Baucham, Nichols, Sproul, Sproul Jr., and Thomas: Questions and Answers #2

Ойын-сауық

During our 2014 National Conference Voddie Baucham, Stephen Nichols, R.C. Sproul, R.C. Sproul Jr., and Derek Thomas answered questions ranging from how God views the elect before they are saved, defining a Reformed view of speaking in tongues, and how to know if we've truly "repented enough."
Questions:
1. Athanasius confronted the issue of the deity of Christ. What is the strongest enemy the church faces today? (00:00)
2. If God wants us to spend all eternity with Him, why didn't He just put us with Him from the beginning? (08:43)
3. How do we deal with knowing some of our loved ones may be headed to perdition? (11:29)
4. Since we are chosen before the foundation of the world, how does God view us before we are born again? (15:30)
5. Dr. Baucham, you said that you had overcome numerous struggles as a married adult man due to not having your father around when younger. I can relate. Can you talk about this a bit? (16:42)
6. I am trying to reconcile the death of my son. How do I deal with my anger against God experienced as I am in this dark time? (20:08)
7. Since God is slow to anger and patient, why, when man first sinned, was His wrath and punishment so severe? (23:19)
8. What is the minimal amount of gospel truth that must be believed to be saved? (25:43)
9. How can we overcome the view that the OT portrays an unloving and ungracious God? (29:25)
10. Can you discuss the relationship between God's sovereignty in salvation and man's responsibility? (33:30)
11. What is the balance between standing for truth and maintaining the unity of the Spirit? (34:08)
12. About Luther's anti-Semitism seen in his writings-How can these attitudes and actions of the father of the Reformation be justified? (38:26)
13. What is the Reformed view of speaking in tongues? (43:20)
14. Given that we are not of the world, but sent into the world, what should our political involvement be, particularly for moral issues? (46:22)
15. I have a friend who says she is saved but has no need for the church. How can I help her return to church? (49:00)
16. How can pastors encourage their flocks to engage the world in the most effective way in the public square? (52:04)
17. Is repentance more than a change of mind? How can I know that I've repented enough? (53:52)

I couldn't agree more. It reminds me of Jeremiah 17:9-10, “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings." and Mark 10:18, “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good-except God alone.". That Yeshua, as the son of G-d who knew no sin, pointed to His (our) Abba as the only one who is good, and knowing that man's heart is deceitful and wicked by default is all I need to know what we are all capable of under the Adam federal headship. We are at war with it every day in different ways and will continue to until our race is finished. Presenting our vessels to Him, and asking Him to search and know our ways, that He may cleanse us from all unrighteousness with the blood of His only begotten son, and asking His Holy Spirit to fill our spirit and soul with His water of everlasting life that it may overflow into our heart and our mind that it may produce the fruit of the spirit in our lives and shine His light to the world while preserving His word and truth with His salt is a never-ending process and practice. Dr Bauchaum is such an incredible blessing, along with Dr Sproul and all of the other panelists.

As Voddie articulated very well. It all comes down to the "man" centeredness of the world. The only way to overcome the world is to recognize that within ourselves is the problem. Our propensity for evil, and our lack of desire to recognize this within ourselves is the sum of the problems we face. The very definition "of the world," biblically speaking; is so wedded in us that to come out of it is simply impossible without a mighty work of God. Those outside of the Faith never understand when I comment to them that they make themselves a god in denying God. That by usurping the work of God, they themselves have defined the relative work of "good" as personal, therefore denying the relative work of God as impersonal, thus improbable.

king bibibear I believe it is once saved always saved. Once we belong to God, no one can snatch us out of his hand. Those who go on living in sin after they are “saved”, are not actually saved. Those who are truly saved are those who hate sin, and turn away from it.

king bibibear I don’t see what your point is? That verse goes right along with the verse in 1 John. True, sanctified, redeemed, regenerate Christians are who bare fruit. They are truly Christians. The ones who don’t and get cut off and thrown away are false converts. They are not true Christians. They never belonged to the faith to begin with. That’s what Jesus is addressing here. It also goes along with Matthew 7:21-23. True Christians cannot lose their salvation. The ones who get cut off, or are apostate or anything like that we’re never Christians. The Bible is very clear on that.

I know I'm saved but know my pops isn't. Hurts, but it's his choice to be foolish. I'm grateful that our Father blessed me with my dad and I'm really trying. Sometimes I think the seed will sprout and other times s I see nothing but pride. He'd be the very first to tell you that " he's a good man" when you all know none of us are. He blaspheme on purpose Sometimes just to make me cringe. But, all I can do is love him even broken. Praise be to God for Voddie being at this conference for this reason, so many Arminians want to put down Calvin for the things they may have read about happening in his life that were sinful, as if, they themselves are not sinners. The bottom line is this, is what Calvin preached and taught, Biblical? Does it line up with the will of God and if you are being honest you would have to answer YES. Arminians want to try and expose this man’s sin’s without first emptying their own closets of which in itself is sin because of un-righteous Judgement (Matt 7:3)

In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:3‭-‬14 ESV bible.com/bible/59/eph.1.3-14.ESV And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience- among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved- and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:1‭-‬10 ESV bible.com/bible/59/eph.2.1-10.ESV There are many many verses like these. 🙂I would encourage you to read the passages regarding Gods sovereignty and man's bondage to sin.🙏 I think you will find the bible is very clear about man's inability to choose to believe before he is changed by God. How can that which does not believe change to a state of belief when it is dead?🤷‍♂️

You are at war with the catholics and I'm with you on that but why is it that you follow them on the sabbath change?? The catholics boost about changing it right in our faces and even say that it proves their authority on doctrine cause all the protestants went right along with them!!! If you love me keep my Commandments! Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy! God never changes!! He surely didn't change the sabbath!! The Bible says that his chosen people, his remnant church will be the church that keeps the commandments! If you break one you break them all!! Just wondering if you're going to study that doctrine?? Or, are you going to do what the catholic church wants you to do??I hope you wake up!

God had us with Him from the beginning in Garden of Eden. He had direct fellowship with us, but the sin (disobedience & rebellion) of Adam & Eve. We got us separated from the presence of God. God is Holly can not face sin. Now He has extended His mercy and sent His Son Jesus to get give us a 2nd chance. It's up to us to receive His mercy or reject it. But if we reject Him this time around, we'll have to face the consequences, wrath of God. Some people say, "what if is not real?" I would say, "better have it and don't need it than need it and don't have it. As the old saying, better be save than sorry. It is literally true in this case. May God Bless you all.

Absolutely , nobody capable to come or choose God by human ability. Man always chooses wrong way . The only way Man becomes save because God forgive their sins.People’s become save not because they receive Jesus , because God forgive their sin , God action is count not our actions . That’s why most teaching now days we have to receive Jesus in order to become save .

Voddie nailed it... "We're assuming, that number one, that there are some Christian writers, leaders, historical figures out there that weren't sinners...right, 'cause whatever Luther wrote, here's a news flash-- what he thought was worse. I'm not talking about this issue, I just mean in general. He was a sinful man. He SAID sinful things, he THOUGHT sinful things, he DID sinful things- BUT SO ARE YOU. And It's always ironic to me that people want to dismiss Luther or Calvin or Edwards or whoever, because of some issue that they find out about in their lives, BUT they don't DISQUALIFY themselves for things they THINK and SAY and DO. The fact of the matter is, you know, God's never used a sinless man to write things for us. All of them are sinners. Um, so, unless you are getting ready to dismiss everything that's ever been written. Um, be real careful about whether or not somebody writing something true and helpful should be dismissed because they there are areas in their in life where they were inconsistent and hypocritical, because that's ALL OF US. " AMEN!

I'm pretty sure Luther, Calvin, Edwards, etc. would have some concerns with you and RC Jr sexting pics of your genitalia to each other while you were still married to another man (ref: Spinderella Sproul). They'd also have an issue with RC encouraging you to divorce your husband so he could marry you, a 3x divorcee, as did his Presbytery. So rather than submitting to them he bailed and demitted his ordination. But hey, we're all sinners! Hypocrisy normalized. So it's all good!

Lisa, ever since you and RC married 4 years ago you've been spinning your duplicitous "restoration narrative." Those of us who've personally known and worked with RC many years before you ever met him concluded that RC is a reprobate. Or as his close friend, and the man that ordained him in the Covenant Presbyterian Church, James McDonald stated, "RC Jr is a wolf in sheep's clothing." We can debate that if you like. What isn't debatable are the biblical requirements for ministry (Titus 1:5-9, 1 Tim. 3:1-7). RC fails to meet even one of those criteria, let alone all of them. None of those biblical standards require sinless perfection. It only requires a few basic things like moral integrity and a good reputation, the very things RC has proven by his unremitting scandals that he's devoid of. There are obvious reasons you've gotten so much push back on RC restoring himself to ministry. Contrary to your victim complex it has nothing to do with "we're being persecuted." Calling himself "Pastor" and "Rev." doesn't make it so. In addition to RC's multitudinous biblical disqualifications, he's not ordained. Demitting his last ordination so he could marry you, a 3 time divorcee, guarantees he'll never find a sympathetic denomination to ordain him again. You need to face the reality that RC will never be welcomed to be a minister of the gospel again, not in respectable company anyway. You're living in denial of the obvious. Either that or you already know these things but see certain advantages, likely financial, in continuing in your misguided _ministry_ fantasy. For example there's RC's weekly video in which he grifts for "donations" ostensibly to buy a very expensive piece of land to build a church on. Pretty obvious it'll take $millions. Not a chance anywhere near that much will ever come in. But maybe a few hundred thousand? Based on his history we already know where the donations go -- right in RC's pocket. So just anticipate getting lots more push back from those of us who see it for what it is -- a scam. RC Sproul Jr needs to face facts. It's well past time he sit down, shut up, and take a seat in the pews next to the rest of us. Time to get an honest day job where any further scandals he causes won't bring further shame and disgrace to the church.

I don't know if you know the Lord Jesus Christ or not, but if you can read online The Bible Knowledge Commentary, this passage and context will become more clear to you. God had given to Israel a covenant full of promises but also warnings. But when the warnings weren't heeded, God made another covenant called the New Covenant. Read about it.

I love this question which begins this discussion I would state: defining sin That's something that is a core issue. You can't see it taste it touch it or locate it. Yet it exists and hamartilogy (the study of sin) is missing from any and all understanding. What is it? I would add it's temporal and God is eternal. He alone is altogether separate. He is not like man. He is not equal. Righteousness and Evil are not competing and definitely not equal. That is the core issue and missing from and leading to all these other others we struggle in and with.

Tongues are different languages - English, Spanish, German, French.... And Scripture states that there must always be someone there to translate that which was spoken. Think of it - God is not the author of confusion. So why would anyone pray with me in a tongue that I do not understand? It only proves to me that the person is more focused on self than God Almighty.

  • @sylvestre9440

On some things - such as the question from Jesse, age 8: "If God wants us to spend all eternity with Him, why didn't He just put us with Him from the start?" - it is better to be humble and honest and say, "I/We just don't know." R.C., God rest his soul, gives a catechetical (?) answer. W-a-y too simplistic. (R.C. Jr.'s answer, although a bit more thoughtful, was no better.) Some things are mysteries and decisions known only to God. The "to bring glory to Himself" answer is - again - very simplistic and only reveals what God will do through the situation, not why the situation was the way it was or is what it is. God will work all things together for good (Romans 8:28-29) even given this truth - that we were not created "already fixed." Why did God allow for it to be this way or possibly establish, begin or plan it that way??? We don't really know. But, we DO know that He will glorify Himself by His interaction with every human being through it. And, I might also say that his answer to the man who expressed that he was struggling with anger at God over his son's death was - although academically correct - absolutely heartless, brazen, arrogant and lacked empathy. With all due respect, he might have benefited more from CPE than a Ph.D.
