"Beatrice" (Sam Rivers) | Patrick Bartley & William Schwartzman
Музыка
"Beatrice" by Sam Rivers, performed by Patrick Bartley and William Schwartzman. Captured in a rehearsal studio in Tokyo, Japan in November 2022.
While I think I may not be old enough, or have reached a point of experience in my own life and career yet to say I'm in a position to truly "pass the torch" yet, I still want to take this time to introduce you to a promising young pianist that astonished me when I first met him - his name is William Schwartzman (@williamschwartzman), who just recently turned 18. Last month, Will told me he would be in Tokyo visiting with his family, so I immediately took the opportunity to bring him to a studio to jam and make some KZread videos. What happened, to me, was the beginning of what I know is the blossoming genius of this young pianist. In today's seemingly endless sea of technically gifted carbon copies, or the reluctance to be anything but "correct", Will stands out as someone who will have one of the next truly original voices in the future of jazz. When I met him at the Vail Jazz workshop, I knew it right away. Will SINGS on the piano with an eager fervor to take on the world with this artistry. It's extremely inspiring.
I'd like to also mention that each song we recorded for this channel was done in one take, because that's all we had time for. This was truly an immensely honest exploration of music in its purest sense, and I hope you can enjoy that transparency with every flub and mistake we left in to keep it as raw as possible. There's not enough of that on KZread anymore.
Thank you so much for watching, and stay tuned for more from Will!

I’m currently driving on a highway in the dark night and this just blasted me off the planet! The trading at 4:50 blew my mind. Your ears and your ability to develop what you just heard is scarily beautiful man

Just a suggestion, but you should post some more music too. I'm always blown away every-time I hear your playing as well, and wanna listen to it outside of the greater context of a video just because I love it so much.

I believe the horn is by JL woodwinds in NY. John Leadbetter {sp?} is a great tech and player😢
Man William’s sound is incredible, very Glasper-esq in the harmonies but so percussive. Never heard anything like it before!
Honestly, the best I’ve heard someone play these changes since Joe Henderson. Pat, I think I speak for many of us when I say we would love for you to have a straight ahead trio. You have amazing technical facility, zero ego and a vocabulary that spans from Lester Young to Logan Richardson and absolutely everything in between and moving forward. Hearing you play this tune made me realize that I’d love to hear you go with that format because of Joe’s rendition with Charlie Haden and Al Foster. It would be a blessing to gift that to us just as it was for Joe, Keith Jarrett, Sonny Rollins and many of the greats of the past and present.
hey guys, great pick from a great artist! i just got into sam rivers recently from the jazz music arhcives, I memediately became somewhat obsessed and bought just about every album. Thew whole progressive big band thing is so up my alley just wish i found it 30 years ago.
Sam Rivers is smiling!
Great to see a young guy playing with some real skills. Gives me hope for the future of jazz. I expect that William will go on and continue to develop and grow.👍
Gotta love William's comping - jumping from one register to another flawlessly, keeping everything together and letting everything flow with unimaginable freeness at the same time
Great of you to promote the young man this way. Love your attitude -- and music of course. Thanks
his feel for style and time is incredible. Very excited to see what more he brings into the world.
One of my favorite jazz players today. Patrick is a joy to hear and very inspirational.
