King is extemporaneous, and beautifully so... Clapton is reading cue cards, but I happen to know that they are words written by him, and they are elegant. In the liner notes to John Mayall's second (U.S.) Bluesbreaker LP, "A Hard Road," written around 1966, Mayall, in a (somewhat) defense of Peter Green as Clapton's replacement, from his previous line-up (and LP), says something like: "Peter, Eric, Buddy Guy, and Jimi Hendrix, I cram them all on the same pedestal." Hendrix, at that time, was a phenomenon in the U.K., but not over here. That's how far back this stuff goes. Think about that.

Buddy is my favorite tied only with Duane Allman as a guitaist, and Buddy has the added bonus of a voice as blues perfect as his musician skills. Buddy Guy is the complete package. I respect Clapton for making it clear. It seems like most people wax on about Hendrix or Clapton or other "icon" and when you say, "have you heard of Buddy Guy?" Then you get this blank stare....but slip in Sweet Tea or one of his other great albums and everything else you heard is just shattered... my favorite.

BB king and Buddy Guy were probably the only two of the most prolific legendary bluesmen left up until BB King. Just realizing that Buddy is now the king of the hill of the old school blues legends. And also, Buddy and BB represent the opposite ends of the traditional blues style spectrum. BB was 145 progression and had the tightest fastest vibrato, not complicated but perfect and could not be copied. Buddy was more flamboyant and played more areas of the neck and even was like an early template for Jimi Hendrix, his expressive play was not as concentrated into individual notes as BB, but his improv and wide range of signature idiosyncrasies in his playing made him a legend that set a foundation for hippie hard blues-rock bands to aspire to. It's just neat that the only two truly prolific blues guys left for a few years were the perfect embodiment of the opposite ends of the blues.

This is a very amazing experience for people to participate in a ceremony like this, you'd really have to earn your spot up there on stage, and then you better know what your doing and what your talking about and who you're inducting. Buddy Guy is a very important musician when it comes to blues, very real and very powerful to the point a living Boogie spirit is dwelling inside him, it has chosen to make Buddy Guy it's temple, residing inside of him, changing Buddy Guy into an extremely dangerous and powerful force capable of anything this Boogie spirit might want to accomplish. This idea comes from a theory I accidentally discovered one day while trying to teach myself how to play guitar. I think all the right people were chosen for this ceremony because all of the presenters are musical experts who deserve the privilege. They can't have some unknown host or hostess standing up at the podium, mumbling and coughing a bunch of nonsense, it would disrupt the ceremony. The audience would be lost. I'm not a blues history expert or accomplished musician but I think I know where this blues Boogie spirit comes from. It comes from extreme hardship, war, pain, and suffering so to deliver the people from tyranny and oppression, misery and sadness, due to an established political climate backed by a military that supports its laws and system. During this time, one political faction in America was of a bad spirit, oppressive, racially bias, and sadly, very brutal. This creates misery, hardship, and sadness. To make a long story short, the correct True spirit won the civil war and as a result, a very powerful boogie spirit surfaced to celebrate the victory of Freedom, a gift from God. But the video doesn't show Buddy Guy walk out to accept the honor from Eric Clapton, it just shows him hanging out back stage for about 5 seconds and that's it. In the music world, the video mentions personal appearance and presentation is very important in the music business, especially with blues and rock n roll, it's part of being an artist. I was watching Son House and noticed he was missing all his front teeth. Man, I thought that was really cool, an old blues guy with no teeth, man, I wish I looked like that. One day my wish almost came true when I asked someone to knock my teeth out so I could look like an old blues wino in the street. I actually went thru with this horrible act, but, unfortunately, I didnt get the results I was looking for, I was still a white man who cant play guitar very well, and uglier now because I'm missing teeth. I had to accept the fact that I'm never going to be an old black bluesman with no teeth, all I can do is try. I probably shouldn't have wrote this on Buddy Guy's rock n roll hall of fame ceremony, I'm sure I wrecked it by now. What kind of idiot knocks his own teeth out? Woww, sorry.

All you needed to hear was that's "HIS" Elvis. Guy "WAS" Blues for him. Also it's funny how it's they are so humble and that's how you have class ... uhhhh commenters like me obviously and everyone arguing in comment sections are the ones really giving a shit whose better or holding back blah blah... those dudes were just ripping it playing music having a blast. Plus by the time of this induction speech they had probably thousands of hours jamming through all those years. They are 3 legit friends up there lol.

I agree. I often think it is pretty poor that people can’t be bothered to prepare something….The Edge’s “ speech for example. Write a few notes ….often the speaker gets nervous. And Buddy Guy is a hero . Particularly a guy like Clapton who is naturally pretty reticent would need a few notes.

Guy is the last surviving link to so many important blues musicians now dead. He is also much more than that. He's Hendrix's mentor (& Hendrix is the fellow who blew Clapton off the stage at the aforementioned Marquis club, when on his first visit to London he asked and was allowed to jam with the Cream. Buddy Guy has all of Clapton's fingerings and more. Not meaning to demean either Clapton or King who have made such contributions to the musical world, but Guy is a bit beyond either of them.

Yes, but he wrote the speech that’s on it. Probably so he didn’t miss any names while standing up there.

@smOfficialMusic I have never......and I mean NEVER! been more insulted than I am at this very moment!!! First - you insult Belieber Nation with your jelous little statements! THEN, you dare insult The Beefman himself!!! (I'm counting to 10 right now...) The seminal impact of Justin Bieber on the arts and music in particular is undeniable!!! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a Selena Gomez greatest hits CD I'm going to listen to - I only wish it were a double cd.....

This is not true, I cannot see how can you compare .. Buddy Guy plays unique blues as well as BB and Eric, that's just different.. they're all legends. LEGENDS

Buddy is an extremely humble guy I wouldn't be surprised if he did say something to that extent but regardless his talent precedes Eric's in every way possible.

Joe Desalvatore He got those riffs from Albert King. I recall reading an article with clapton admitting that.
