Seeing the gurdwara that busy is amazing. In the 70s, going to the gurdwara every Sunday was a ritual. These days, there are so many more gurdwaras, many of them almost empty. Busy life and selfishness has taken over now ... so many people I know only go to the gurdwara when there's a wedding or parth.

Yes!!! I knew many of the these people! My family came from India in 1976, I was only four years old. The Chapeltown Gurudwara was the only in Leeds at that time. So everyone knew everyone in Leeds, it had a real community feel. We lived just off Chapeltown Road on Reginald street, only 5 mins walk from the gurudwara. Not Only did we go every Sunday to the gurudwara, my siblings and I went throughout the week in the evenings too, to learn Punjabi. I spent most of my Childhood there. Many happy memories. I even got married in the Chapeltown gurudwara in 1996, but unfortunately it closed in 1997 and a new Gurudwara was built across the the road from the old one

WE have come a long way - My parents come from Punjab to London in 1957 - I grow as child in the 60xs and we worked hard to put food on the family table and still giving back to the larger British community. Grow up in the mid 60,s my English friends older cousin decided to marry a Scott's lad... In his family, as I recall were horrified she would marry a Scott's... I at that time could not understand... slowly understand and if any one discriminated against me - I just took it that English discriminated against all Scott, Irish, and Sikhs. I often now laugh about it with my Friend and his family.

  • @mj897

Sikhs are overall wealthy in Punjab, in the uk they are second to the Jewish community in terms of wealth, and the most generous in terms of donations. Wealth is nothing to be proud of but it allows us to give to charity and give choices to children and educate our selves. Langar is not free. But as religious life starts to reduce in influence of everyday life many sikhs are very vain and flaunt there wealth with cars and drink and many other show off things. Many poor people are therefore ashamed of the lack of success and turn to crime and drugs. Gurbani tell us that to work hard and create wealth is important but humbleness must go with it. Wjkk wjkf
