is do beavers have a smell. In general the answer is no. Beavers don’t have a smell. It’s in their best interest for avoiding predators to not put off a smell. However they do scent mark territory and that substance is potent and smelly. Scent marking takes place just outside of the water on a small mound they create from mud. It tells other beavers who lives there but does a predator no good.
The other question I’ve gotten is regarding where do they go to the bathroom? Beavers usually pass waste in the water. This works well as it disperses without attracting a predator and it’s a great fertilizer for wetlands.
Anyone wanting to support our efforts can do so at the following links. Thank you!!

Holley, this video is so educational. You explain what a beaver is supposed to be like and how Tulip’s early struggles may keep her from reaching her full size - and she has those patches on her back left from that awful infection - but she’s so happy in the house socializing with her human, cat, and dog family! What fantastic fur, and a beautiful tail! I wish i could hear the call she makes when she greets you!

Holley, from what I learned as a nearsighted person, beavers are nearsighted on land, but in water vision is bent naturally so everything is normal. I was entirely amazed and relieved when I entered water and could see just how everyone without glasses sees. Pure liberation.

HOLLY, I love you what your doing with Tulip, beavers are very unique animals. Just think they almost went extinct with the fur trade from their warm pelts used for hats and such. Question, are you going to keep Tulip or will she be returned out to the wild?

I think she has said it's a wait and see. If Tulip is able to be released when the time comes, then that is ideal, but if she can't, she can become an ambassador animal. My hope is that whatever is best for Tulip is what will happen, and am glad she has the help of Holley, Woodside Wildlife, and her vets to make that determination when the time comes.

What amazes me is most ppl can't touch their domestic pets in certain area's on their body...this angel like tulip let's Holly touch her anywhere for this educational video. I've found this to be the case with wild birds as well. When I'd rescue fledglings or even adult birds they never have tried biting...but our domestic birds sure did. Wildlife is amazing. U help them and I truly believe they know after awhile you did help them and the trust sets in. Sometimes it's even hard to make them leave. For those times a soft release is crucial. I applaud Holly for everything she does for tbese glorious furry ppl. There is a very special place by Saint Francis in heaven for u!

Thank you Holley for doing all you have for these precious little beavers. Question, So we see Tulip do her awesome Air Grooming, and its the cutest thing I have ever seen. Grooming is an instinct beavers have, correct? From what I have seen they start to groom at a very young age, and they also will learn some grooming skills from their parents and siblings. Holley, do you think that the Air Grooming she has been doing is instictual? It seems as tho she doesnt know that she is smacking her lips and tongue. I dont know why, but I find this to be just fascinating!! What are your thoughts???

Great question. Beaver families groom each other and the orphans start grooming us and each other very early in their life. Tulip is very different from the others but it happened after the skin infection. I believe that with time and practice she will get better. ❤️‍🩹 I’m watching her closely and although I don’t want her to have to take more medication, she may need some nerve relief at some point. She will sit in my lap and let me rub her back for hours it seems.

You have a wonderfully resurgent beaver population in Germany. Germany has led the way in Europe with protecting them and making it illegal to hunt beavers. Here in the UK beavers were extinct for 400 years. But in the last 20 years they have been reintroduced into our wilds. Some of those new beavers came from Germany and Poland. There is a difference between the North American Beaver (Castor Canadensis) and the Eurasian Beaver (Castor Fiber). The two kinds of beaver look almost identical but their chromosomes are different so NA Beavers and Eurasion Beavers cannot interbreed. Here in the UK we owe Germany and Poland a huge "thank you" for letting us have some of your precious Beavers so that we can repopulate out wetlands.

If you have a sense of smell then you have a sense of taste it is the same part of the brain that is responsible for it. For example cinnamon actually has no other taste than bitter it is our sense of smell that causes the illusion of taste. Most complex tastes are actually aroma.
