How’s everyone doing?
I think I took a bit of a different direction with my interpretation of this song’s chorus. The original chorus uses the word “덤덤해지네,” which is translated as “I feel calm” in the MV, but it’s more about a feeling of numbness after experiencing sadness (according to the fandom’s wiki for the song). Hwasa, the original artist and songwriter, apparently wrote the song “to comfort people who are experiencing those feelings of numbness.” When re-writing the lyrics into English, what I got from the song was that the songwriter was experiencing a lot of sadness from the loss of a loved one and was in need of comfort, and maybe they were also experiencing guilt when those feelings of sadness started to become duller as time passed and life went on. So they have this kind of inner turmoil while at the same time feeling like there’s hope ahead as they experience the small, ordinary happinesses of life. And bit by bit, things get better.
For those of you who might be experiencing a lot of stress, sadness, numbness, and anything else for a whole variety of reasons-end of the semester with a whole bunch of projects and exams, unfruitful job searches, just trying to make ends meet, struggles with belonging-I hope things get better, bit by bit and breath by breath. It’s okay to give yourself permission to slow down, catch your breath, and find joy in really small things. You also don’t have to feel bad for feeling bad or tired or numb. It’s easy to get caught up in your head and make stressful things bigger than they already are. Remind yourself that everything really will be okay-and more than okay at that.
