Beauty Lighting: On Any Budget

Фильм және анимация

Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize!
Creating a beautiful image is not only useful for narrative filmmaking, it’s also a fundamental for commercial work too. When lighting for beauty, one has to consider the location and lighting limitations on set, all the while focusing on creating an image that’s picture-perfect. Any small amount of shadow could be enough to ruin a beauty shot. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we discuss the different ways of setting up soft and appealing lighting for the most fabulous commercial cinematography.
In this video, Vee from the A-Team walks us through 3 different lighting setups for beauty commercials. Our first setup takes place indoors and utilizes a classic white background, showcasing our talent and makeup product. Next, we head outside and dominate the sun by using a giant sheet of diffusion above our talent. And lastly, we’re back indoors to capture a gorgeous close up on both the talent and the makeup product used.
The main techniques we used in this video are to minimize shadows on the face as much as possible without flattening the face, know your location’s limitations, and consider the model’s skin tone. To minimize shadows means to add light to your subject. These lights can be added from a variety of different angles to avoid any shadows casted from the talent’s nose, chin, or even hair. Knowing your location's limitations means to location scout. For outdoor setups, it’s important to know where the sun is coming from, if there’s power sources nearby, and to make sure the weather won’t cause any problems. For indoor setups, know what your lighting situation will look like whether you can use studio lights or if you need to bring your own. Lastly, considering your model’s skin tones means to simply light for different hues and brightnesses of skin. Each human being’s skin tone ranges from darker to pale tones which will affect how light hits and reflects off of them.
Beauty commercial lighting is an art form like any other lighting style. To perfect the visual look of beauty lighting, keep shadows off your talent by adding light, scout your location for any lighting and production issues so you can plan accordingly, and consider the model’s skin tones to represent their beauty the best. These lighting techniques can also be applied to other forms of visual story or commercial filmmaking.

I'd like to see an episode not so much about lighting techniques, but just running through electrical rules on set. So how many lights can you use of one wall outlet, who is in charge of electrical distribution etc. I think that would be really great as I have really struggled to find any information on stuff like that :)

I think it would be interesting if you did a 'style of' series where you take films, TV shows, music videos, adverts etc. that have an iconic 'look' in terms of their lighting and you show us how we could achieve a similar style on different budgets. I don't know if that makes any sense but I think it would be really cool...

This one is REALLY valuable. The detailed showcase of both low budget and high budget makes the video helpful for such a wide range of people, and the lighting setups themselves are really well thought out. You can definitely see here why high budget is worth doing if said budget exists, but the low budget setups are very smart, and they really exemplify how far you can go if you're starting out with minimal equipment. It's not hard to get a DSLR, a 5-in-1 reflector, and some some LED panels, but poor usage makes for poor results. I've been there. This video also ends up being educational about higher budget production for those who can't dabble in it yet. Understanding what you're chasing is crucial for those attempting to creatively achieve great results with minimal equipment.

Nice tutorial as always, and useful not just for commercial beauty but for narrative etc. However - you forgot to point out (or lost in the edit) the black foil sunshade on the camera during the low-budget outdoor section. It appears briefly in one shot "my trusty t3i", then is labeled in the recap when it kills the massive glare across the lens, but is never actually discussed.

Some of us have access to a little more gear than the budget setup, but not as much as the high-end setup. I'd love to see maybe on one episode where you take the higher-end scenario and do a sort of "...if you don't have another 300D and soft box, you could probably get by with throwing a smaller MC-like light off to the side--and here's what that would look like..." Thanks again for your episodes! Love the 4-Minute Film School!

Indy Mogul already did a similar piece on this, but lighting rigs are always fascinating. Since you work with a lot of DPs and bring them on to the show, it'd be great to have some insights into crazy or inventive lighting rigs, how they were accomplished, and the final look they achieved. I'm a big fan of creative grip work and it'd be cool to see some more of that in the universe.

As a frequent outdoor traveller, outdoor shooting has always been my 'cliche' reason of not venturing on lighting much and depends on natural light. But as time goes by, this makes me even lazier to shoot outdoor with big set ups. Since Aputure came out with portable lighting series, I've been seeing my production friends shooting with 'em, and therefore got myself a pair of the Aputure MC itself. It would be best if your team came out with a simple episode of using the portable lighting such as the MX, M9 and MC series being the latest ones in different time of the days. I mean, rather than seeing other KZreadrs doing it, would be best to see it from the brand channel itself eyh? 😊 Anyway, I learned quite much from y'all and another one of the Aputure MC in my set up would be nice 🤭

That's a good point! Sometimes a lot of ambient bounce can add a nice realism to a shot

Can the Aputure MC(s) be used as beauty lights for indoor studio / outdoor vlogging? can they emulated warm skin tones despite being RGB? Looking for a set of small, quality RGB lights that can meet all requirements.

I'd like to see an episode not so much about lighting techniques, but just running through electrical rules on set. So how many lights can you use of one wall outlet, who is in charge of electrical distribution etc. I think that would be really great as I have really struggled to find any information on stuff like that :)

Nice tutorial... Would like to see a interior film look using budget vs expensive lighting... Example: creating a scene or shot from joker(kind of)movie using budget and expensive lighting..

I'm curious on several good use cases for gobos with the spotlight mount. Simulation of Light through a venetian blind or open window of course, but what else could it do?

If you only have one light in front, right over the camera is a pretty standard and good light for beauty. No need for 2 if you don’t have 2 but full board is a good idea.

Great Tutorial! Can you do one about avoiding glare coming from the person skin? some people have very reflective skin and shooting this kind of video, especially with the close up, will look weird.

I'd love to see a case study where the model walks or run on set. In other words, when we have to move the camera to follow the model and watch out for lights to not be seen in the frame while they constantly light the model properly.
