Beautiful Boiled and Bent Cherry Wood Turning

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I turned another bowl with a ring glued into it. This is how you make Celtic Knots.
The Cherry wood is more than beautiful. Full of amazing grain and features.
Special thanks to both Rick and Paul for helping this piece of wood find it's way to my shop.
I loved turning this piece of wood.

Thank you very much Mark. Any time a tree is cut down it is nice to have memories of it. Our friends had to have a Walnut tree cut down because it looked like it was dying. HOA pushed hard on it. I got the whole tree and they have a number of turnings from it. Even though they moved to Indiana they still have the memory of the tree. It was a beauty and a shame. Sure glad I do not live in an HOA or they would be SOL. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you very much Rick. Maybe I will make a short on how to bend the wood. At one time I planned on building and acoustic guitar and would have had to make a steaming device. Of course the wood would be much thinner. Now my mind is on making a Ventures model Mosrite body. Will I get around to it....who knows LOL The most fun I had on turning this was thinking of what I had planned for the piece. Little did I know it was going to be such a beautiful piece of wood. Makes it all the much better. Take care, Gary

I really like the wood in this one but there is more where it came from LOL. Take care, Gary

The Sapele Ring makes this piece for me Gary. The right thickness and the right amount of curve in it. I loved the locating dowels you used to align the top and bottom pieces. The grain match was perfect. Lovely story behind the wood and I'm sure Paul will cherish the bowl for a long time. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw

Thank you very much Huw. I fell in love with Sapele after hearing you talk about it. Thanks for that! The steaming was really fun and I used my own cast iron pan. Laverna does not like it as it is so heavy. But I cook a lot of things in it that finish in the oven so it is needed. Oh wait that has nothing to do with wood turning LOL Take care and good to see you back making videos. Must feel good. Cheers, Gary

Gary, I loved your story. A similar thing happened to me. A friend cut down a dying maple and gave me the wood. She said it had come from a tree that started as a seedling in the gutter of her girlhood home. They planted in the yard of their new home. I was able to turn eight bowls and a few candle holders and she had enough to go give to her children and grandchildren. They consider them to be precious family heirlooms. As woodturners we are lucky to be able to create meaningful gifts. Chas

I really love stories like that..i had a story like that one day driving through our neighborhood there was 2 pieces of apple wood on the curb said"free" i rough turned 4 bowls after they dried i returned them and got 4 nice bowls. I had noticed an elderly couple had been walking the neighborhood for health reasons and the guy stopped to see what i was doing in the garage. We talked a bit come to find out that was his apple tree. I told him wait here i have something for you. I brought out 2 of the bowls and said pick one it's yours! He told me later that his kids thought it was so cool that they had that because they used to climb in that tree as kids. And that warms my heart!
