Beaters' day: shoot all you can

Спорт

Andy Crow is enjoying a driven pheasant shooting day in Kent and posing the question: how heavy is Britain biggest pheasant. He shoots a four-pounder (1.84kg) which he reckons is in with a chance. It is beaters' day so the aim is to shoot as many birds as possible...

Why shoot game birds?
Game is wild, natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Both pheasant and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of game, game shooting is worth £2 billion annually to the rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK government figures) active game shooters in the UK who enjoy bird shooting under the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice.
More than 2 million hectares are actively managed for shooting in the UK creating proven (PACEC, 2014) conservation benefits and preserving important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, in particular farmland birds. UK shooting providers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds every year and maintain over 25,000ha of wild-bird cover.

We had one Beaters day when we treated our beating team to a 338 bird day! The guns all brought a slab of 250 cartridges so the boys had a Ball! The smiles on our boys faces were priceless! Dads mentored sons (legal issue) so that the youngsters could get stuck into a day many could never afford! Best day ever!

Don’t see the point in using these flashy cartridges, I’ve used regular gamebore pigeon shot and had no problem, my grandfather, an ex keeper got given the same by the estate and he’s shot just about everything with it.

This day is SUPPOSED to be for BEATERS and not well known people, to me it's just a gloryfied advertising campaign, the beaters work hard all season for this one day, and a lot of us DON'T get paid, as we do it for the love of the sport, so to a point you are depriving the beaters of THEIR day, all about GREED again.

It's called a beaters day, but the keeper have got many people to thank, like neighbouring farmers people that help him in the summer time, it's down to the keeper who he invites.

Yer well, maybe on your shoot, but I know all the beaters that help the keeper before and during the shoot season, and none of them have seen half the guns that turn up for beaters day, as we are only a small shoot, and it is exactly this that can cause discontent amounst the beaters, we have just been down this road only this weekend gone, and it is because in this case the host is getting greedy, so OUR beaters day was crap to put it bluntly 28 birds!! would you call that a good day for us?? I don't think so.

CharlieTango 1 Don't be so ungrateful. You don't have to beat. You are invited to the beaters day as a gift from the owners. At the end of the day the birds are bought by them and fed by them. If you want a good days shooting, buy your own day. This is problem these days, an unfounded sense of entitlement.

CharlieTango 1 I said nothing about you shouldn't have a day. I am referring to your review of your day as being crap, because there were not many birds. What did you expect? Its the end of the season! Why should the syndicate bank roll a great days shooting. Are you not paid enough? To have a nice walk around doing something you like? You do not have to spend your days beating. And if you really need the money, go and beat another shoot. The syndicate are not required to give a great days shooting. As you know the history, it is never supposed to be a great days sport. Just a few special birds. So stop being ungrateful and be glad you had the chance to stand one day a season. And for the record "we" are the ones keeping the sport alive by paying our money towards it!
