'BBC Should Stop Prosecuting Audience' | Kevin O'Sullivan BLASTS TV Licence Fee
The BBC is under increasing pressure as it faces accusations of bias and calls for reform. The broadcasting corporation will now be policed by Ofcom on its news websites and social media platforms. This comes as the licence fee, which funds the BBC, is also being scrutinized, with many questioning its fairness and relevance in the modern media landscape.
One of the main points of contention is the prosecution of individuals for non-payment of their license fee. Critics argue that this is heavy-handed and disproportionate for a service that offers just television and radio channels. Instances have been highlighted where elderly individuals, often the ones who answer the door to license fee inspectors, have faced legal action for missed payments due to personal circumstances.
Kevin O'Sullivan and Alex Phillips were joined by former BBC producer John Mair, to discuss these controversial topic.

He's a Socialist, so he obviously wants other people to pay for his things.
That guy is out of touch. He needs the law explaining to him. If the government wants to gain some votes I'd ban this licence fee now and let bbc operate business like other tv channels.
i dont drive a TV IM NOT BUYING A DAMN LICENCE
We should not have to pay licence fee to watch other channels on TV, when all the money goes to the BBC to waste it.. especially Gary lineker, you can get away with saying anything you wants to........

To be fined for not watching woke being shoved down our throat is the final insult as valid non watchers are admitting to a crime under pressure such as mentally impaired or old, shocking.
Licence free coming up 11 years i stopped paying these Gangsters called Officers .wake up people and stop paying these Gangsters .if you get a knock on the door two words is all you need to say "No Thanks" and get that door shut job done
For those people that want to watch the bbc give them a choice by opting in to pay by subscription

Exactly. Just switch it off and direct people where they can go to subscribe. The reason they don't is because they know millions of viewers wouldn't bother. So they're basically scamming you.

My family and I will never ever pay BBC a penny...why would I pay for shite
Tax or fee? One you can't go to prison for not paying the other you can't. It's a TV tax ffs!! Let's call a spade a spade. It's not a "license fee". People in other countries think we're joking when they're told we can have to have a "license" to watch tv... and go to prison if we refuse. Why are we paying for repeats we have already paid for in previous years? Why doesn't any of the profit from BBC America go towards lowering the "fee"? It's time it went subscription or had advertisements. All it needs is a switchover date. 2027 sounds good and gives the BBC ample time to find alternative incomes. The current rigged system is unfair and archaic.

If enough people took a stand together I mean in the millions then the government would take notice but until we demand change nothing will unfortunately
So that bloke is all for prosecuting people for not paying a TV licence..... what a waste of time and effort when you see what's going on in this country! People need to effect change and cancel their direct debits - no need to talk to anyone or fill out any forms... joint the 80k a month already doing this!
Another far left woke BBC supporter_ he started it!
I have watched BBC World news here in America but finally stopped because I find the BBC Anti-Semitic. It’s uncomfortable to watch that kind of thing. And honestly, it makes you start doubting everything they say. I can’t imagine being forced to pay for something like that.

It's been a long, long time since I had a TV, so I had no idea they were going down 'that' path. What an embarrassment to the British nation.
The BBC could go commercial and scrap the licence. Apparently Lineker is experienced in making adverts. He could end up actually working for his ludicrous salary.
You should not be forced to pay the BBC, and a possibility of going to jail if you don't pay.... BBC must go...
I pat £7.99 a month for Netflix and there's a lot more worth watching than on the BBC

Same here, and I can stop paying whenever I want, without being threatened with court.
One of the questions that should be asked is if the licence money goes to the BBC, why should you still have to buy a licence to watch the commercial channels. That is like saying you can shop at Tesco but you have to pay Sainsburys for a licence to do so. Just doesn't make sense.
Defund him would be a good way forward. It’s just as bad as the post office scandal.

BBC advertise all over the world they don't do it in Britain
Comparing the BBC price against Netflix?? It's a choice and a lot of young people don't watch the BBC yet they are forced to pay.
He's obviously part of the BBC gravy train so he doesn't want things to change. BBC should go commercial and adopt a format like ITV X,watch free with advertising or pay a subscription to watch without advertising. Alternatively they could put all the new stuff on I player and make this a subscription service.
I haven't watched or owned a TV for 20yrs. I read books, or watch DVDs. I have no subscriptions to Netflix, or any other platform. The BBC should be in competition with other TV channels in this modern world by funding itself or fold, I doubt anyone would care a stuff.

The difference is one can choose to pay for Netflix, SKY etc etc etc... and by not paying no law is being broken!!! Cancelled my direct debit years ago and get a regular stream of the 'threatograms', never even had a knock at the door!
Point this bloke is missing is Netflix and Sky are an option.
Bbc stopped making great shows Years ago I'm Definitely glad I'm licensed free For well over 15 years Its saved me 1800 quid

Who do they think they are - The Post Office ?
A bit like the Post Office.
This makes no sense. We have to pay for the license if we wish to watch talk tv live

Looking at him: he's wearing a padded waistcoat indoors, has some sort of Communist themed poster on the wall. Probably Far Left, doesn't mind not having enough to heat his house - when he can use that heating money to listen to BBC propaganda.
You shouldn't have to pay for a TV licence are be made a criminal for not having one if you want to watch the BBC you should pay a subscription like other channels don't follow like sheep
Imagine having the luck of producing a product so bad but people have to pay it under threat of prosecution
Why is ITV and other tv companies not complaining that the fact people watching there live tv has to pay the bbc
ive never paid, 29 years and counting in my own gaff
If I had my way, the bbc would go subscription only, and would be encrypted on satellite and digital terrestrial and go behind a paywall online.
The majority of people who have a TV license are of the older generation. If these lot don’t move with the times and stop prosecuting people so heavily, they’re gonna end of with no1 wanting to watch or listen to them.
ths contempt they have for the people who fund their salaries is off the fkn scale
I didn't know it was a crime to have a TV then having to buy a TV licence glad I don't watch the BBC
how can they prosecute someone for a couple of missed fortnightly payments when those same payments are six months in advance?! At least that's how it used to be
They are certainly biased. They haven't even mentioned anything about excess death post pandemic, and only give their point of view. Even on Question time only approved questions are allowed
The BBC should only be funded by Adverts & I can't see anyone truly want pay a subscription fee to watch. I think John is deluded, the BBC do not make cracking programmes, haven't In a long time, maybe he's ok paying the fee but many aren't.
"How much do people pay for Netflix?" I pay £7-99 a month, and I can stop paying anytime I choose, without getting monthly threatening letters.
If you don't watch any live TV channels or use BBC iPlayer then you don't need to pay for a TV licence
I should not have to pay the BBC to watch other channels the BBC has nothing to instead me so why should I have to pay for it
Ofcom, is that a joke, I heard they have ex BBC staff working for them.
This guy is from a different planet, he is totally out of touch
I don't see why I should pay for Scottish news channels, if there is a need for Welsh services they have got a government who should pay for it, or Asian Networks, why is there no services in Polish or Hungarian? I don't see why I should pay Linker millions, £100,000 is more then enough for what he does.
Anyone know what's happening with Boris an rishi over the deleted texts
I ditched my TV 15 years ago and never once missed it. I didn't see the point of paying for a licence when I rarely watched it anyway. If I ever do want to watch, eg Grand Designs, I can watch whatever on catchup. I can't see the point of Netflix and the like either, as I'd much rather spend my time on KZread telling folk I have no TV 😏
In this day and age it should be subscription. If you want it. Pay for it otherwise sod em. Or just put bloody ads on like everyone else
That man is a F"&kin arse, the only channel going bankrupt when they stop the licence fee will be the shitty BBC, and the sooner the better. People need to watch chullijohncarnie on here. All about TV licence advice, when and when you don't need a licence.
Is this old git serious.
The B.B.C. have an audience?
Just stop paying it. I stopped when I worked out how much I used the BBC. I understand the rules and follow them. A tax for entertainment is morally incorrect. Let them sink or swim on subscriptions.
Eveytime a representative asks me if I have a license I ask them the same question and then waste their time explaining the history of the internet
THE LICENCE FEE DOES NOT NEED LOOKING AT, IT NEEDS TO BE "CANCELLED"
BBC should turn to Ad or Subscription. They do not making anything I watch or listen to on their Radio stations to. So I should not be forced to pay for their products that I dont use!
They're not licence fee inspectors. They're doorstep salesmen, and commission based ones at that.
There's no place for a licence fee in 2024 let alone 2027. They just make it a subscription like every other channel that charges for it's services, and those that want it can pay for it.
I don't own a television. I have a large monitor I can use for dvds and Netflix. I haven't owned a TV in over a decade and don't miss it. I don't want to contribute or associate with the BBC so I don't. The harassment I have received from the BBC even though I don't own a TV should be illegal.
I'm a millennial. And no, I don't watch coronation street, or come dancing, or the BBC cooking shows. No, I do not have a BBC license, and I do not break the law. I believe the BBC should be means testing, only those who can afford it should pay it. The letters need to be stopped, no more intimidating words, just a reminder, more like the junk mail you get from Sky or Virgin TV than a threatening legal letter. Their "enforcement department" needs to be defunded straight away, if no-ones bonuses are on the line for prosecuting viewers, we will see a dramatic drop in these disgusting court proceedings.
It did produce cracking programs, NOT anymore.
John won't be here himself for much longer what with one foot in the grave 😂😂😂
I'm wearing Alex's knickers
I have not listened to a radio station since I went on pension 15yrs ago and he only bbcrap I have watched are the quiz programmes on BBC on Tuesday nights so that priviledge is costing me almost 160pound per year daylight robbery
Yes we all agree, the bbc shouldn’t be funded by a licence fee, it would be better serviced by a levy on other media. Great idea.
I don't have a tv licence and I'm not going to get one. I have been licence free for many years because I don't watch tv but I still get those letters demanding I pay up.
If he was in hospital, and the house was empty, then he didn't need a licence, because no TV was being watched.
We don’t need the BBC
The licence fee is worth every penny, but none of the pounds.
Not had one for 10 years. Because IM LEGALLY LICENCE FREE. But that does not stop the crappy letters assuming your an "evader" and guilty. Any goon visit gets told to do one - and is filmed and put on youtube. The only mugs that get prosecuted is because they have let them in, AND OPENED their gob. They are nothing but salesman with no more power of entry than your paper boy.
It should be free for the elderly, to make them pay is fowl,
Netflix is cheaper so hes wrong anyway.
The panic in his voice when he heard no more licence fee. He's thinking about his BBC pension
So he wants subscription and a forced license fee. So people subscribe for more and still the poorest people end up penalised for not paying the basic licence.
It been 5 yrs licence free will never buy another
Does he work for bbc. I don't watch bbc, Netflix or any on a TV. I use KZread. Put a user name and password for all who what to pay. Then see who doesn't. 90% will not put there money up front.
Make the whole thing Subscription only end of story. Fat boy with the glass of wine is so obviously bias, on his licence payer funded fat pension.
the BBC DO advertise! every day on CBeebies its a day long advert for toys
Silly old Buffer !
I hate people who say "it's the law" to justify the TV license. Yeah, it's only a law because the BBC have friends in high places. It's only a law because the government _allows_ it to be. It's a privilege granted to the BBC by the government. Nothing more. The government can also take away that privilege at any time, and they often threaten to do so (which is why the BBC are so bloody terrified of ever challenging the Tories on anything, but that's a whole other story.....). If the government removed the BBC's right to charge for a license, then the BBC would lose the ability to take people to Court over non-payment, which is their main trump card in scaring people into paying. As someone who has been taken to court over non-payment of the TV license, I can say for a fact that the threat posed by it is absolutely pathetic and toothless anyway! I didn't need to attend court, and my 'fine' only ended up being about £155. Of that, £145 was _literally for a TV license!_ My actual 'fine' for non-payment.....was about £10! They essentially just forced me to buy a TV license and fined me a tenner. Absolutely pathetic. So much for "You could get fined _up to_ £1000"! Paid it off the same day and I've never been scared of them since, and never paid them another penny.
The license needs to go
Who bought in the laws so Private Companies can Sue Yes STARMER
Stop paying
Maybe in the 60s and 70s programmes in the modern century the BBC One BBC not making any good problem anymore
I wonder who will pay for his Gin & Tonic. I bet it won't be him.
Because the BBC is paid for via licence fee, it was not allowed to advertise. Like a cheating mofo, the BBC created more channels to advertise on.
Can't stand him, Mr. Woke .... Pro BBC every single time .... Talks out of his Backside and is always in total denial of just how detested the BBC are ..... 😡
they mention sky but if i decide to stop watching sky channels and stop paying they don't come knocking with menaces demanding that I pay
Cracking programmes? BBC is complete rubbish, that's why I got rid of my TV 20 odd years ago. There was 'nothing' to watch anymore, and the price of a licence wasn't worth paying for what tiny amount I did watch. And from what I gather from other people's comments, it looks like nothing has changed. It sounds to me that the BBC is okay if you enjoy a combination of sport, reality shows, panel games, endless cookery shows, boring soaps, and woke programming. Worse still, the BBC has a horrible habit of taking a personality and then putting 'him' to work presenting a whole load of other things completely unrelated to their original shows. In the 1980's, it was Terry Wogan. They did the same with that awful gardener... Alan Titchmarsh. Jonathan Ross - ugh! And worse by far - Chris Evans! After Wogan, I'd dumped my TV, but I was sick of hearing those other names mentioned everywhere, on the radio (I dumped that later too), in newspapers, magazines. I can't imagine how awful it must have been for viewers to switch on their sets or radios and find that yet another presenter they liked replaced by one of these men. I'm m happy with just KZread. Here, there are plenty of incredibly talented, independent creators like Cool Worlds and Melodysheep (astronomy based channels) or Joe Scott, Thoughty2, Canadian Permaculture Legacy, Wild Your Garden with Joel Ashton and others who 'do' focus on the things I like 'in the ways' I like to see them presented. That's the beauty of YT - if you don't get on with one channel because of the presenter's style, you can find a very similar channel run by another person who has a different style that 'does' suit. The BBC, however, finds one irritating or insipid personality, and then proceeds to copy paste him all over everything from panel games to chat shows to cookery bake offs to wildlife programmes to drama parts to music recitals, so you're never rid of his face or his voice spoiling one show after another. As for the BBC's absolutely deplorable history regarding certain personalities' 'treatment' of children, women, and the vulnerable, well that should 'never' be forgotten as a reason for not wanting to support this criminal organisation.
