No they didn't. It's always been a mix. It didn't become popular outside of the black community until people saw lighter skin tones doing what had already been done for years. The Japanese are just great as this dance style.

As a youngster in the 80’s I absolutely loved breakdancing and in middle school I would go to the local high school at nights to take lessons to improve. Such a great era that we grew up in. I wouldn’t trade that in for anything
