Beautifull Black Walnut Wood Turning Fantastic Grain

Nice piece of Black Walnut becomes a live edge beauty.
The grain is simply beautiful with a bit of chatoyance to boot.

Such a beautiful piece of Walnut, Gary! Absolutely gorgeous! Your expert turning didn't do it any harm, either but brought out all the grain and color it has! Most excellent finish, this is just a prime example of what can be done with a piece of Black Walnut when you put it in the hands of a craftsman. Well done, my friend, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil

Thanks so much Phil. Coming from the King of live edge filled with bark I appreciate that. The pieces from the limb I got all seem to have beautiful grain. I did get a decent shape on it to help show it off. Sadly I heard that that tree may have to come down because of a tree decease. My nepehw told me that at the family reunion we went to last week. I think they got some good offers for the main part of the tree and there may be some more limbs for me. The limbs are huge. Thanks for watching buddy! Gary

Thanks Joe! Funny how that works out. I finished this piece 2 weeks ago. I had to get a little ahead as we went to a family reunion and I did not want to rush something when we got back. Makes me think I should get a little bench top lathe to take along LOL But I did grab a chunk from the firewood pit to bring home. In rough shape and hoping I can get something out of it. You will know when I do because it will make a good story. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Mark. Yes very interesting. It has happened a few times but it certainly is a coincidence. I had this one loaded a few weeks ago and set to run yesterday. When I watched Phil's video I thought how did this happen LOL. But chances are there will be a live edge coming from Phil but not always with this shape. Now we have to see Phil turn a segmented turning the same week I do...not too likely but that would be cool. Thanks for watching, Gary

Beautiful turning! I love black walnut. Question: Was the wood dry before you turned it? What sort of moisture content do you like before turning a natural edge piece? Thanks!
@ThePapa1947
11 күн бұрын
Thank you Israel! Yes I consider it dry. I think it was about 9%. I have turned natural edge that were at 12% with no issues. So much depends on when the tree was cut. If it is cut in the dorment season it stands a good chance of the bark staying on. Thanks gor watching, Gary

Thank you for all the excellent videos you post. Question: what moisture content do you shoot for before you turn a piece of wood like this?
@ThePapa1947
12 күн бұрын
Thank you Randy. I think this one was around 8%. I have turned some of the same batch at 15% and it was fine. But I have turned some at 20% where I turn it to size and it has done well. I was give some really wet stuff a few months ago and just letting it sit under my pole shed. The wind hits it and it gets pretty hot. Especially now. It is 100 degrees and supposed to get 104. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great looking bowl. Beautiful grain, walnut is just a beautiful wood to work with. I have used whatever I was finishing the live edge bowls in the osst, do you think epoxy resin would be better? Because it would help keep the edge bark from flaking off after it dries. Stay safe and we are feeling better.
@ThePapa1947
11 күн бұрын
Thanks Harry. Walnut is pretty special for sure. Myself I would not use epoxy resin on the bark. Perhaps a poly finish might help hold it together if you could get it soaked in. Not the wipe on though as that is pretty think. This piece was dry so was not worried about it. Glad you are feeling better. Take care, Gary
