BBC Newsnight (09 July 2013) Debate: Should we arm the Syrian opposition forces?
Presenting the case in favour is Sir Malcolm Rifkind (UK Foreign Secretary, ); opposing is John Baron MP.
Discussed from diplomatic, military, humanitarian and legal perspectives. Other speakers include: James Rubin (former US asst. Secretary of State), Gen Sir Mike Jackson (NATO commander in Bosnia), Lord Malloch-Brown (former UN Secretary General), and Eddie Izzard (UNICEF). Factual slots are from Mark Urban. Jeremy Paxman chairs.
(At the time of this debate, Prime Minister David Cameron favors arming the rebels, but will face opposition from his cabinet (probably), from Parliament who have been promised a vote, and from the general public also in all probability.)
This edition of Question Time (min. 30.55 onwards) also worth a watch.
• Russell Brand and Bori...
The panel there are less well informed, but the contributions from the audience give an idea how the UK feels about this question currently.

Wow, this was amazing. Why can't we have this kind of rational debate on U.S. tv?

Quite possibly, but it was 2 world wars that resulted in the downfall of the British Empire more than anything else. It would have fallen apart eventually, Empires always do, but how is another question. The fact that many of the countries previously a part of the Empire still generally run things the same way, same legal systems, identical economic models, same military structures, suggests that the fundamentals of the running of the Empire was sound.
