    you have to remember that when Beastie Boys appeared on the scene no one was ready. Grunge had finally made it over the pond and displaced the endless rounds of crappy pop and boy bands and music was in a state of upheaval but these guys were doing something new that just blew us all away. I remember getting three days detention for playing a bootleg copy of this in the Art room over lunch break (totally worth it though).

    I remember EVERY band wanted Jonze to do their videos after this debuted! And you're right. They were already known in the States but "Whatcha Want" took them to a new level until...this. After this came out, NO ONE could touch them.

    I mean, there isn’t another song in existence like Sabotage, and there never will be… it was a song that just absolutely annihilated boundaries, put out by a group that annihilated boundaries regularly… perfect video and song combo for those halcyon MTV/Lollapalooza summer days… But it’s true test is time, and post-RickRubin era Beastie Boys is timeless through and through

    They stated as a punk band before their first album which was hip hop. They always include one or two punk songs or punk influenced songs on their albums.

  • @robertallen7794

    @robertallen7794

    Yup. They originally started out playing at clubs that featured punk music, but they also drew a lot of inspiration from many music genres and liked to experiment with mixing different sounds. Of course, they could see that mixing rap and punk music brought them their greatest success, so naturally they used that to their advantage.

    The Beastie Boys are one of my favorite Hip Hop acts. They're so versatile, tight on their rhymes, and they're hella creative and funny too. It's a real shame MCA is no longer alive. I could really go for a new Beastie Boys album right about now. On a side note, you should seek out what I consider to be the greatest Hip Hop group of all-time, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. 'T.R.O.Y.' aka 'They Reminisce Over You,' is what I recommend.
