Totally. Trying to recreate tv magic can veer off into cringe territory if not executed perfectly. There was no cringe here. I think her character was the most difficult not to make look awkward, but she nailed it like she's been on tv her entire life. It's glorious.

Yeah I thought so too: it is this section at 7:50 where he talks about "potential energy increasing" as the magnets get closer. It's the magnetic force increasing (as a function of 1/distance cubed) if I remember correctly.

I was not a kid when Beakman was on.. I was a full-grown adult.. but I was working as the art director of a kid's Science Museum. Man, he was a HUGE inspiration! It's hard to fathom just how HARD it is to take scientific concepts and make them not only fun, but understandable. I LOVE Beakman! I was almost in tears when he popped up.

AHH!! I watched every episode of Beakman's World on endless repeat as a kid, and this was just an overload to nostalgia. Spot-on tribute. And the video was just plain awesome and informative as always, gotta love this channel!

Hehe, fun fact: I watched Beakman on a color TV back in the day, but it was missing the portion that displayed green. So for years I thought Beakman had an off-white lab coat :P

I had no color issues, but the lab coat always seemed like it should have been some off color. Especially since he made the whole show seem like something thrown together at the back of a junkyard. Loved that show, too bad its reruns died with Saturday morning cartoons.

I loved this show so much. I remember sending a letter once. Having just learned how to properly write one at school, I neatly copied the address, made a funny-looking envelope, and asked my parents to take it to the post office. Thing is, I live in Brazil and I watched it dubbed in Portuguese, so I wrote the letter in that language, thinking Beakman would understand it. It wouldn't be surprising if the show didn't even exist anymore when it aired in Brazil, because it's cheaper to purchase rights to air old programs. I have no idea as to what happened with that letter.

Cute story, @Pedro Câmara I also live in Brazil and Beakman's World powerfully influenced my love for knowledge. The mousetrap scene in the Madame Curie episode never left my memory. This is my first time hearing Paul Zaloom's voice. I watched the show dubbed on TV Cultura in the 90s. I'm now discovering that the original series was shown in the US with only 2 years in advance, from 1994 to 1994.

I feel like the 90s just punched me in the face. With a brick. And the brick is made of knowledge.

I love the video, and I'm a huge Beakman fan - I loved it growing up and my kids watch it today. There is a small mistake in the science in the video though. At 7:25, Beakman explains how magnets' field interaction increases in strength as they approach, but he also says that potential energy increases at this time as well. It doesn't; it's actually decreasing (though the force between them is definitely going up.) The magnets have maximum potential energy at infinite separation and lose energy as they approach in the same way that a ball gains potential energy as it is moved away from Earth. That's why it requires energy to separate them once they're stuck together (at a potential energy minimum.)

Thanks! But I'm afraid you are slightly mistaken. Yes, potential energy between two magnets (with opposite poles facing) is higher, the wider the distance between them. But not indefinitely, only up until the outer edges of the magnetic fields' attraction. The idea in that part of the video is that Beakman brings the magnets from a distance where they don't interact at all to a distance where they start to, thereby increasing the potential energy.

As the magnets get closer with opposite poles facing, the potential energy becomes more negative, not more positive. If the same poles were facing, they would become more positive. Magnetic fields don't have set distance limits. They go as far as photons go.

Think of potential energy like height. Positive potential energy (same poles facing) is like a hill (positive height). To move them closer, you need to go up the hill. This requires work or kinetic energy. Negative potential energy (opposite poles facing) is like a valley. Moving closer lets you do work, or increases your kinetic energy. Moving closer decreases your potential energy by making it more negative. This assumes you define zero potential energy as occurring an infinite distance away.

For real, practical magnets on Earth, infinite separation and "far enough apart that you can't feel them attracting in any way" are essentially the same thing. However, if you put two magnets in space at that separation, the lack of all friction will show that they are still attracted to one another reasonably strongly. The force goes to zero as you approach infinite separation, so the potential energy is at a maximum at infinity. Any closer than infinity means a decrease in energy. Practically speaking, "pretty far apart" is effectively zero, but you can never increase the potential energy of two magnets by bringing their opposite poles closer together. (Their like poles are at a maximum when touching.) Blargh, I missed an earlier comment, so part of this didn't make sense in context. In short, yes, magnetic fields extend infinitely far into space, in exactly the same way that gravitational or electric fields do.

@5:00 Actually, over a long enough span of time, the spinning wheel will grind down to a halt, having radiated its energy as gravitational waves. It would take a very, very, very long time, mind you. Edit: Actually, a spinning wheel does not radiate gravitational waves unless it is non-homogeneous. Quoting WIkipedia: "In general terms, gravitational waves are radiated by objects whose motion involves acceleration and its change, provided that the motion is not perfectly spherically symmetric (like an expanding or contracting sphere) or rotationally symmetric (like a spinning disk or sphere). A simple example of this principle is a spinning dumbbell. If the dumbbell spins around its axis of symmetry, it will not radiate gravitational waves; if it tumbles end over end, as in the case of two planets orbiting each other, it will radiate gravitational waves." A spoked bicycle wheel would radiate, but a disc wheel wouldn't.

Also, space isn't QUITE empty. There are trace amounts of matter, mainly hydrogen, so there would be a nearly-zero-but-not-quite-zero amount of friction. Like you said, though, it would still take a VERY long time to slow down.

Beakman's World was the show that first piqued my interest in science and understanding the world around me. I even wrote in to the show, because that was something that you could do. I would not be the person I am today if it were not for Beakman; He truly had that large of an impact on 10 year-old me.

I am 4 years too late, BUT I LOVE THIS! I used to watch Beakman's World all the time. I found this because I was looking for a Beakman's world GIF (to see if any existed) and a scene from this video showed up. So I went to look for it. I'm so happy. Thank you.

Wow, so cool to see Paul playing Beakman so many years later. Hasn't changed a bit since the golden days of watching his show on TLC.

The production of this was like a TV episode. The girl acting was really good and the VFX were top quality. Really entertaining and informative! Excellent work, as always.

Captain, you've excelled yourself yet again.

I was twelve years old when Beakman's World came out, and I was instantly a fan. Paul Zaloom is awesome. I was sad to learn that Mark Ritts (Lester) passed away in 2009.

I had no expectations of ever seeing Paul Zaloom play Beakman again- so this was an incredible (and touching) surprise! His voice sounds very different to me now, but he's still got it. Thank you for making this episode happen!!❤

1) Bill Ny is an actor, he was never a scientist. 2) Given his recent SJW turn and propagating of bullshit, I doubt CD would want to have anything to do with Bill Nye now...

This episode/tribute is such a labour of love. You got so many of the tiny details that made Beakman's World so entertaining to young science lovers. My nostalgia is in overdrive lol. This is absolutely fantastic work!

I discovered this channel a last week and while I was watching through your videos I thought to myself, "This guy reminds me of that science guy with the weird hair and green lab coat that I used to watch as a kid." I couldn't remember Beekman's name, I was like eight years old. Then this video came up and I couldn't believe it! That's him! Love your videos Captain! I don't know how it took me so long to find you!

This is AWESOME! Beakman's World was one of my favorite shows growing up. Bill Nye was ok about just showing and explaining science, but Beakman made it fun! And props to Cap D for the level of accuracy in recreating the look and feel of an actual Beakman's World episode from the random sound effects, to Ray's appearance. The only way this could have been better would have been to have Lester in the episode too. RIP Lester (Mark Ritts)

1st - I'm having a blast from the past, and this is not even in the languange I was used to watch beakman (brazilian here). Thank you so much you guys. 2nd - The only thing missing from that nearly perfect video is an intro with two penguins watching tv on the north pole.

This is one of the highest quality KZread video's I have seen in quite a while

I just found CD a few days ago and am burning through everything. I was waiting to comment till I got to the most recent video, but this episode is so amazing and special. I was honestly thinking that CD is like a modern-day Beakman in a lot of ways, so to see him actually collab with Beakman? Made my day. Most underrated channel I've ever come across. I can't believe I haven't heard of CD considering how big of a skeptic I am.

Videos like this should be on TV for kids to watch after school.

Man, the actress who plays Ellie (Crystal Shannon) really deserved more than her imdb page suggests her career gave her. If she will put this much into a KZread video!

I'm a few years late to this party, but it's great to see Beakman again. His show was one I would not miss. Liza (who later did the female voices in South Park) was my favorite assistant then, but Ellie did a great job here.

The cheesiness is MST3K-worthy. Captain D deserves much respect. And I forgot how funny Beakman is.

This was so excellent. You, Paul and Shannon have something here. Throw it on Kickstarter and let's fund the first season.

after many years I keep watching this video, it's awsome thanks for this.

I've been binge watching Captain's videos, and I can't understand how I only discovered this from someone mentioning it on a podcast. Amazing. Love that this episode exists and it's amazing. Whenever he adopts another show's silliness, he goes all the way and it feels just as good as my nostalgia believes it would be to go back and watch Beakman.

Statements like what you just made are exactly why the likes of Beakman's World still ought to exist. Unravelling the tapestry of misunderstanding, preconceived notions, and deliberate ignorance takes more than just well explained facts.

There should be a petition to get Beakman on youtube. Patreon should be helpful. We need to make a smart inspired generation again!

I remember when I was young my dad was a chemist so I would watch beakman's world so I could be like him. I forgot the name of the show until I watched this. So much nostalgia

hooooly crap, that was so well done~ 😀I loved Beakman as a kid and you guys recreated the show perfectly; from the sounds, to the gags, to the visuals. amazing. and it’s so nice to see Paul Zaloom reprise his role as Beakman ❤️

As a European I've never heard about Beakman's World before. But every new CD episode is just as perfect as the one before.

Beakman's World came on Saturday mornings. It was usually the final show, before the end of Saturday Cartoons. I do remember Beakman, predating Bill Nye (also, an amazing show) but not by much. Maybe a year or two. Both shows filled the love of science in kids, in the quirkiest way possible. I truly have and always will be a fan of Beakman's World. I wish something could be done, to bring it back.

Thank you for bringing me back to my childhood; if only for a moment.

Ever since I noticed a snap cut that zooms into the next take. I can't help but look out for the next time they snap their heads or move unnaturally quick. Great video. The cuts don't hurt it. But I can't stop seeing them now. Haha.

I remember watching Beakman's World when I was but a weeeee lad. He had an old guy dressed up as a giant rat too, right?
