Awesome! Now it makes sense to do the next song "Beneath the Mire" which is also mentioned in this song.
The melodic vocal part I always can't help but sing along too, it's so good. Such a different contrast to the rest of the song. Oddly happy sounding, with dreary lyrics. This album is a concept album, but I can't remember exactly what it's about right now. I know it involves the occult and conjuring the devil or something. Mikael said something about taking some subject he saw as stereotypical of metal that he grew up with, and see how he would write about it as a grown man.
Love the opening groove in this song, so good.
Try "Faith in others" by them already!!! :)

Martin Mendez is so low key but so talented. One of my favorite bassists. Mikaels growls are amazingly clear when you see them up against the lyrics. Btw love the edits, you are hilarious and real.

This had IMPACT!!! 😁
Love this song
"so, I just sort of picked one" haha lovely
"Everything you believed is a lie." This one just sums up the vast majority of humanity perfectly. 😁 Moog is, as you said, a very particular kind of synthesizer. They started analog and have a really rich fat tone. It was also an NHL goalie, Andy Moog!!! 🏒
Master's Apprentices is a must listen . I think its will be in your top 5 Opeth songs
Beneath the mire or the grand conjuration next !
I picked up an Opeth disc on a whim from the Ghost Reveries album cover... Baying of the Hounds was the track that sold me on the band.
Most underrated song Funeral Portrait
14:19 "I love not only how many different sections they do, but how vastly different they are in tone, in timing, in vocal... in all of it. You just never know what's going to happen." The band Between the Buried and Me is also amazing in this way. As such, I think they would make for great content for yourself to enjoy personally as well as for the channel. Sorry if there was already an acknowledgment elsewhere of this band; it just really seems like a no-brainer as they have been a staple in the prog metal scene for over a decade. For recommendations, the song Ants of the Sky would surely do well. It could be considered slightly more out there for them, but still captures their sound overall.
The Grand Conjuration is a great song to react to!
One of their best but underrated songs. Please do Beneath the Mire next, to complete the 3 first songs on Ghost Reveries album. This song is literally referencing the next one:)
Imagine listening to the first 2 songs of this album on the release day in 2005 after getting your copy. Not that they wouldn't have done that before in Still Life and BWP
I'm not sure that outside of some 70ies fusion jazz/rock stuff I've heard a more atmospheric band than Opeth. And it doesn't get old play after play. Thanks- I'm always here for your Opeth experiences.
That was...a lot! Mikael writes his lyrics, right? But, does The Demon write his own lyrics? Lol! I picture Mikael writing in jeans and a t-shirt, with a pen and paper, and The Demon writing in a 10, 000 year old black cloak with a hood, with the blood of the damned on scorched flesh, of the same damned. Sweet dreams! : )
Keep in mind that although 'Ghost Reveries' isn't a concept album, all but the last song tell a continuous story. in 'Ghost of Perdition', protagonist kills their mother, an unspeakable crime. They think of suicide, but the Devil appears and says "You have to live before you die young". In 'Baying of the Hounds', protagonist is fleeing their crime, but the Devil is tracking them with his baying hell hounds, and sending temptation the whole time. Protagonist gets glimpses of the enormity and power of the Devil through the hounds. The first seven songs of 'Ghost Reveries' is the tale of a person committing a heinous crime, fleeing while being tempted by evil, seeking atonement and failing, seeking refuge and failing, realizing that their crime is so horrific that they will no longer be welcome amongst their fellow man, and thus saying "Eff it" and giving themselves completely over to evil by selling their soul to the devil. My interpretation, YMMV.
You still have a long Opeth journey to go, it’s rewarding and excellent. I seriously think you would love the band Swedish band Soen when you can squeeze a personal listen in. Reasons are excellent bass, the drummer from this song (Martin Lopez) is a founding member of the band, they don’t have demon, they have some Toolish vibes but are their own band and there is some ticklish hair.

great soen songs: god's acre, martyrs, dissident, monarch, modesty, antagonist
The first time I heard this song, which was the second Opeth song I ever listened to: ..transition.. Me: Cool, that's kind of a happy, peppy groove. Mikael, singing upbeat and with heart: "Everything you believed is a lie, everyone you loved is a death-burden..." Me: Oh. Well then. And I've loved it ever since.
I wish I could use descriptive writing in my comment, but yeah, I'll need more time in the classroom for that to happen. 🙄 I'll just have to go with my usual... your style of listening, dissecting, reacting, and engaging the viewer is the BEST!

in the line of type o negative there is "Danzig" you will get a lot of fun and you will be surprise with that voice maybe you could start with "i dont mind the pain"
other epicness and best keyboard you may find is in "Nightwish" but be sure to hear the Floor Jansen version not the other singers, you could start with "gost love score" from buenos aires concert or with the "endless forms most beautiful" album, first album with Floor
Good shit!!!! You are so much more comfortable in your reactions. It's a great song, my favorite on the album. other master band above all others but differen genre is "therion" a ton of master pieces all "vovin" album "deggial" an so on. I would recommend start with "via nocturna" or maybe a more standard song "rise of sodom and gomorrah"

“Positive Affirmations” XD “you are everything, they are nothing” That line is actually saying the protagonist of this album is the monster and problem. Constantly condemning others, never looking within to see his possession. As others react to his atrocity, “forced to confront your enemies,” they follow him into the mire and drown in such dark desires. This cycle culminates in Harlequin Forest, where he burns the village, the forest, and even the food that would sustain the survivors. Imo burning all 3 makes me think about how they together create a self propagating system, like revenge.
You have to understand the over-arching story of the demon and his mother that threads this album to fully grok these lyrics
Not a timpani, just his floor tom. Toms aren't typically tuned to pitch, unless you're Terry Bozzio.
other opeth song you will love is "closure" (no demon). you should watch all the Shepherd's Bush Empire concert at least the songs you have reated already, they are better than the album versions. in that concet you will have the no fade end for "a fair judgement" and is the best song end i know. last my favorite opeth song is "the drapery falls" that you have already reacted to.
you should also check out caligula's horse, prog metal band, i recommend you start with dream the dead and the hands are the hardest
if you like challenges react to "greatest show on earth" a 24 minutes Nightwish song and best song ever composed (sorry to exagerate but is my number one)
martin lopez was the best drummer that opeth ever had saddly they lose him, you may look deeper into his enormous influence in the opeth style he deserves a complete reaction video as well
It might have been me when you said the band that you like to react to the best is Opeth because you never know what to expect

The only thing that bothers me is the wrong use of prepositions like "inflict harm to others" instead of "on others" haha, there are a couple examples in Mikaels lyrics but he is not a native speaker so fair enough. My absolute favorite band of all time.

Axe is fantastic, and might be a better technical drummer, his work in pale communion is fantastic. But there was something special about Martin Lopez drumming that’s so memorable, it’s a feel, groovy, with Latin sprinkles and tasteful cymbal and bass drum work. Axe although good, sometimes sounds like he’s trying to add too many notes. Sometimes the space or silence in between notes matter just as much as the notes.
@lukesabin691
Жыл бұрын
@@soakedbearrd Agreed that rests/silence is equally important. But Axe’s fills, grooves, left hand ghost notes, double kick playing, dynamic right hand patterns on the ride and hi-hat, accent patterns, etc. ad infinitum are superior. Especially when you see that Axe played as well if not better live than on studio recordings. Lopez was borderline awful live, and sometimes in studio (see Amon Amarth’s first record) dude couldn’t even play in time.
