The melodic vocal part I always can't help but sing along too, it's so good. Such a different contrast to the rest of the song. Oddly happy sounding, with dreary lyrics. This album is a concept album, but I can't remember exactly what it's about right now. I know it involves the occult and conjuring the devil or something. Mikael said something about taking some subject he saw as stereotypical of metal that he grew up with, and see how he would write about it as a grown man.

14:19 "I love not only how many different sections they do, but how vastly different they are in tone, in timing, in vocal... in all of it. You just never know what's going to happen." The band Between the Buried and Me is also amazing in this way. As such, I think they would make for great content for yourself to enjoy personally as well as for the channel. Sorry if there was already an acknowledgment elsewhere of this band; it just really seems like a no-brainer as they have been a staple in the prog metal scene for over a decade. For recommendations, the song Ants of the Sky would surely do well. It could be considered slightly more out there for them, but still captures their sound overall.

Keep in mind that although 'Ghost Reveries' isn't a concept album, all but the last song tell a continuous story. in 'Ghost of Perdition', protagonist kills their mother, an unspeakable crime. They think of suicide, but the Devil appears and says "You have to live before you die young". In 'Baying of the Hounds', protagonist is fleeing their crime, but the Devil is tracking them with his baying hell hounds, and sending temptation the whole time. Protagonist gets glimpses of the enormity and power of the Devil through the hounds. The first seven songs of 'Ghost Reveries' is the tale of a person committing a heinous crime, fleeing while being tempted by evil, seeking atonement and failing, seeking refuge and failing, realizing that their crime is so horrific that they will no longer be welcome amongst their fellow man, and thus saying "Eff it" and giving themselves completely over to evil by selling their soul to the devil. My interpretation, YMMV.

You still have a long Opeth journey to go, it’s rewarding and excellent. I seriously think you would love the band Swedish band Soen when you can squeeze a personal listen in. “Positive Affirmations” XD “you are everything, they are nothing” That line is actually saying the protagonist of this album is the monster and problem. Constantly condemning others, never looking within to see his possession. As others react to his atrocity, “forced to confront your enemies,” they follow him into the mire and drown in such dark desires. This cycle culminates in Harlequin Forest, where he burns the village, the forest, and even the food that would sustain the survivors. Imo burning all 3 makes me think about how they together create a self propagating system, like revenge.

Axe is fantastic, and might be a better technical drummer, his work in pale communion is fantastic. But there was something special about Martin Lopez drumming that’s so memorable, it’s a feel, groovy, with Latin sprinkles and tasteful cymbal and bass drum work. Axe although good, sometimes sounds like he’s trying to add too many notes. Sometimes the space or silence in between notes matter just as much as the notes.

  • @lukesabin691

@@soakedbearrd Agreed that rests/silence is equally important. But Axe’s fills, grooves, left hand ghost notes, double kick playing, dynamic right hand patterns on the ride and hi-hat, accent patterns, etc. ad infinitum are superior. Especially when you see that Axe played as well if not better live than on studio recordings. Lopez was borderline awful live, and sometimes in studio (see Amon Amarth’s first record) dude couldn’t even play in time.

Though while a bad poem is nothing, a good song with bad lyrics is still a good song. And I wouldn't wish the voice-instrument away.
