Stopped paying mine 3 months ago and already had a goon visit, I opened the door he asked my name and I closed door after saying nothing to him. Now CCTV installed and I check all visitors before I answer. Goons are identified by their little black handbags they carry along with the handheld device, see them and don't answer the door.

not had a tv for over 20 yrs and yet they still call round ,plus side it gives the dogs some fun(staffys)

So what was the point in opting out using their website when they are obviously still sending you letters ? if you're going to opt out then just opt out, no need to contact them and follow their policies. I opted to not buy my shopping at Tesco's anymore but I didn't have to tell them. Stop being sheepletons.

Pinaci, I complained to trading standards for the letter misselling with wordu g on the catch up tv and harrassment with threats. Also when I went in the website to check the wording, my phone gets a message saying it is unable to take payments from Samsung device when im on a do not need to a tv licence page. Checked the wording online, checked the legislation hadn't changed. Gave bbc a chance to sort it but was hung up on. So went to trading standards, as obnusman said you have to do complaints before they can listen and I said I wasnt and dont want to be a customer of the bbc.

I phoned them, cancelled my license, received a nice refund, haven’t heard from them since.

DO NOT GO ON THEIR WEBSITE TO OPT OUT ! It will do nothing to stop the visits or letters and you giving them details will keep your address live for goon visits. DO NOTHING, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR TO THE GOONS IF YOU DO NEVER GIVE ANY DETAILS, NEVER ADMIT TO ANYTHING AND MOST IMPORTANT NEVER SIGN ANYTHING. JUST SAY NO THANKS NOW LEAVE AND CLOSE THE DOOR JOB DONE.

@@connor7342 - depends where you live. I heard they give you a few years before they start the harassment again. I’ve been wondering whether to officially opt out myself, because I haven’t watched tv for ages... but we’re not legally obliged to inform them of anything, so I may just ignore the letters.

@@Daveyengland cheers man in the future I'll just take a stand and ignore rather than either agreeing or declining, I've also just found myself able to pay my council tax, I owe two and a half grand but I just found out that loads of people don't even pay that for many years and have not had any legal action taken against them.

@@Daveyengland I don't mind paying what is due, but I've only moved into my first property 3 years ago and figuring things out but like a tv licence, if I don't need it I'm not paying for it but since I'm paying council tax I think I'll contact my local council and put in a few complaints about the state of my street since I'm now paying for its upkeep haha

Get these posted threats once a month. Have done for 6+ years. Binned like all of the other junk mail. On the few occasions I have answered the door to a goon, it is swiftly shut in their face with nothing said by me. That is the blueprint people. No contact ever, period.

I don’t pay, I prefer not to tell them and like to waste there time with letters and visits, that way while they are dealing with me some poor person isn’t getting fitted up, you do not need to tell them you don’t require a licence anymore, in the real world, they should Gould just presume that once a person stops paying, they don’t require one and just leave them alone. Don’t give authority to tv licence, a corporation with a dirty history. I’d rather flush the 154.50 down my toilet

Mate, stop wasting your time, stick the letters straight in the bin like the rest of us. I don't even open the ones I get, as soon as I see TV License it is ripped up and binned.

A few years ago I had a house in a valley, there was no TV signal! Every time I went there I had threatening letters waiting. I knew no better so complained about each one and explained that when they provided a signal I'd get a licence. In the end they said they'd leave me alone for 2 years 🙄

Joe Guitar Hi mate look an easy way out is instead of your mother paying the fee, use it to buy a Smart TV, with that you don’t need any aerial, you can open up youtube and watch all the films you need. They can’t charge you for that. For a smart TV you need internet but you can get that through personal hotspot from your mobile phone..I have been retired in Thailand for fifteen years now, should I return to the UK I would set up support groups to assist pensioners in as many areas as I could. Give pensioners a phone number and tell them, any problems give us a ring.

When I moved in to my previous address I was told I could not have sky as the building in front of my place was blocking the signal, bit of a bugger, but as the owners of said building refused to demolish their home I was stuck with no live TV. Now I do spend a fair bit of time on KZread, which increased after the loss of Sky, and it's become the norm. I have a tele in the lounge, but it rarely goes on 'till late evening when I might watch a movie on Netflix, so I have stopped paying the monthly direct debit for the licence, and wow has my fan mail increased! (Though the letters are addressed to some geezer called "The Occupier".) Being a bit of an awkward bugger at the best of times, I don't bother opening said mail that isn't addressed to me, but I do my bit and recycle said mail for weekly collection. I suspect said letters are saying something along the lines of "expect a visit from our enforcement team" but as I don't want to read the letters I can't be sure. I am however, looking forward to a visit from the team. I will record the visit and post it on KZread, on my very own site "The Beaumaris Echo", do pay a visit. I remember an occasion some thirty five years ago, I had a television, and a video player, but no aerial, sure enough, I had a visit from the enforcers, they tried everything in the book to convince me I needed a licence, but I argued I did not. Their parting shot was "This won't be the last you hear about this!" it was. So to the folks down in the other comments that say I should go and buy a licence like everyone else, I reply "NO", I'm not breaking any rules or regulations so why should I? If somebody wants to watch live television, keeping up with the soaps etc. then they should buy the license to avoid court action. But as so many of us have gone away from live tv. why should we subsidise the BBC? Thanks for taking the time to read this explanation of why I do not have a TV. licence!

i wouldn't have 'opted out' just stop all contact. Opting out gives them a reason to come to your property, & I'm sure they would find something which you should be needing a licence on. Don't risk it

You don't have to give your name when cancelling, just the address. Doesn't do much good though, they still visit and send threat-o-grams "just in case the situation has changed".

It’s funny how it doesn’t state on the letter if you don’t watch or record live TV then you don’t need a license

The best solution for these letters is: 1. Do not open them! 2. Purchase sticky labels, large enough to cover the window in the envelope 3. Stick the label over the window and address it to: Equita, 42-44 Henry Street, Northampton, NN1 4BZ 4, Purchase some 1 penny stamps from the Post Office 5. Stick a 1 penny stamp on the envelope and place the envelope in a POST BOX. 6. Do Not use the return address on the reverse of the envelope, but blank it out! On delivery of the returned letter, the post office will charge Equita, the excess postage charge for delivering the letter, due to insufficient postage! Minimum cost to you, maximum inconvenience to the Equita. If everyone does this it will cost Equita and might persuade TVL from sending these Threat-o-grams.

The more you ignore them the more letters they send the more you ignore them the worse the letters get so on and so on...then if you want after the letters and visits get worse you can then go down the blackmail and demanding money with menace route 👍👍👍 you will always win the long game if you know what your doing and believe me you don’t really need to know anything

Ignore them long enough and the cycle goes back to letter 1 in the system. You even get differenet sugnatures on the same letters after about 3 years. When i did some digging around, names like P. Hales, are just fictitious. The signatories dont even exist..just like the vans, the hand held detectors etc...Its all bollox. Ignore them.

If we ALL, instead of ripping the BBC's threatening letters up, write return to sender on the envelope and pop it into a post box, it would cost the BBC £millions and maybe they would stop sending them out.

Might be better to tear up or shred their letter first, put the bits in an envelope without a stamp and send that back. That should keep Crapita occupied for a few hours and cost them money. Wasting their time instead of yours. Enjoy

I have been through the TV licensing letter cycles many times. Just ignore all of them. They make great fire lighters.

They can't caution you, they've got no authority

So are you going to go to your local police station and fill out a form to say you are not going to burglarise your neighbours house? and are you going to sign a form to agree that you are not going to kill their dog or molest their children? Of course you are Not, will you be visited by your local Police services, just on the off chance that you might have committed an offence? will you get bombarded with junk mail from the Police to make sure you are being a good citizen? We consider all these things so ridiculous that we laugh at the absurdity of the suggestion. YET if the BBC, in league with Capita, ask us to put up with their harassment we tolerate it and go online to fill out a form to declare that we are not committing the heinous offence of watching any live TV broadcast without a TV license. Sorry! but I feel no need to declare that I am not committing a criminal offence. IF I do something wrong then Nick me and put me in front of a judge/magistrate with evidence of my wrongdoing and I will suffer the consequences of my actions. In the meantime keep out of my way. The Police understand that, and they leave me alone until they have reason to talk with me. I suggest the BBC and their agents Capita have the decency to follow the example of the local constabulary who actually have the right to question me!

What about saving the monthly letters up till you have, say six, and then post them back to yourself - keeping it going every day? Would the BBC keep paying for the postage? Then add another each month?

I'v been getting silly letters like this one for about 3 years now . They come in brown, white , and red envelopes. They are worded in different ways, stamped by compliance officers, this officer thst officer and some other one . For me it may as well be a rabbits foot print in red ink . I don't even bother opening them anymore, they used to make me smile , just got bored of the same old joke . In the recuperation bin they go , cost me nothing at all . I wonder what the cost is to them sending thousands of the things all over the place . Not that i'm arsed just curious

The letters should go in the bin unopened. It's just junk mail sent from a scummy business and should be treated as such.

This licence is outdated and a total waste of money. Its unfair to thise of us who have zero intention of watching crappy reruns on BBC and a byrden on thise on a small fxed income. It is a begative tax....the equivalent if a new tv every year. Get rid of it snd start advertising. The only people who seem to want it are those working at or for the beeb.

BBC would not need your money if they did not speed so much on this harassment.

A HMO that I lived kept sending those junk investigation letters, this went on for years, they even send their officers around but I was rarely in and when I was I never opened the door to them so they couldn't prove anyone was actually living there. I moved address and had some guy knock on my door, he assumed I was the previous tenant so I told him that he doesn't live at the address anymore, he wanted to know my name and all that but I didn't give him any information. I then filled out a form online to say that I don't require a TVL but instead of my name I put L Occupier, they then sent me one of those green letters to confirm it and haven't pestered me since.

At some point i will ditch the licence and I shall write to them once. I shall notify them that they may come in to check only on the condition that if they find evidence of tv watching I will buy a licence but if (when) they don't find any they will pay my fee of £25. Further letters will incur a £10 fee, the payment of which will be enforced, because I will have evidence of delivery. For now, sadly, I have to buy a license cos Mrs Blake still likes to watch.

Why not send their threat o'grams back to them worded not known at this address after checking the back of the envelope for the Darlington return address. The BBC know the address is live so send them back to them. If they send one saying " Are you watching?" say YES then put on the envelope every non-BBC catch-up service plus streaming service.

Don't even bother opening the letters. Never open the door to them.

This letter for a start is wrong in saying this is a TV license thats not true your alond to own a Tv, this payment is only to view the bbc channel and there iplayer NOT for the TV. No other program company gets this license money so stop paying for this crap.

Your big problem as many people is that you read the TVL letter you receive. When I receive a TVL letter I just put in the bin immediately. Fuck off any TVL letter. You can watch Netflix, KZread, play your Xbox, use a DVD player and none of those things require a license... but they all require a TV. Having said that, the licensing office will use whatever lies, intimidation or entrapment they can in order to justify taking you to court. Best thing to do if are legally unlicensed, because you don't watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer to catch up, is to ignore them. Don't answer the door. Don't reply to their letters. You are under no obligation to communicate with TV Licensing if you are legally unlicensed. If you use a TV solely for any of the above legal activities, it's none of their business. In any case, the average goon is not interested in whether you need a license or not... His job is to catch you out to fulfil his quota and get his bonus.
