well against c5 morra is hell load of fun, against d5 Blackmar diemer gets em all the time, for the french youv got orthoschnapp, but yes actually caro always annoyed me(though theres hillbilly or rasa studier gambit or fantasy)

In addition to the morra i recommend the Mengarini Variation (2. a3!!) against the Sicilian. It is extremly rare and extremly venemous. It's basically leads to a better version of the wing gambit.

@@joshwantstotravel9516 The option I prefer against the french is the Milner-barry gambit, but I agree with your other choices, also if you REALLY wanna make you aggressive repetuar complete, check out the Matsukevich gambit against the Alekhine defense.

I agree. I have incorporated that in my studies, as well. I don't always want to know the best (i.e. computer) response in a certain position; I also want to know what most players are *actually* playing in that position.

I can't thank you enough for this video! The Caro-Kann defense has been the opening that I could never beat. Now I get excited when I see it bc I'll go with about 80% of the people I play against do not know this trap and the Caro-Kann no longer haunts me! And even if they do, I've still managed to out maneuver them and win almost every time. Love this - thank you!!!!

Mine has been the London. I often play the Scandinavian as black and I find London players do very well against me. I aim to get the bishops off the board. London players are often so formulaic that they get lazy in the endgame.

I got three minutes in and immediately paused to go try this out. Within ten minutes I had my first Breyer Trap victory! Thanks, JS!

FUN FACT! After you reach the engine line, Black actually has a trap of its own. After Qh6#, instead of defending with Qe1, black can play g6 and offer up the pawn. It white accepts the pawn, then black plays Ne5 which opens a discovered attack on the white bishop on e6 and simultaneously attacks the queen on g6, Once white retreats their queen, Bxe6 wins the game as you get to play out the rest of your days two pieces up. Alternatively, If white doesn't accept the pawn and instead retreats their queen (say to h5), you can simply play on as normal up a piece, albeit in a really complex position.

Holy crap, this is a transposition of the ICBM variation of the Tennison gambit. I try to use it frequently against the Scandinavian, but it seems like people almost never fall for it. This version seems way more practical. I'm definitely going to try it. Edit: In my extreme excitement, I commented before finishing the video; I'm glad you mentioned the Tennison gambit. I think I still like the first version more, though.

It works against caro kann because they are worried about their h pawn (so most frequent responses are Nf6 and h6), which is actually safe if black responds with e5. Against Scandinavian ICBM doesn't work because Nf6 is already played + Nc6 is available which protects the queen. A better variation against Scandinavian is the Bc4 + Qf6 setup.

I put in the position after black plays 5...Nd7 (black's best defensive move) and Stockfish thinks that 6.Nxh7 is the best move for white, but I guess the point is that 6.Bc4 is trickier and gives black more ways to go wrong. Yes, the tactics here are similar to the tactics in the Tennison Gambit of the Scandinavian Defense: 1.e4 d5 2.Nf3 exd5 3.Ng5

@@Randomsass There are lots of ways to avoid the ICBM, but they are also full of traps. I don't know any opening so full of life or death decisions!

I found this video a few days ago. Just now played a game, and got the Caro-Kann against me, so I thought: "Let's give it a try." Worked like a charm the first time I tried it. The enemy had to part with his queen on move 8. 😆

Great video Jonathan! I remember showing this line to you on stream several months ago and you tried it in a game but the opponent played some weird move on move 3 like Qb6. Anyways, your analysis is very good. I especially like the Bc4 against Nd7 lines. Probably a practical choice for black is to avoid taking on d3, by playing 4... Nf6 and if 5. Nc3 then h6 or even better Bg4!

Since I love your videos (and have played this trap a few times in the past), I wanted to give you a better move than the one you showed at 3:46 in the video. If black plays h6 and then captures the knight then white should play Queen h5 to check the king and have a forced mate in 6.

Therefore, I have am adding the line to follow to get mate instead of the advantage from moving the bishop to g6. 1. e4 c6 2. d3 d5 3. Nf3 dxe4 4. Ng5 exd3 5. Bxd3 h6 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. Qh5+ Kf6 8. Qg6+ Ke5 9. Bf4+ Kd4 10. Qe4+ Kc5 11. Qc4+ Kb6 12. Qb4#

I've been playing the Tenyson frequently and it is one of the best opening at low to intermediate level because it requires a lot of prep, but it so trappy that anyone unfamiliar will almost certainly fall into a trap. Incidentally, it's also tricky to play as black, which can work too.

This seems like a really fun opening! Unfortunately, after Ng5 my opponents always sense something fishy and would just not greed for another pawn with exd3, going for something like Nf6 right away, since if Nxe4, Nxe4, dxe, QxQ KxQ and the position is dead equal but I can't castle. Maybe I just play Nc3 and open up the possibility of them taking yet again and the position doesn't seem as bad even after KxQ. I'll try it out :)

Go for the line where you don't castle. Since queens and some pieces are traded, castling actually isn't necessary and the best way to connect your rooks is an eventual bongcloud for king activity and you have a fantastic endgame. This Breyer variation looks near brilliant at club level.

So you're the reason why people have started playing this. I have to be honest, the first guy got me. :)

The black can rebuttal the attack on his queen by simply playing knight to h6 and you didn't discuss that.

This variant is used a long time ago and often against Scandinavian.

one of my favorite lines against caro/slav. 'Tennison gambit' is able to play many of C6/D4 openings and many persons doesn't know tennison main points...

I play the Scandinavian (Modern variation pretty much unless they [lay the Tennison Gambit) and what I do against the Tennison Gambit isn't technically the best, but It certainly doesn't allow for that trap. I I'm pretty sure I did get hit with the Tennison Gambit trap you showed here one of the first times I encountered it and that's what promprted my to figure something else out, but it's not that hard to figure something out that prevents it and lets you keep you're extra pawn most of the time.

In my experience trying this a few times, as soon as the white bishop takes the pawn on d3, black simply moves queen to d5, removing the fork and covering the f7 pawn. I’m not very experienced…but this appears to end the attack more thoroughly than moving a pawn to e6. I have to then work a new plan.

JS in the first position you can not to sac a bishop. Stockfish said there will be checkmate in 5-6 moves after Qh5+. But thats works after h6

It does seem very similar to the englund gambit trap! This seems more sound though, since black playing c6 means they can't play Nc6 to defend the queen

On my level (2100 blitz) the first opponent got trapped. 🙂 1. e4 c6 2. Nf3 d5 3. d3 g6 4. h4 Bg7 5. h5 dxe4 6. Ng5 exd3 7. Bxd3 h6....oops....8. Nxf7 Kxf7 9. Bxg6 1-0

This line is sound according to Chessbase database which depth at 52 which give -0.80 but that's so complicated so Komodo 14 recommend 4...e5 which is the refutation.

I have other lines I like playing against the Caro, but I watched the whole thing anyway - I think this is an excellent video, really good, interesting and systematic explanations of the key ideas for both sides.

Now I get it why I have been facing this damned line every time in the past few months

Looks like caro kann isn't a very good defense to e5. Objectively the engines say it's okay, but in reality, it requires black to play very precisely. Like in the advance variation where the bf5 bishop gets harassed.

It definitely helps when you have a black that does not play well. Soon as the knight drops on f3 drop the mainline and play f6 3 f3 f6 Or if black allows Ng5 and does follow your whole line... 6 Nxh7 Qe5+ And now your playing chess and black is winning You only win 80% of the time against a bad Caro player.

Great video Jonathan ! A similar trap (to the one at 3:46) you can set up as black in the Budapest gambit Adler variation where black knight takes on f2 , before that move lot of online players played h3 against me when the knight was on g4 😀

The practical problem with this gambit at club level is that there are several good ways for Black to decline the pawn sacrifice (even if this does not lead to a big advantage for Black). 4 ... e5 is particurly annoying.

If black plays 5. ... h6, then after 6. Nxf7 Kxf7, it's a pretty easy forced checkmate in 5 moves or less after 7. Qh5+, which is even more fun than the queen grab.

The engine score at the end made me laugh. But if you look at it. The king can only be attacked by the rook or queen directly and either the bishop or knight can significantly block the rook check. The queen can add an attacker to e6 by moving to h3 but black can add a queen to defend on f7. White has nothing and will take ages to develope the queen side. Note if black blocks with the bishop it is worse as b4 attacks with a defender so the knight is the best blocker. It is the most absurd position in chess I can think of.

This trap is objectively not great if black has seen it before. As a Caro player, once this video came out there was a flurry of people trying it and ending up with very poor positions after I fell into it once and learned Nd7. The Stockfish move after 7. O-O is now Ne7 (not h6) where none of the sacrifices really work any more and it tends to peter out into a perpetual.

I don't think you specifically addressed 8)...fxBe6 in the line 1. e4 c6 2. d3 d5 3. Nf3 dxe4 4. Ng5 exd3 5. Bxd3 Nd7 6. Bc4 e6 7. O-O Be7 8. Bxe6 fxe6 9. Nxe6... I suppose it is similar to when black plays 7)...Nf6, but there are differences. Great video nonetheless!

Whats the % of games at higher level where black actually takes the e4 pawn? The whole point of caro-kann is to let white take center pawn with center pawn and retake with the c pawn to keep the center. I quickly found out that as black you should avoid initiating center pawn trades.

I once fell for this trap with knight on f6 line and after blundering my queen I played Nbd7 they played Qc7 and after playing e5 a5 Ne8 i managed to trap their queen on c7 !!

one oppening more for my weird stuff... they told me some how i attract bad moves. If they would know :) how much i prepare it.

4:59 What's wrong with black playing Qd5? That to me seems like the easiest way to counter that position. According to the right side of the screen it's not even one of the most played moves. Am I missing something?
