Then 2 years later for Barcelona Olympics it was Barcelona by Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Cabelle. Opera seemed to be a little trendy in the pop world in the early 90s.

1978 is the first world cup I can remember. It was a life changing experience and sparked my life interest in the beautiful game. I always thought that the BBC themes were more classy than ITV's, with classical music featuring a lot.

Nothing will ever beat the summer of 1990!

Although France '98 and the "If" poem read by Des (on a distant football anthems CD) was also superb.

I never saw the BBC credits for South Africa as I went on a Euro tour for that month, watching the matches in bars across various countries. Drove all round in a London Black cab using it as a camper. The tourists loved it.

The 1978 Titles must have been edited as the Tournament progressed,as all the crowd and match shots were taken from the 1978 Tournament itself.The Music was 'Argentine Melody' written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Perfomed by 'San Jose featuring Rodriguez Argentina'(Rod Argent).

Italia 90 is possibly the greatest intro to any televised sporting event ever.

1990 still remains the best ever world cup intro. the BBC have never done themselves justice since.

Yes but the BBC cheated by stealing music created by a famous composer (Puccini). They did the same in 1978, 1982 (both Lloyd-Webber), 1994 (Bernstein), 1998 (Faure) and 2006 (Handel).

I must say, having watched the ITV World cup opening titles, the BBCs are a lot more memorable.

France 98, such fond memories. My first World Cup I can remember vividly. Only have vague memories of 94 as I was only 7.

Loved the BBC Sport globe with the rings round it before sports coverage came on. Wish it came back for nostalgia sake.

When it comes to the BBC's World Cup opening titles, 2002 does it for me. Throws me right back to when I was in my early teens. Nostalgia.

Great shout. The Owen goal on the bullet train still gets me pumped. Watching football with sleep still in my eyes. 2002 was really unique !

1998 Pavane Faure the most beautiful, I liked the Euro 2000 one also but of course not on here and not forgetting Italia 90.

90 & 98 the best.

1990, those that were old enough knows this strikes a chord when u hear the opening seconds, quite emotional actually, thats how it was tho, seriously. football was nearly on its arse, and England lifted the nation that summer and football launched to the top again.

They are all generally good but 2018 is amazing. Perfection.

BBC Italia 90 is the greatest World Cup intro ever

ITV nail it over the Beeb in 1998 but the 1994 one (the first one I remember,although the first WC after I was born was in Mexico '86) trumps the ITV effort every time.

That 82 opener, love when it slows down, feels like football is the ONLY thing that matters on the planet

Fun Fact: The 2014 titles was to have Gerrard with an excited smile while England were still in the tournament... but because that cup had one of England's worst performances most people saw frowny Gerrard

The best and excellent intro was the one from the soccer world cup Korea 🇰🇷 Japan 🇯🇵 2002. ❤️💕

1982 the best one for me

1978-1990 were amazing - the rest have been dire. Even some of the ITV ones have been better since then. That’s how bad they have been.

That 1982 tune was the best. Better than the Leonard Bernstein one. Better than the Pavarotti one. Even better than the Stevie Wonder one.

Nah, English get worked up about it because of semi finals but actually the knock out games were dire. 82,70,86 and 06 were all better.

My problem with the first couple of tournaments here are the absolutely shoddy clips they use. Did they show some great goals, silky pieces of skill or memorable moments? Nope - 1978 had a series of clips of managers (hold on to the edge of your seats everyone), a bunch of nothing, and a lingering shot of a huge fat guy to finish off. 1982 livens things up a bit with a man yelling, another man yelling, a referee touching his face, a bald guy yelling, and another guy yelling. What a load of wank.

Wonder what BBC credits will be like for Qatar 2022 in a few weeks time.

The death knell was when it went all minority sports on us. The idea of sitting down on a Saturday eating beans on toast and watching “The Swimming European Championship from the Bournemouth BIC” didn’t hold well with me and made me think “Sky’s ruined this show”.

All just got a bit shit after 1994 didn't it?

Yes - 78 to 1990 were fantastic. They haven’t even bothered since 1990 - and who could blame them? 1994 grated as WTF was it doing in America anyway…

They all went a bit downhill after 98

1986 and 1990 the best, 1994 and 1998 the worse. It hits cringe factor when the titles go all cultural on the host nation but it’s really milked. That PowerPoint looking recreation of the official 94 World Cup logo and use of the song “America” did it for me, but it’s nowhere as bad as ITV’s “Gloryland” effort. “Azteca”, the 1986 theme tune was released as a single.
