Battling with Alzheimer's disease: Zahra Moussavi at TEDxWinnipeg

Battling with Alzheimer's Disease: Ideas on early detection, treatment and prevention: Zahra Moussavi at TEDxWinnipeg
For decades the conventional wisdom of neuroscience held that our brain is hardwired, fixed and immutable, but new findings in the last 20 years leave no doubt that - on the contrary - our brain is dramatically plastic; it can adapt, rewire, heal, renew, and, even into old age, not only change its structure but also generate new neurons. It is important to realize that as frightening as Alzheimer disease is, according to Dr. Whitehouse, a prominent neuropsychologist at Johns Hopkins University, "it is not even a single condition to be called a disease; therefore searching only for biological solutions (i.e., medications, gene therapies) is a false hope." We have to think of brain health and preventing dementia as a lifetime perspective that pays much more attention to the quality of our environment than the quality of our genes. The key to future solutions for healthy brain aging is going to be a multidisciplinary approach. We know that significant rehabilitation changes in the brain can occur across life - basically to the end of life.
Dr. Moussavi is a Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Engineering with special interest in early diagnosis of Alzheimer's and neurorehabilitation. She is also an expert in sleep apnea and respiratory sounds analysis. Human diseases and neurological disorders are betrayed by symptoms that can be detected by biomedical technologies. Dr. Moussavi has developed novel technologies to be used for early detection of dementia in general and Alzheimer in particular, home-care devices for rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries, quick and simple screening methods for sleep apnea detection during wakefulness and also non-invasive technique for detecting swallowing disorders. As varied as her focused research area may seem, they all share the same thread of development of biomedical technologies for non-invasive and early detection of diseases that are challenging to be diagnosed. The key outcome of her works is to improve quality of life especially for aging population.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I cared for Rose who had dementia. It was the most challenging time of my life as she reverted back to WWII when she was a teenager (this is in The Inspired Caregiver book). Her mental health was like swiss cheese: one moment she was seemingly fine, the next she fell down a hole and didn't know the year, where she was, etc. She screamed at me for not informing me that her mother just passed away (her mother passed away 10 years previous, and SHE attended her memorial). The Inspired Caregiver was written for the health of the caregiver. It has a caregiver pledge to repeat daily along with affirmations and good tips. As far as I am concerned, we all need to eat food that is excellent for the brain. Zahra is funny! I love her in-love joke! Great tips! When Rose and I were driving, and Rose thought we were in Hawaii when we were really in California, I went along with it. It is much easier than arguing with her. Alzheimer's patients can get embarrassed and verbally abuse you. Dr. Zahra Moussavi, I hope you find a cure for Alzheimer's soon! Thank you for a wonderful TED Talk.

To find the link for the memory exercises that I referred to during this talk, you may search on Google by typing: "Moussavi Brain exercises"; usually the first page found is the right one. KZread does not let me to post the link in the comment here!

Hi Zahra, thanks so much for your Ted Talk, very wonderful and it gives hope to the Alzheimer patients, I did the test on the brain memory, I did not get a perfect score, what does that mean?

Hi Catriona, please first let me know what memory test you took, and your age. It may mean nothing really. There is not one test that can determine a decline for sure. We run several parallel and independent tests to identify a brain function decline.

*So sad, but anyone who has looked after a loved one with dementia will know how hard it is physically and mentally. My heart goes out to anyone/everyone affected by Alzheimer/Dementia. A huge shout out to any caregiver doing this alone! I feel your journey. I feel your pain because I've been there. My mom was also diagnosed in her 60s. Feeling absolutely shattered, heartbroken and drained , working with different physicians across the country with little or no improvement. I was exhausted and overwhelmed to look any further. Crying a lot through frustration, anger and despair, But today with the help of Homeocure Worldwide Natural Medicine, my mother is completely healthy and well again. I think we only need more support and sunlight to overcome this dreadful disease. Search for support regardless and don't stop until you get it. With Homeocure Worldwide treatment, there is hope, don't give up! contact them on their youtube channel for more info*
