Bears in the Modern World - Electric Deer

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

A Montana grizzly bear attempts to retrieve an electrically charged, road-killed deer. The deer is electrified as an experiment to protect hunters’ game kills and, in turn, to minimize bear-human encounters.

1:08 This is fascinating to me because the bear is just lying there, possibly for hours, just pondering the situation and how he can solve the problem. It’s like he’s thinking “What’s different here” and then sees the battery and wonders if he removes that if anything will change. *Very intelligent animal.*

Very intelligent and the way he tests the carcass to see if the shock has disappeared after he knocks the battery down is just wow. This for me is equivalent to a person that doesn't like maths solving a very difficult sum

He knew that the box was fishy and wanted to take it out of the equation. And behold the carcass is no longer live. If this was done again with the same bear,. I bet anything he would move the battery before touching the corpse. Would be great to test this theory.

The third time, after he disconnected the battery, the way he was checking to see if it was gonna shock him reminded me of how I used to be as a kid after I’d unhooked the power to the electric fence.😂 Even though I knew FOR A FACT that it had zero power going to it, I still had to barely touch it and yank my hand back really fast bout eleventeen times before I crossed it…you know, just to make sure.😆😂🤣

Personification and anthropomorphizing… the bear is expecting the shock. After two electric shocks that got its attention the third time something changed and it’s being cautious. Once it’s convinced it’s not going to get another shock it tears the deer down. It doesn’t know what electricity is or that it’s been shocked just that biting that deer previously resulted in an unpleasant physical sensation. Predators are observant and have a good memory, their instincts are to become cautious when something doesn’t react the way the bear expects

Fascinating video. After being shocked a couple times, he starts messing with the situation and disconnects the battery. Then he uses his paws instead of his mouth to test the deer because he knows it won't be as bad if his foot gets zapped rather than his lips. At first, I thought this was a mean thing to do to a bear, but now I am just in awe that he figured it out.

The way it goes on two legs and tests slightly with his paws instead of putting his teeths into it again. That bear put up an imprressive display and it is quite fun to watch how he tears down the entire place. The same thing is what polar bears when they are checking out cabins. Some times they find a way to enter a building and turn it upside down in search for something to eat. One even drank a lot of bear that it found in one cabin. It figured out how to cut them open and licked it up.. Systematically opening all the cans.

Difficult for either one of us to say I suppose, but I don't think it's "clearly" one way or the other. However, to me, it looks deliberate. It does not look to me like the battery just happened to accidently fall over, or that standing on it just happened to accidently knock it over. To me, it looks like he pulled it over with both front paws on purpose, just like bears do with rocks and logs. Of course, I'm not saying that he had figured out the physics of electricity (LOL) but I do think he figured he try ripping up that human-gear and see what happened.

@@danishdutchdeadly1198 I think it's fair to say that the bear accidentally stepped on and turned off the power. Had the generator been a few feet above the ground, I think it might not have "solved" the problem. I don't know. However, it was evident that there was some level of reasoning going on. It seemed to understand that something was providing power to the carcass. It tested out by trial and error by touching its surroundings and, finally, the carcass with its paws. Given that bears are not equally as intelligent as human beings, what that bear did, intentional or accidental, was still impressive.

One that covered 250 miles of fencing for around 10 miles (combined total) of fencing… Yup, that finally did the trick lol. Good fencing and an insane hotbox finally kept him from visiting the neighborhood on the other side of the marsh. Yup, these mini assholes we’re going through the marsh at low tide to hang out in the graveyard of the subdivision beside our 80 acre farm, like 80 acres wasn’t enough for them haha ( we only had a small herd of 4). Tho, the neighbors loved their visits, thank the cow gods for that lol. And that my husbands bullheaded instance was a bit more than the actual bulls.

After seeing this I never go into the forest without connecting myself to a portable electric fence system. The battery is heavy but it's worth it

the bear now knows the source of the shock, so will attack and disable the battery ... wearing one is not a good idea ... I'd be less than "eager" if I were a Michael

Just goes to show bears are quite curious creatures, and quite determined, and certainly intelligent. Of course, the bear didn't go "Oooh, battery. That's where the zap comes from. Better disconnect that." But the bear did note that the battery looked out of place in the natural environment, hence why curiosity saw him move it enough to disconnect it. Still wary of the carcass afterwards, because bears have good memories, like most higher mammals. I'd chalk this up to luck and persistence, mostly.

It didn't know how it worked but seemed to know the zap was somehow coming from that unnatural looking stuff by the tree...I think if they made it much harder to disconnect. Once the bear realized the zap wasn't getting any stronger/more painful it would of decided to tolerate the pain long enough to try and rip the deer off the line.

They're essentially just absolutely massive wild dogs who leave their pack at a certain age to hunt alone. They're very intelligent, most mammals are. Even in the ocean mammals are far smarter than anything else there (that we know of...)
