    Ty for this! As a child beans were a constant in our home. My paternal grandmother raised me and my siblings. She was never ill and was always busy working at something. She grew a large garden of all kinds of vegetables which we children worked ( alongside her ) every day. She not only cared for our health herself but taught us that being busy would keep us safe during the long summers out of school but we would also learn to appreciate nature and growing things. It worked though we complained alot back then from the hard work and responsibility. It seemed overwhelmingly adult business and having been city kids before our parents broke up and subsequently moving out to the country side with her we thought the world had ended. It actually began in the garden and influenced us in every way. It changed who we were. We learned to love everything about growing things and working with nature. Simple foods are best! You are exceptional on YT and much needed! Subbed! 🙏 ✨👍👍👍

    Thanks for this. You learn something new everyday. Im coming from about 45 years of chronic junk food eating, about 20 years of heavy smoking/drinking, and about zero exercise and stage 3 obesity. I had a triple heart bypass 6 years ago at 54 years old. I was blessed that I made it that far, looking back at it. Thankfully I was off the booze and cigarettes a long time by then, so it was at least two major things I didn't have to start tackling in my recovery from the bypass. But I still had a chronic junk food addiction to tackle. Luckily for me that the whole trauma of the bypass surgery sent me into a state of surrender to getting myself healthy. I was blessed because not even a bypass surgery gets some people to change. So I started out on a Mediterranean style diet because that's what is taught in today's hospitals. I guess on the plus side it was sustainable. I might have found a total wholefood plant base diet restrictive unless I had proper people there to explain it to me which hospitals don't have. Actually, it took about 3 months to see my dietician in my hospital and I had to figure a lot out for myself. Anyway, I added walking to my diet as well for about 5 years after my operation. I then introduced resistance training along the way 3 times weekly. Not bad for a guy who couldn't walk 500 yards without chest pain and shortness of breath!!. I lost all the weight (80lbs) in just about 8 months after the op and have been relatively keeping it off. I never really had beans in my Mediterranean diet. Its more fish based. It only since last year that I've been having beans in my food when I ramped up my game after reading about Dr. Furhman's diet and when I was ready to adapt. I ditched all the animal products and dairy and the final little remenants of my process food eating. I was still doing greek yogurts, sauces or curry's from the tin and a fair bit of wholegrain bread but with suspect ingredients. Although Dr. Furhman calls his diet or a person on it a nutritarian........I like your terminology of "healtharian"....it has a nicer ring to it. Anyway, that diet got me to having a near zero tolerance of process food I bake and cook a lot of my own wholefoods now and take control over the ingredients. But getting back to the beans, they are now a big staple in my diet since the meat went bye bye. But I didn't know that soaking them had anything to do with altering the nutrients for the better. I just thought they softened them up and made it easier to cook!!. Also I've started to use canned beans more recently. But that nugget of gold has made me aware that it's better that I get back to soaking and doing my own beans again. Thank you. I just subscribed and will look at more of your past videos. On a final note, personally I'm at the best I've ever been in my life at 60. That's despite having gone though what I have gone through. I've done things that would have been unthinkable in my former life, like climbing about the third highest mountain in Ireland only after about 3 years after my bypass surgery. And I just want you to know that if you read this that its people like you that have made a major contribution to those remarkable feats.

    Listening to this in the UK, where beans traditionally means runner beans (green), broad beans (fava ?) or baked beans (cannellini beans in tomato sauce ?) but since eating WFPB over the last 5 years I have started to incorporate chickpeas, red kidney beans, black beans into my diet. Excellent. I now soak my beans overnight & pressure cook. So much better. Thank you for this wonderful video. 👍

I've been whole food plant based for 6 years, eating starch as my main source of calories and rarely beans and lentils. I don't know why I've not included them because I love them. Thank you for this presentation I am definitely going to start including them as a regular part of my diet.

    Very good information. I've been plant-based for 3 1/2 years and the best way I found to wrap my brain around the transition was to think of meals in terms of what tastes I like then go from there. I love Mexican/spanish flavors followed by asian and then Italian flavors. Next, I looked at what meals I ate then substituted the meats for the beans. My fav all time is the black bean and it goes in almost everything (yes, even spag sauce). Chickpeas are a good stand-in for chicken and have a great chew-ability. Another good way to learn is to go to a restaurant that serves plant-based dishes. I have learned to trust the chef because this is their business and wouldn't do anything to jeopardize that. They have the schooling and experience so allow them to feed you something new. Your pallet will welcome new foods as you get away from meats and refined dishes and then watch what fun you'll have! Good luck, everyone but by all means have fun. It's just food. 😉🌱

    This is one of the sources that made me reinvestigate beans. I've mentioned in other comments about previous illness including obesity. A few years ago, out of desperation, I went keto. There are some 'experts' that really demonize beans. In one example actually claiming that the human digestive system hasn't evolved properly to digest it properly. Certain elements in the vegan community examined this and found that it was animal protein and fat that was degrading the gut biome, creating the observed problems. Earlier this year beans and lentils became a regular in every meal of mine, particularly red lentils, (quick to prepare, very tasty, highly nutritious). I actually have a degree in the field of biology, so I'm a little ashamed to fall for unsubstantiated scientific claims from the low carb bunch. When I fell ill around 13 years ago, it was like being wacked about the head with a frying pan. The upside is, I've totally reshaped my nutritional plan, (eventually). I'm now reviving my qualification and aiming to commit to the study of mental health and physical well being via holistic practice. Channels like this are an amazing inspiration. I've read your book, healing and prevention..... I intend to promote everything you do.

    Glad it was helpful, Shakera. It is great that you are taking steps to include healthy and healing foods, like beans in your diet. Any kind of "heartburn" symptoms can be a result of numerous factors, from eating meals that are too big to imbalances with the liver, imbalances with the stomach acid, and all the way to emotional stresses, like anger and frustration. So if beans are new in your diet, yes, start with smaller portions, in simple food combinations, and give your body time to adjust to the higher fiber content.

    You are absolutely on the right track by changing your health by changing your diet!!!! This is the best way to do it because it is so powerful. Most doctors are not fans of dietary changes because they don't trust that their patients will actually make the required changes and stick with it. But you just have to be motivated enough to do it and then watch your health transform for the better. Cholesterol is one of the EASIEST things to reverse using a whole food, plant-based diet. This way of eating will also help you achieve a healthy weight, which will also bring down all of the other risk factors. For more help and support, I offer the following resources that you may benefit from: 1. Plant-based Q&A articles: www.evolvingwellness.com/page/questions-answers 2. Plant-based video course where I teach what to eat and why, called "Eat Real Food": www.udemy.com/course/whole-food-plant-based-diet/?referralCode=214DAA8CCE20F9A0A284 3. Optimal health food guide: www.evitaochel.com/post/optimal-health-food-guide With the right information and actions, you will not only halt the progression of chronic diseases, but also reverse much of the damage and protect yourself from most chronic diseases going forward. Best wishes!

    @@hapazardvagabond3719 You are super welcome! And thanks so much for your meaningful feedback :) With regard to food combining, if you are just starting out with whole food, plant-based eating, I highly recommend just focusing on that primarily and getting yourself fully comfortable with that first. Food combining is usually a tertiary consideration, the secondary being food quality, and of course, the primary consideration is eating the right types of foods - wholesome plant foods. Mastering things one at a time will usually go over much better because if you try to tackle too many changes at once or try to pay attention to too many things at once, you can easily get overwhelmed and this is why a lot of people abandon healthy eating in general. They try to adopt an "all or nothing" approach, rather than a "step by step" approach, the latter of which provides lifelong sustainability for your dietary habits. The most important food combining guideline to apply always is to avoid having fruits or sweets AFTER meals and in general eat fruits on their own or with light foods that agree with you. For example, you could mix fruits with grains but you would not want to mix fruits with beans. As for eating the chili with a whole wheat wrap, yes, that is possible, as beans and grains often go well together for most people. Ultimately, give your body time to adjust to all of the different whole plant foods and then see how it responds to certain food combinations. When your body is your guide, this is when you get the most valuable information.... as long as it is actually our body, and not our mind getting in the way ;) Kind regards.

Please read the following for more info: www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/blog/beans-will-rock-your-world/ If you are diabetic or have blood sugar problems, the solution is to change the entire diet to a whole food plant-based one, which can reverse, heal, and prevent diabetes most effectively. What about plant iron vs animal iron ? I heard the second one is better as the body absorbs it easily. What’s your take on it ?

  • @Healthytarian

    @Healthytarian

    Жыл бұрын

    There are numerous things to compare and consider when speaking about heme vs. non-heme iron. Absorption is just one aspect of many things that need to be considered. And when all things are considered in context - not as isolated details - the whole picture that emerges is that the safest and healthiest way to go is to get iron from whole plant foods. Heme iron (from animals) has been connected to other health problems, including cancer, and the package it comes in, the actual animal product itself, is full of health risks and downsides ranging from cholesterol to the wrong bacteria, inflammation, and so on. For more info about this, please refer to some of Dr. Michael Greger's research on it here: nutritionfacts.org/?s=heme

    Isn’t hummus a form of processed garbanzo bean? Meaning there is less fiber due to food processing as well as a higher glycemic index due to the fiber in the bean has been broken down. I noticed I get a quicker glucose spike with hummus than eating garbAnzo bean of equivalent weight.

  • @Healthytarian

    @Healthytarian

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, it is but the level or processing depends on whether it is done at home or commercially in a food factory. Homemade hummus is many times better than any store-bought commercial one. And yes, you may notice differences in how you feel after it depending on the level of processing and the ingredients used. Commercial, store-bought hummus is much higher in oil, whereas the best homemade hummus will contain NO oil. Likewise, commercial hummus will normally be highly heat-treated, whereas homemade one won't. So you can experiment to try with these different versions to see the difference on your body. But the fiber is still there for your body to benefit from.

    Hello Mario. Thank you for your comment and feedback. Sorry for my late reply as I am not on KZread much these days. To answer your question, a true "whole food, plant-based" diet does not include ANY animal products or parts, such as eggs. However, there are transitionary steps and modified versions of plant-based eating where each individual gets to choose if they are going to include any animal products in small or occassional amounts or not.

    I have my own chickens and I eat a couple of eggs each day to avoid a b12 supplement. I feel it is better to get vitamins from food instead of supplements and I control what they eat. Although they eat what they want while free ranging. I also feed them English walnuts so the eggs should be high in omega 3 as well.

    So canned beans are not the best choice? I eat a couple lbs of beans per day and the flatulence is out of control. Even after 3+ years of eating wfpb. Does soaking really help with that? And, can you freeze the beans after they have been soaked and/or cooked!

  • @Healthytarian

    @Healthytarian

    8 ай бұрын

    Cooking your own after soaking from dry is definitely the healthier way to go as you have more control (quality control) over your food and you are avoiding most of the industrial handling and processing of your food. And yes, you can freeze cooked beans. But quality aside, it sounds like you are also eating too many beans for your own good. A couple of pounds per day can be heavy on your body regardless of the bean source, type, or quality. Do not fear not getting enough protein, that is a greatly exaggerated idea and if you eat a basic variety of whole plant foods and enough food for your daily needs, you will cover your protein needs just fine.

    I didn’t mean a couple lbs a day, I meant a couple cups a day. Also a couple lbs of other fiber rich foods (kale, cabbage, broccoli). My kids actually get mad at me. It needs to stop and I have no idea what to do.

  • @Healthytarian

    @@cfleming614 In such a case, look also at other parts of your diet and lifestyle. If the right gut conditions are not there (i.e. the right microbes) you will continue to have trouble digesting high fiber foods. Sugar, alcohol, tobacco, and prescription medication all wreak havoc on the gut microbes and cause intestinal imbalances. And if regular antibiotic use is involved, that will continually keep knocking out the good bacteria, which will prevent you from being able to properly digest your food. You may wish to consider connecting with a plant-based healthcare provider to fully assess your diet, lifestyle and health history to help you figure out what is going on and how to remedy it. What if we are allergic to beans, tofu and legumes? What else to eat for protein?

  • @Healthytarian

    @Healthytarian

    3 жыл бұрын

    Monica, it would be extremely rare for a person to be allergic to ALL beans and legumes. If you are asking personally about yourself, where did you get the idea that you are allergic to these foods? Beans and legumes, aside from soy are not even allergenic foods. What I am sensing is that you have a hard time digesting such foods, which does not mean that you are allergic to them but that your intestines are in a state of inflammation and disease. This is the most common cause for digestive discomfort from certain foods for people today due to poor diets full of animal products, processed foods, fast foods, and sugar foods, in addition to frequent use of pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol, and other toxins. Either way, the ANSWER, and SOLUTION is not to avoid such healthy foods but to *heal your intestines and your body* so that it can properly digest such healthy foods again. As for protein, all whole plant foods have protein and when we eat enough food and calories for our daily needs, we get enough protein too. I provide a full explanation of this all here: www.healthytarian.com/post/protein-in-plant-foods

    There is a lot of misinformation and too much going on in these examples you are providing to just blame beans. Soy, perhaps yes, but all beans, definitely no. Even within the legume and bean family peas, lentils and traditional beans all digest differently and have different effects on the body. When we try to use blanet statemetns or apply an "all or nothing" idea, we will always run into problems because it is just not an accurate way of seeing or assessing the situation. As I said, soy can be an allergenic food for some people, but regular beans, especially when cooked properly are not. People today eat very bad diets and have very diseased bodies and when they try to eat whole plant foods, their bodies have a hard time digesting these foods because they are not used to them. This does NOT mean that they are allergic to these foods or should avoid them. It means that they need to HEAL THEIR BODY by not eating the foods and drinks that hurt them, as I explained in my previous reply to you. The answer, again, is not to avoid these foods, which are some of the healthiest foods for the human body, but to start by fixing the diet and removing all of the foods that ARE actually causing inflammation and acidity and problems in the intestines. Anyone who is serious about WFPB eating and is experiencing a lot of health problems or symptoms should be working with a plant-based nutritionist or doctor to be properly informed. Otherwise, there will be a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding that will continue to sabotage their effforts. Remember, medical doctors are not trained to know about nutrition and definitely not plant-based nutrition. To find support for yourself or any of your friends or family who are serious about improving their health through plant-based eating, refer to the folllowing website that can connect them with an appropriate healthcare provider: plantbaseddocs.com/ In addition, please refer to the links I included in my previous reply to you for all of the different foods you should be and could be eating as part of a WFPB diet and where you can get all of your protein. Great to hear, Patricia. Canned beans are always an easy option if we cannot soak and cook our own at home.

    I swear, chickpeas can be soaked for days and be the freshest of fresh and they still take 5 days to cook 🤣 chickpeas are easier on your life when bought canned and rinsed well!

    Hi Michele, that sounds very odd as chickpeas start to sprout within 48 hours of being soaked and are one of the easiest legumes to cook. If you are using fresh dry beans, then the only other likely explanation is that the water you are cooking with is very hard. Chickpeas soaked for 24 hours cook in about 45 minutes or less under all normal conditions. To make your water softer, just add some salt when cooking the beans. I have cooked every variety of dry chickpeas, even in different countries, and the only time their cooking is extended is if the water used to cook with is hard. But this applies to all other beans too, and again, assuming the beans are not old or moldy.

    @@Healthytarian Ummm, humor. It was humor because they take the longest to cook even after proper soaking when it comes to cooking beans. I thought the extreme length and the laughing emoji made that clear. (Plus I never add salt to my beans when cooking... makes them grainy and more prone to splitting. Salt always after cooking.) Thanks for the feedback though!

    Yes, indeed. Most people in the US and Canada do not know that and think that there is nothing wrong with GMOs due to how they are marketed in these countries to focus on profit over human and environmental health.
