As a Canadian, I'm still mourning the loss of Gordon Lightfoot. I grew up listening to his music when it was new. Having heard some of the music over the past 20 years, I'm glad I grew up when I did, when true songwriters and storytellers like Lightfoot could do it all.

Same ... I'm from Ontario, Canada. My mother went to school with Gordon, in Orillia. I believe she said they even worked together on weekends in a laundromat, when they were kids. That was something I heard many years ago. Mom has since passed as well.

I remember spending summers on my aunt and uncles farm in Ohio and everyday the clock radio alarm would go off and songs like this would go on. Every time I hear the top forty from 1973- it makes me remember tending to hogs. Good memories! Sometimes we didn’t do farm stuff and we would go to Ceder Point

Dylan famously inducted Gordon Lightfoot into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which runs the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, had wanted to put Lightfoot in basically every year since it started, in 1978. But Lightfoot wouldn't go in until they could get Dylan to induct him.

Gordon Lightfoot used to drive from town to town when he was on tour, rather than fly. He was driving north from Phoenix and saw an exit sign for Carefree Highway, to the small town of Carefree. He didn't take that exit, but those words started to play in his head as he drove along, and the song Carefree Highway became one of his biggest hits. You should give it a listen. BTW, I live in Phoenix now, and Carefree Highway is still there.

I was privileged, to see Gordon about 8 years before he died, he was frail, but he never skipped a beat. I also got to meet him and have a picture taken with him. It was so bitter sweet! RIP Gordon, thank you for all your beautiful music, which has helped me to survive to this day!! ❤

I played a lot of Lightfoot when I worked the all night shift at a Vancouver area oldies station from 1989-1992, and "Beautiful" in particular brings back memories of sitting with lights dimmed, and the guitar strumming as the CD machine clicked as it began blinking to let me know the song was ending... I would almost lose myself in the song. Absolutely they need to react to that song, which lives up to its name.

A few years ago a buddy and I were playing golf. It started a light rain around hole 13 or so. And started to increase. It started fairly hard on 18. My buddy was complaining bit about his game and the rain. After we got to the cart when done I said to pull up to that tree for cover. And then I played this song. He asked what the hell are we listening to? Gordon Lightfoot. I told him to listen and be a rainy day people with a positive attitude like this and me at the time. Now loves Sundown so he listened and got it! Love this song!

Gordon is such an amazing Canadian treasure. And there is so much MORE Canadian music that you haven't discovered yet. Blue Rodeo is an iconic Canadian group that has an incredible thirty year rabbit hole to go down. Try, Diamond Mine, It Hasn't Hit Me Yet, Trust Yourself, Bulletproof are just a few of their biggest hits. I know you'll BOTH fall in love with their sound and instrumentation behind them. Big hugs from Ontario, Canada! :)

ABSOLUTELY TRUE!! They love Canadian music when they listen to our artists - Shania Twain, (Gordon Lightfoot), Rush, Heart, Corey Hart, Celine Dion, Alanis Morisette etc. BUT - they haven't even touched the TIP of the iceberg!! I keep wanting them to discover more. I KNOW that they will LOVE so much of it! Blue Rodeo is CERTAINLY one they should hear. The ONLY Canadian Country music that they know is Shania Twain - (& they BOTH really like her.) They have NEVER done anybody else - & there ISN'T anybody BETTER Than Blue Rodeo! You are also right about the instrumentation. I was thinking how much they would like it just the other day. For Blue Rodeo - I would suggest - "5 Days in May" as a start. Not only does it have great instrumentation, it has the romantic edge that I know Amber will like. Afterwards, J. might like to especially listen to - "Rose-coloured Glasses" - & then ALL the rest! J. & Amber, I know that you normally do it this way anyways, but when your discover our new groups, it is BEST to listen to them as we were first introduced to them - either with an Official Music Video OR else a studio version. Live almost never gives the song in its best light & only do it if a person PARTICULARLY suggests it for one OR you have heard at least 1 song already by the artist(s), so you know how they sound before watching something live to see them perform.

BESIDES Blue Rodeo - just SOME of the Canadian artists they still need to check out: Chiliwack - (70s Chiliwack) - Fly at Night - (80s Chiliwack) - My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) Great Big Sea - Ordinary Day - Mari Mac (NOT their normal style but one they still need to hear) Amanda Marshall - Beautiful Goodbye - (to start) Alannah Myles - Black Velvet Tom Cochrane & Red Ryder (both Tom solo & with the band) - ESP. - Lunatic Fringe Spirit of the West - Home For a Rest Gowan - (80s Gowan) - Cosmetics (Amber will love his videos) - (90s Gowan - all perfected) - All the Lovers in the World Trooper - Raise a Little Hell Kim Mitchell - Go for a Soda - (he's a male Amber, just so you don't get him confused for Female Friday 😄 Sass Jordan (female 😄) - Make You a Believer Crash Test Dummies - Superman's Song Spoons - Old Emotions The Pursuit of Happiness - I'm an Adult Now Have J. & Amber done - Glass Tiger - at all? esp. - Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone These are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head AND They have NEVER done: Takin' Care of Business - BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) Somewhere Down That Crazy River - Robbie Robertson If I Had a Million Dollars - Bare Naked Ladies - (the song that started it all) - although in truth - Grade 9 - is a good pick as it is closest to the style of - One Week (& it ALSO gives a depiction into life as a 1st year high school student in the EARLY 80s ie 1983?) I hope J. & Amber DO read & make note of this list & any others anybody else adds that I have not immediately thought of here. Have a great day/night everyone.

In addition to his singing voice, song writing abilities, Gordon Lightfoot was also a very good guitar player. Oh, and he was one of the square dancers on CBC's Country Hoedown, which was hosted by Gordie Tapp. I often wondered if anyone on that show knew what a tremendous future talent they had in Gordon Lightfoot. As for Gordie Tapp, he went to the USA and became one of the cast on Hee Haw.

Amber, that was so cute that little laugh on the high stepping strutters line. I’m so glad we can still listen to that guys voice. Another iconic piece of work from him is The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. I don’t know if you’re aware that all the proceeds from the song Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald went to the families of the crew. And that when Lightfoot passed away, they rang the bell in the Detroit Maritime Cathedral for Gordon. Just as they did for that crew. What a guy.

Oh how I miss Gordon! Another great Canadian singer song writer you shockingly haven’t done yet is Leonard Cohen (he wrote Hallelujah - you did the KD Lang version) but he has some amazing songs as well. Suzanne, I’m Your Man, Everybody Knows, Dance me to the end of Love, Chelsea Hotel #2 (about his fling with Janice Joplin), and on it goes.

In my 60s now I've always been thankful for the music I've had the pleasure of hearing throughout my life. Mom loved the 'big bands' and the crooners...Sinatra, Dean, Como and Crosby. Dad was the 'country' man...Ernie Ford, Buck Owens, Roy Clark and I had a sis 10 yrs older. She introduced me to doo-wap, Elvis, Everly Bros, Beach Boys, The Beatles, Motown and folk. Then I had my own generation's contribution: The Monkees, Three Dog Night, BeeGees, KC disco and awesone 80s music. And I was exposed to classical at school. Talk about diversity!! l watched Top of the Pops, HeeHaw, Lawrence Welk, American Bandstand, Andy Williams, Donny & Marie, and Soul Train. Throw in glorious country Gospel, too. J and Amber's reactions are so fun and enjoyable and I'm glad they're open to listening to such a myriad of music styles. Their channel is one of the best things about the internet.

One of his most iconic Canadian songs was the Canadian railroad trilogy. He was commissioned to write a song to reflect the coming together of Canada for our centennial. Historically it was the railroad that brought us together. He captured it with complete elegance and truth like only Gordon could do. RIP Gordon you are missed

Gordon Lightfoot was a master arranger. The strings, the guitar fills, the steel guitar, and the fingerstyle acoustic guitar! Every note is perfectly placed and then you get his voice and the storytelling! So glad you guys liked this. This is music from my teens and 20's. You should try If You Could Read My Mind, Minstrel of the Dawn, and Don Quixote. Also the Canadian Railroad Trilogy. There are so, so many good songs! Oh, and Approaching Lavender! That's one of my all-time favs!

One of the many reason that the 70's is my favorite decade of music. The massive resurgence of the folk music from people like Jim Croce, Gordan Lightfoot, Dan Fogelberg, Don McLean, Ian and Sylvia, Peter Paul & Mary, Cat Stevens, James Taylor... I could go on forever. There is just something about the relaxing folk music of the 70's that can make any day no matter how hard, stressful, or tiring feel easy. Being a Millennial, I for sure fall under the term polyjamorous. My Itunes music list would make people question, how do you go from something as harsh as Deathcore, to something as easy listening as BJ Thomas, to some Nelly, to some Alan Jackson, to even some Opera...
