Bear Attempts To Outwit An Electric Fence

Ғылым және технология

A persistent young adult Black Bear manages to sneak past the electric fence following the lovely aroma of honey. A big fail. Returning two more times the entire episode was caught on security and trail cameras. No bears were harmed.
With the very hot weather in western Canada during the summer of 2021 the berry crop was poor and many bears were displaced by the many wildfires. We had dozens of visits from black bears that year.
The fence has been improved upon since.

    Need to put up a double barrier,a few feet/meters apart,so if the animal get through the first, still has to negotiate the second,by then it would have some idea about the shock,then probably get out, or suffer another electric shock,

    I think adding that ridiculously loud alarm from the ring door bell that the owner can manually set off to deter people who are trying to break in would be useful here. A really good zap from the fence and that blaring alarm at the same time....might be a bit before that bear comes back. And if you repeat it each time, I don't think the bear would try too many times before moving on long term? Or wouldn't that be nice. Lol

    If he came back and it's the same thing each time, he is gonna get comfy around there. If he's desperate enough he will be back and a loud noise and a zap will only work for so long.

    He didn't just "try" he actually did. So much for flimsy electrical fences sold for campers and backpackers which are barely a couple of feet off the ground and may work temporarily until bears figure out they can jump over. Their posts are made of plastic and can be thrown to the ground after a first failed attempt, once on the ground they are easy to step over... The one shown in this video is a solid fence yet that bear wasn't stopped from getting into the enclosure. Black bears tend to be more determined than grizzlies and keep trying and coming back over and over.

    Tape and plain wire electric fences are NOTORIOUSLY USELESS on thick furry/wooly animals, not to mention chickens. Some might get a shock on their wet nose if/when sniffing the wire, but most just walk straight through them. The best improvements are to use closely spaced *barbed wire* (to penratrate the fur), AND to have a very high current with a short frequency sender with a very good (wet) earth stake. Add some vertical strakes to prevent push-through.

    What struck me was how an adult bear could so gracefully slip between two strands of wire that were maybe 20in apart while stretched. If I tried that, I'd surely get tangled and make a mess of the fence. On another note, what delivered the shock when the bear was rocking the hive? Was there a hot wire closer to the hives, or did the bear back into the main fence?

  • @wildlifebybean

    @wildlifebybean

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. We've had ongoing issues with bears for some time now, but roll with it. So far I've not lost a hive. Using 50,000 volts and appropriate amperage we've done well. This guy is a younger bear and has obviously had experience with electric fences. He weighed the pain of electricity versus the taste of honey and larvae. Note his yawning; he was definitely stressed probably because this is an area patrolled by a larger older bear we see all the time who checks the fence, never gets a shock, then moves on. This young guy's pushing his luck. Know that the apiary is not square but rather five sided. The wires on the right side comes in closer to the hives. When he backed up a little he unexpectedly touched a wire. Bingo! I came close to severe damage to my hives. The fence has since been upgraded.

    Thanks for commenting. Japanese Giant Hornets are not yet endemic in BC and hopefully, according to the BC Government Apiarist, probably never will be. A healthy colony of honey bees can usually handle the other more common wasp (Yellow Jackets). In the event the larger Japanese Giant Hornet does become a problem your comment about a mesh may very well make sense much like using mouse guards at the hive entrance.
