Be True to Your School (1982 LP Review)

Музыка

Wheeeeeeeeennnnnn some old single is not easily available; and you don't want to pay royalties; I say abridge the other albums in the catalog; and make a brand new release...
Called "Be True to Your School!" Just like you are to your girl or guy!
Capitol Records took many of the Beach Boys' 1960s albums and reissued them throughout the late 70s and early 80s in an abridged form. Usually two songs (or tracks) were removed. This way, new Beach Boys fans could start their classic collections without breaking the bank.
But what to do with the tracks they cut? Surely those could be made into something bankable as well...
That brings us to 1982 and the new "Be True to Your School" LP. Taking the eponymous and very successful single (which had never been made available on LP before) and combining it with other cut tracks from the abridged reissues, we have a fun little sampler of Beach Boys songs from 1963-1965.
So join me for the raucous school single that seems to be forever stuck in mono, three bopping surf instrumentals, Hal Blaine as a carnival barker, and one deep cut that fits far better than it should.
Do you have any Capitol reissues?
Hats off to the grads! Remember to always be true to your school!

Great analysis of these re-issues and an always-impression collection of music! I didn't realize the single version of "Be True..." didn't make it to album until 1982. Amazing! Keep up the great work, Betamax!

The way Capitol dealt with the Beach Boys catalog when referring to leftover tracks reminds me of RCA’s way they dealt with Elvis songs that were not on any albums in the early 70s. They put them on the Camden label which like Pickwick was a budget label.

That's interesting! Good to know that Capitol wasn't the only label doing stuff like that.

The green labels reissues were good when they were true mono or true stereo, but sadly Dance, Dance , Dance and California Girls were in bass on one channel, treble on the other channel fake stereo- not Duophonic though notwithstanding what it says on the album covers.

Thanks for the info about the mixing and labels! I'll be on the lookout for more of the green ones as this is the only one I have. Thanks for the heads-up regarding the digitally extracted Be True to Your School as well.

They weren't kidding when they said "abridged reissues!"
