BBC TVC Television Centre Final Look

Ойын-сауық

My final look round BBC TVC, with my camcorder, just before it closed for redevelopment. I worked in the video recording area mostly in the basement from 1978 to 1985. I learnt to edit video from Pete Dunkley and Dave Jones by doing their presentation trailers editing for them in my spare time, thank you to them. So many secrets in those walls, but the Christmas outtake tapes were fun, and after a time everyone started showing outtakes. For many TVC was a second home, I loved it.

I worked there in the sixties, on production side. Reminds me of going out on night filming from TV Centre. Looking back on it now, we did some very pioneering work in the world of television but didn t realise it then!!

Such a huge part of my youth, even though I was never there, it was present in so much of the big national TV events that we witnessed on the box. It is a shame the building couldn't have been refurbished, updated technically (with a bit of a clearout by the looks of things!) then returned to its original use.

Such a shame the BBC moved out of TVC, it held some great memories for me watching as part of the audience an episode of Last Of The Summer Wine being recorded and The Paul Daniel Show, where I ended up on the cutting room floor after he did a trick with numbers asking for audience members to write down numbers on a board, he unfortunately got it wrong so it was rerecorded. Along with other shows I saw. ... I used to be quiet a regular but then I was working at BBC Elstree at the time in the kitchen. The memories will stay with me for a long time

Also one of the Generation Game recordings. I was offered an apprenticeship with the BBC, repairing cameras etc after they had been out on location. At that time having just left school I did not want to have to leave home and do this course in Bristol. Now retired after 40+ years at HMRC!

Great upload. I got to tour Broadcasting House back in 2014 but I wish I had gone to TVC while I still had the opportunity. @@marcusdamberger It was located next to a load of other colour grading equipment and I know for certain that the BBC bought several generations of Pandora systems. The SGI O2 was also used for their later systems such as the PiXi and the MegaDef. I’m not sure if the BBC had a MegaDef but they definitely had several Pogles because they were used to restore and colour-correct old episodes of Dr Who and Dad’s Army. If you watch some of the restoration videos the BBC have uploaded, you occasionally catch a glimpse of the Pogle control panels set into the desk.

I wish the BBC truly would open its archive, after all, we all own it & as I thought it was going to do as opposed to do. with a selection of a few classics thrown in, Brit Box being a prime example. There a few episodes on KZread but I would love to watch seasons 1 & 2 again with Shane Richie & Peter Simon. If you wanna see the final generation were health & safety was there, but didn't interfere, Run The Risk was it. I don't understand why this happened. Was it cheaper to farm out to Salford and Elstree than it would have been to maintain and/or upgrade TVC?. I think it's a real shame they ditched it. It's an iconic and history making venue. But I watched a kind of tribute documentary on the place as it was being wound up, and it was obviously an extremely innovative and creative hive. But it was broadcast not long before the Jimmy Savile thing all came out. And a couple of the interviews alluded to the place being a bit of a den of iniquity, and I remember thinking the place had been a tad sordid at times. I wonder if that documentary would ever be re broadcast unedited given the things that have came to light since.

It was a sad move, but he building was old and expensive to run or refurbish and there’s not much money in the pot. The licence fee has fallen behind in recent years and people just don’t want to pay more than 25p a day for 13 BBC TV regions, 8 TV Channels and 15 local radio stations and also the world services. We make our choices I guess.

The BBC has production studios based in BBC Elstree which is around 16 minutes away from the old Television Centre. They moved to Elstree in 2013 whilst work was completed on Television Centre (or what is left of it). At Elstree they have a vast Studio D and a smaller Studio E, plus they have rented out two sound stages from the independent Elstree Studios company for them to use. Elstree's George Lucas Studio is home to their huge Saturday night prime time show Strictly Come Dancing.

It hasn't been taken down, just refurbished. And you seriously prioritise the sexual proclivities of a few former employees (most of whose offences were actually not committed on TVC's grounds, but at the BBC Television Theatre) over the many examples of British cultural heritage produced at TVC? So what if your TV licence paid the salaries of a few paedos? Paedophiles exist in all walks of life - you might even have a few of them work in the same building or the same company as you and you might not even know it. So what's so special about the BBC paying paedophiles? As I said, paedos exist in all walks of life so they should all be treated with the contempt they deserve *equally*. A paedphile is a paedophile, no matter who employs them. And Dave Lee Travis was found not guilty of all but one charge, which was committed at Granada Television studios in Manchester. So his one crime wasn't even committed in the same studios, the same broadcaster, the same city or even the same part of the country as TVC! And all three of those people you named also worked for commercial TV and radio. You know, those companies that get money from advertising companies who include the cost of advertising in the products or services you buy (which you can't avoid paying). How do you feel about that? I'm all in favour of sticking lit blowtorches on blue flames in the faces of paedophiles as the next man or woman but you need to Get Your Facts Right. Otherwise people will just see your comment as the ill-informed drivel that it is.

I worked at TVC for over 20 years and saw nothing of the "rampant abuse", or heard nothing. I have nothing but fantastic memories of the place, from my first visit for my interview, through working in the basement in VT on 1' and 2" machines, then on to moving to the new Stage 5, on cassette based machines, D3, Digi Beta etc. Then the bean counters started getting involved and the whole thing turned to shit. The BBC has been destroyed by the internal market and through being forced to outsource lots of its work when it had its own perfect environment for making awesome TV programmes. Selling TVC was at best an act of utter stupidity, and at worse a deliberate move to weaken the BBC. It is like moving parliament to a shed in Milton Keynes and turning Westminster into posh flats no-one can afford. It should be a crime !
