The architecture is actually Albanian, that is why you have not seen these in Turkey. It is confusing for westerners when they read "Ottoman town" it is not a Turkish town it is a town that was built and became popular during the Ottoman Era. When you read Ottoman architecture it means architecture that was popular during Ottoman Era, you will not necessarily find it in Turkey, Turkey was just one part of the huge Ottoman Empire. Those second floors that are larger than the first floors, that you see in Berat and Gjirokaster, were local architects' ingenuity for allowing the load bearing mules and donkeys to pass through the narrow streets and still have a big enough house.

Hey there, you can find it in turkey but we meant that we never saw an entire town with all the buildings that same style. We only saw a few houses here and there that were that style. If you search "ottoman buildings kaleici antalya" in google images you will see some buildings that style with the bigger second floors. We filmed some of them in our antalya video but now they are mixed with other buildings that are completely different styles there. Or just search ottoman houses, they all seem to be like that style

@@TheBeastTheBeast it´s true that Gjirokaster existed before the invasion as its even mentioned in official ottoman documents. During the occupation it expanded. Unfortunately we do not have drawings of the city before that moment so we cant be sure the architecture of the existing houses today was entirely a local invention. To me it looks pretty much heavily ottoman influenced. On the other hand whats unique in Gjirokaster are the stone roofs and partly stone walls. I haven´t seen them in Turkey but thats not a given. On the other hand since I guess no one of us here has a PhD in ottoman and balkan architecture it would be fair to say we dont know for sure the origin of the building style in Gjirokaster.

Hi guys, nice, impressive video; thanks for sharing. I'm half Albanian half Turkish, but never been there. Watching your video, I feel as if I were there. I hope I get the chance to see those beautiful places with my own eyes some day. Greetings from Türkiye to you and to the Albanian people. 🙂
Thanks so much, you guys. I've spent a few winters in Albania, and October and November are very nice months, where you can swim in the Adriatic/Ionian. In Ksamil ,mid oct., there was no one there and no umbrellas/beds at any of the beaches. South of Vlore is also nice, with beautiful water, but in summer it will be the same crazy beach club nightmare. :( I'm from N. California and very much like you, not at all liking packed umbrella beaches. Fall, winter and spring are the best times in Albania. Thery have a very short tourist season, June through August. The only downside is that in Sarande, lots of restaurants are closed in the off season. Not in Vlore, or Tirana though. :) Thanks again, and enjoy Corfu.
The town reminded me of what I’d imagine New York to look like back in the day- so pretty and picturesque. 🙂

Ask for their license and contract if they tell you it is private. Most of them just grab land without the government knowing. It is a huge problem right now in Albania. The police can't keep up with them. Some of them do have a contract with the municipality but some just grab the beach knowing that the police rarely would go there if ever. It is worst in August, because that is the busy season, but in June and July it is not so bad. I personally prefer chez-lounges, even though I have to pay, because those pebble beaches are not that comfortable to lay on, but the trade off is that the water is clear and clean and with a chez-lounge and water shoes it is excellent and I prefer pebbles to sand that gets everywhere. You can still lay a towel and lie down on the rocks, they only own the chez-lounges not the beach.
Albania looks very beautiful! Too bad they don’t control the beach issue. It’s terrible to see all the beds lined up, the drone shot can show you how tight they aligned them and how bad they use every inch of the beach. The castle was very nice. hi Carol hi Chris great video! Thank you again for showing it how it is. So yeah most of the beaches in front of the islands are men made. One can recognize it in the quality and color of the sand that is too white and almost dusty thats why the waterline gets murky like they poured milk. What seems to be missing from your cut are the motorboats near the waterline since many beach clubs apparently need to have their own private pier right next to the sunbed area. I was there around the 20th of May.2022. Still pretty quit for Ksamil standars although many sunbeds were already put into place. The stench of gasoline from the passing motorboates is not to be underestimated (some of them just roamed around from one side to the other without any passengers i guess out of boredom). So we packed our bags and left promising ourselves not to return at that spot for the next decade in the hopes that some things will change for the better till then.

You have to remember Florida has 13,500 km of coastline, Albania has 450 km. All these restaurants and hotels in the coastline have ownership rights from 5-100 years. That is why most properties are issued ownership rights for a very limited time, max is 100 years, many have 5-10 years rights.
GJIROKASTER, The city appeared for the first time in historical records under its medieval name of Argyrókastron (Medieval Greek: Αργυρόκαστρον), as mentioned by John VI Kantakouzenos in 1336 The name comes from argyrón (Medieval Greek: ἀργυρόν, lit. 'silver'), and kástron (Medieval Greek: κάστρον), derived from Latin castrum, meaning "castle" or "fortress"; thus "silver castle". Byzantine chronicles also used the similar name Argyropolýchni (Medieval Greek: Αργυροπολύχνη, lit. 'silver town. The earliest recorded inhabitants of the area around Gjirokastër were the ancient Greek tribe of the Chaonians, which belonged to the Epirote group. In antiquity the local urban centre was located in Antigonia, c. 5 kilometres (3 mi) from modern Gjirokastër on the opposite bank of river Drino.(wikipedia)

We were in Albania a couple of weeks ago the country is beautiful the sea is crystal clear the problem is most of the sandy beaches in ksamil are or seem to be owned by the restaurants and you have to pay to use them, ok but on most of them you can't see the sand because of all the sunbeds crammed onto them.
the beach you went to wasn't Shpella e pelumbave (Pigeons cove). The real pigeons cove, you must take a boat to and cannot be driven and walked to. And yes, sadly many of the beaches are privatized which is sad for locals and tourists alike to see. The only two beaches I recommend going to albania for are Pigeons Cove and Karaburun, both of which are gorgeous. They require a boat to reach, but are worth it.
18:28- The Albanian beach you were swimming on is incredibly close to the island Corfu, GREECE! Yes, you showed us that the land where Queen Elizabeth's recently deceased husband Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh had been born was practically a stone's throw Albania! Not a few Albanians have risked their all to reach Corfu in the last few decades. I think, for that reason, the beaches near there were closed off until quite recently. I agree that the town with the Ottoman architecture was quite picturesque (and the food looked delicious- virtually Middle Eastern). Thanks for showing us this!

just a reminder for everyone who is interested to vist Saranda in peak season - besides the "explicit" as "public beach" designated area (800m by 10m) along the promenade near the port, the City does not have any other free public beach in its surroundings that are easily reachable by car further down south. As all the state owned beaches are rented out to private businesses. Even if on paper not to all capacity the beach bar owners do "de facto" what they please as there is no or little oversight by local police. Sure one can try and squeeze himself on the sides of the beaches or behind the rows of sunbeds if the employees are feeling kind that day and actually let you stay.

We don't mind it, just don't like the fact that every single beach is like that. Terrible for the locals too as that is actually loads of money for the average albanian which means they can't go to their own beaches

@@JumpingPlaces The average salary in Albania is 250 euros per month. A big percentage of the population can barely afford food let alone pay 1500 lek for 2 sunbeds. Thanks to our corrupted politicians we cant even go and have a swim on the beach. If you had visited albania like 10 or 15 years ago you could find most of these beaches open to the public, even on the beach clubs the prices were much more reasonable. Nowadays prices are almost the same as in Greece or Italy or Turkey. Even albanians go for their holidays abroad now cause the service for the prices are much better. Especially the last 9 years my country is going from bad to worst, corruption, narcotrafick, organised crime. More than 600.000 have emigrated these years, most of them youth.

Before commenting you have to educate yourself on how an average salary is calculated, you fool.
Dear @Mendje Lire Beach Clubs are a luxury service and as every luxury commodity they should be available for everyone who wants to pay for them. But they are not a prerequisite for having clean beaches or clean water, and available parking space or beach showers for that matter. That falls under the tasks and duties of the local authorities. Thats what the taxes are paid for by every albanian citizen. So yes its nice to have them as I myself sometimes feel like going there but as you said it´s about the extensive land grab leaving unwilling or financially unable people with poor alternatives if not without any nearby.
Great environment
This became a huge talking point in bondi Australia, all of our beaches are public with no private companies and someone wanted to open one up on bondi beach like European beaches, big big backlash

@@paivitiitta1884 it´s true that Gjirokaster existed before the invasion as its even mentioned in official ottoman documents. During the occupation it expanded. Unfortunately we do not have drawings of the city before that so we cant be sure the architecture of the existing houses today was entirely a local invention.

Очень хорошее видео. Насыщенные краски. Отличная картинка. Прозрачная вода 🔝🔝🔝. Very very good 👍🌴🏝🥥🤌👏
Went in May last year and you get entire beaches to yourself and no sunbeds.

People have to make a living from tourism you jackass.
I have to say that being so close to everyone on the beach is such a turn off. Having been to beautiful beaches in Mexico and the Caribbean where we could have 100 meters of our own space, I would choose that instead. However, I really like the idea of visiting the old towns and mountain areas of Albania. We will just skip the beaches unless we come in the shoulder season.

I’ve always wondered why no one’s done a comprehensive history of the Byzantine church, you know for the general reader.
That sun bed situation is completely ridiculous but nonetheless Albania is beautiful.
@Helen Dudden for the same reason why your ancestors fellow countrymen immigrated in mass to America in the 1840s. try researching this chapter of your own history and you´ll get the point.... eventually.....

Maybe it's better that the nature of the water isn't ruined by humans dirtying the water. Then wreck it for the future. Thank you for the update about all the private beaches. I was thinking to visit Albania but not if it's like this. How do the locals cope?

I guess like in any other country there is a mixed response. From the group who can afford to go on holidays there are the ones who are pissed at the current situation and are boykotting the south for other destinations outside of the country. The other part actually likes the comfort of beach bars or are so used to it by now that it doesnt bother them to have to sit on the sides or behind the sunbeds. And it´s their prerogative to decide whats enjoyable to them. People are different with different tastes just as there are people who like loud music at the beach and others who dont. Then there is that part of the society who barely keeps up and is left with no other choice but the generally rather poorly maintained municipality beaches. The rest has´nt seen the beach in years even though they sometimes live 30min away by car.

how can you say that for sure? Culture in an empire flows both ways. And since we are on this topic a general request to all our turkish friends. Please try and restrain from cultural appropriation of everything you recongnise and like in your former colonies bc thats what we were 110years ago. The ottoman empire was a force for good only to you. For the rest your influence can be roughly summarized in the obligatory drafting of young men, building of mosques and taxes so you could flourish and build splendid royal palaces and finance the military crushing of any revolt. For almost 500years we were left in utter darkness since there was no need to invest on the outskirts of the empire. So a little bit of sensitivity in regards to the generational harm the empire caused would be appreciated.
