They're not as small as you might think. 2 yr olds are 30lbs minimum but the adults regularly reach 80-90, and some 100lbs.

A local beaver dam to me has been going through this with breaches. The Town installed a pipe on the bottom of the dam bed after it broke, knowing the beavers would be right at it the next night. So far, it's been years since the last break and the beavers seem happy too.

Once upon a time I lived in a small town, Northern Ontario. The beavers moved in, made a beautiful lake I must say on my property over 3-4 months, the town moved in with JCB's for a week straight, broke the dam. Next day it was back up.

It keeps the beavers employed.

Hopefully those dam beavers have improved their dam engineering.

There was a story about 15 years ago about the EPA fining and threatening a land owner for building an illegal pond. He didn't build a pond, Beavers did. The EPA harassed him for a while and eventually accepted that it was natural and there was nothing they could do about it. So if you want to have a pond on your property and the Man wont let you, get some beavers on your property.

Dam: *falls* Beavers: Looks like Dam’s back on the menu boys!

@@dorarararara3001 We have been going through massive floods in Australia, we are in fact still going through them. Not one of them has been caused by beavers... because we don't have them, and I wish we did.

The Real hardship is the permit process! Think of the hours of hassle with the County the Beavers have to go through just to get a permit and Then the picky inspections by every wannabe County engineer! Hard to imagine there are Any Beavers left! (lol)

I don't know if you guys ever tried opening a dam but I did and they are tough. I was lucky to open a 1 ft area after a lot of effort. Those beavers are great engineers.

a side story, Canada gave a few Beavers to the Govt of Chile as a gift when the PM was there several yrs ago. They put them on an island in their larger archipelago where they went about doing beaver things deforesting the place. They had a major problem on their hands to catch them reforest the island . The only way they could catch them was to put in audio speakers with the sound of rushing water with traps near by to get the critters (they don't like the sound of rushing water) caged and send home to Canada true story

Wonder how long that cycle has been going on?? Decades??? Centuries??? Generations of beavers going "yes I remember hearing takes of great great great grampa having the dam 10 feet high and triple ponds.. ahh the good old days"..

The music is a bit over the top. But I guess this damn was, too! I've seen people destroy Beaver dams, and it always makes me very sad. But I'm super happy to see a natural cycle of dam collapse and recovery; it's clearly the correct order of things, and the way dams grow and then drain is very very good for the environment. Now I REALLY wish we had Beavers in New Zealand.

Have no idea how I got here but that´s quite impressive tbh. Bravo beavers, the natures true engineers.

As a property owner in Northern Minnesota my land is crossed by several natural drainage areas. The amount of water varies from year to year depending on rainfall and seasons. And while I like Beavers they plug culverts, undermine trails and drop trees in there Dam building. Every couple years the young head out to create a new home territory and it's surprising how fast they get a dam started. In natural areas it's interesting to see, on private land it can be quite destructive. Minnesota has a population of beavers that rivals historic numbers.

It’s the weird disconnect that people have too, between wanting food to eat..... or letting nature take it’s course. Everything around farmland is compromise, and some people just don’t get it. Certainly, over millennia beaver has shaped Minnesota. Now, they have to adapt to a life of balance 🦫

i wouldnt not be surprised at all if it returned to the same size as it was a year an a half prior in time, they probably just keep adding to it untill it gets too big?

very cool i remember watching the first collapse when it happened.

I have 2 ponds on my property that are fed by a small swamp . Now a beaver moves in and wants the swamp higher which I think is a great idea . It's going to look nice and he will have a beautiful home . Problem is my one pond isn't filled now... Stopped the water completely . Not sure what to do as I can't have muskrats moving into that pond because of a 20 foot embankment ... There has to be a equal balance of some kind....

They're not pests. More and more we'll get to realize just how important they are when there'll be droughts, floods, low level of water in aquifers... the only problem I see is over population. Numbers should be managed especially if they have no natural predators nearby (like wolves).

@@Vesny86 they are most definitely pest and most definitely brilliant. It just depends where they set up shop. If a dam suddenly gets built and floods homes and property they are pest if it floods open ground then it is often a good thing.

I used to work in an animal sanctuary and they had an old time resident beaver named Brook. (apt name eh?) and since she was old , they brought her inside into the basement where she had a nice warm and spacious pen to live out the rough winter. They'd bring her aspen boughs every morning to eat and gnaw on. I was down there doing some repairs one moring (and she was very eager to tel me continuously how I was doing it wrong and how she could do it better! lol) and I saw her trying to get a 5' long bough through a 30" opening. I said "haha, smarty, let's see you solve tha....oh shit. She promptly turned it sideways and dragged it through lengthwise instead of widthwise. Beavers aren't stupid, not by a LONG shot.... Now a naturalist could probably explain it better, but I bet the periodic failing of the damn is part of a bigger scheme to let the nutrients etc that have built up in the pond out into the lower lakes etc. It's probably been going on for 100's of years and good on you to not mess with it. The only time nature runs into trouble is when mankind sticks his or her nose in. Like the lake from the movie Dirty Dancing. It drains every 15 years or so and they've called in the Army Corps of Engineers to figure out why and to stop it. I say "GTFO" and leave it alone. It's a natural occurance and you don't mess with it just because some people built cottages around it......

Had big beaver dam, beaver trying to make big 2nd pond, we lefr 1st pond alone and take dam down, few days later I wss up the tree watching, beaver DONT GIVE UP! So we deciced leave it alone, now it become 1 big pond and beaver haven't make any new one, it more pretty out here, more rooms for my kids/ family to come down and fishing for sunfish, small bass etc, I seen beaver swim around, they are harmless, they build it for reason.

Destroy is a harsh way to put it, the good that comes to the environment far out ways the trees that are lost to the beaver and there dams. That is why America is introducing the beaver back into it natural habitat . Also the fresh water that is saved and the natural flood control that is a result of the beavers actions is vital to the fresh water resources.

Due to the height of the dam it is hard for fish to get into the pond. We have tried fishing some with no success.

(1:52 sec) I don't call that devastation.......that's next moose season land of opportunity ! The fresh new juicy vegetation will flourish and it will attract the big guys (moose). What amazes me is how the mighty beaver and all his family will rebuild their domain in so short a time ! Years ago way back in time, a similar event happened at our hunting cabin and our small lake disappeared to a trickle. We had a 40 foot long dock that was left high and dry but in our case it took well over two years for the land owners to reclaim the pond ! In the third year the lake was back to about half of the dock. Can't have a better life than spending time with them tree chucks....Great video, and well presented ! Thanks.

After that dam collapsed it left a clean stream bed free of most of the silt. How much in depth long term study has been done on beavers in the wild? Perhaps, the occasional dam collapse is by design?

I was thinking something similar. Each time the dam collapses, the loose silt at the bottom of the lake is carried downstream, making the lake deeper.

More then that. They found that the water quality ph level is brought back to normal. As even the Texas Corp of Engineers drain the Dams every 10 years. To lower levels. To support the fish and wildlife. They also inspect the Dams lower basin..

Simple. They keep plugging the leaks until the water levels rise beyond the structural limits of a wooden dam, or exceptional weather event breaks the game. Depending on the local conditions, the cycle duration can be very different. They can't stand the sound of water running free. Their instinct is just to plug, plug, plug, plug ... and plug.

No what you saw was the silt build up. Eventually the basin will completely silt up so the reservoir will not have enough depth and the beavers will move on. Then the pond will become wet land and eventually a forest glade. Remember the land was as deep as the down stream side. It looks like the impoundment silt level behind the dam has risen about 6 feet. Normally they move down stream and start over. If you followed the up stream side you will find a series of wetlands and glades as they move.

Was this filmed with drone footage? That’s pretty cool!

Nice update. TOo bad it has regular collapses though, just when the fishing gets good.
