44 Magnum 240gr Winchester Big Bore Ballistics Gel Ammo Test

Ойын-сауық

Let's do a ballistics gel test and review of the 44 Remington Magnum Winchester Big Bore 240 grain JHP fired from a Ruger 96/44 lever action chambered in 44 Remington Magnum with an 18 inch barrel.
Checkout my leather gear handmade by me, just for you here: www.masonleather.com/store/c1...
All shots are fired from a distance of 50 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

This is misleading Bull shit that these are bear loads, yeah like black bear could be used on but Alaskan Coastal brown bears or Alaskan interior Grizzly someone would be a moron looking for get killed using any handgun or 44 to 45 cal pistol ammo on large & Dangerous bears. One of my clients killed an 8-foot interior Grizzly in 2005 then had with him a 44 mag handgun and Federal lead bullets with the writing in the box was BEAR LOAD, well we want to test that so called 44 mag Bear load on a bear so the client shot the bear carcass 5 times & 50 feet then we dug what was left of the lead bullets from the bear. Not one 44 mag lead bullet made it past the 8 to 10 inches of fat covering the body and some just pancaked on the ribs and others blow up into lead chunks! So, to make sure no one comes back then talk crap to me I can prove my guiding experiences through my AK guide photos I have on my Instagram account @ dwayneb1959 so to some ignorant smart asses don't even try talking BS to me where I've been there and done that! I even can come up with the photo of this interior Grizzly before skinning it with me holding up the bear's head.

We use to buy these 500-1000 bulk back in the day and loaded them all types of levels. They were good bullets for accuracy. Lotsa plinking. We did load these with a moderate load for youth deer hunting in a 44 rifle. Low recoil and very effective harvest under 50 yards for a couple deer. Your results look really good to me for deer, hogs, black bear.

1.4x expansion seemed underwhelming until I remembered that a .429" bullet at 1.4x is still .6" which is 2x expansion of a 30 cal bullet. Thats more than enough expansion. Too much causes bullets to lose penetration.

I am absolutely thrilled you did this video for the .44 Rem Mag. The higher velocities shows the bullets hold up quite well. I use the Sierra Sportman 240 grain JHP for reloading my .444 Marlin. The Sierra bullet while basically a pistol bullet appears to be tough enough to handle the higher velocities of the trip4. At least Sierra says their bullet is tougher than just a pistol bullet. I've not hunted with the Sierra loads in the .444 with a muzzle velocity of 2200 fps+, but have no doubt it would hold up on deer, hogs and bears. Bigger game such as elk and moose would require a heavier 265 grain bullet. However, the only 265 grain bullet I can find is the Hornady FTX that is loaded in their Leverevolution factory loads. The FTX bullets will not load in standard .444 brass. The ogive is forward towards the tip of the bullet requiring a shorter case so the round can chamber. Plus, I am not a fan of the Hornady FTX bullet. Your own tests showed how the bullet just doesn't hold up. There is too much case separation. Now, if Winchester would make the same load in a longer .444 Marlin case that would be just dandy. I do not care for the Remington .444 FN loading. Plus, at over $65+ for a box of 20, I'll keep reloading for my satisfaction. Thank you.

I've actually chrono'd this stuff and compared it to the regular traditional Winchester White Box 240gr JSP and that stuff you got there hits harder than the regular white box but recoiled softer than the white box in my testing but this is out of a 4.25in S&W Model 69. I don't know how that it could, probably a powder difference but I love it. Average velocity out of my model 69 was 1308 FPS giving you 911 energy foot pounds of energy. In contrast the white box came out at 1244 FPS with 824 energy foot pounds.

If you havent done so already, i feel like no 44 mag carbine test is complete without the hornady loads. Both 225gr leverevolution, and especially the 240gr xtp. It was considered the go-to load before the latest craze from the straight-wall states.

Lots more coming 👍🏼 I use the 240gr XTP’s in my muzzleloader, roughly approximating what they’d do out of a 44 Mag rifle, a little weaker actually (it shoots best with 80 grains of Blackhorn 209 so not a full power charge), they run about 1,650 fps, got two deer back in January with them, did great 👍🏼

I'm still using win white box and magtech 240gr soft points for hunting. Its half the price or better and I'm pretty sure it's the product. Thks Mason. BTW my bullets on deer leave two gushing firehoses in deer. The buck I shot last year at a 100yds had gushers out both sides as he ran. Had a 4" hole on the exit side. Incredible performance out of my rem 788. .7MOA.

I bought two boxes of this stuff in 357 magnum last month for my Ruger GP100 6" stainless & I don't think 357 magnum is adequate for bear protection but I bought them anyway. I was getting higher than advertised velocity for deer hunting I think it would work.

How do the different loads feed through your ruger mags? I’ve heard 270gr is about the limit for the ruger mags before the bullet starts contacting the feed ramp on the mag causing feeding/loading issues and that they don’t like wad cutters. I also hope if you ever get a chance to compare general accuracy between the top loads in each caliber you’ve been testing. It would be interesting to see how they compare relative to each other.
