Battlestar Galactica: Colonial Viper And Launch Pad Diorama | RESIN PRINT |

Ойын-сауық

This video I build the Viper from 1978's Battlestar Galactica which happens to be one of the favorite classic starships. I even add some custom modified parts to the build.

I consider the 1978 series to be the real Battlestar Galactica. Some may feel free to disagree but to me, the show was the TV version of Star Wars. I bought the whole series on DVD a while back and enjoyed watching every episode. George Lucas even copied some of the BSG hangar scenes for the prequel trilogy! I noticed that right away and thought it was cool that he did that. Turnabout is fair play. I totally dig the build video, great work!

Great job on the build. The Colonial Viper is my favorite design of the classical sci fi ships from the late 70s early 80s period. Over the X-Wing and the star fighter from Buck Rogers. Probably because of its angular, semi-aggressive appearance and low-profile. Versus the wider winged X-wing and Star Fighter ships.

Excellent work! Your Viper diorama looks great! I have a soft spot in my heart for the original BSG, maybe because I grew up in that era. 3D printing technology is amazing, scale up or scale down, scale to your exact specifications and the sky is the limit as to what subjects can be made! I look forward to seeing what you'll do next! Will it be Space: 1999? Captain Scarlet? Joe 90? Transformers? Star Trek? Keep us posted!

Man, that really turned out great. I love the level of detail in this. Pretty glad I stumbled acorss your channel. One question for you, regarding your Vallejo paints, what do you use to clean out your airbrush with? Personally I use both Vallejo and Tamiya but I find the Vallejo tends to gum up the airbrush when I try and clean it, even if I am using the Vallejo airbrush cleaner. Similar experiences for you? I love the colors Vallejo offers but the Tamiya is just so damn easy to clean up! Tamiya airbrush cleaner is the bomb!

Very nice. When I watched the show, I never understood where the vipers launched from. They never really showed that in the series, they just showed a vague overhead shot of them flying out. It wasn't until I got the model kit of the Galactica that I realized that the launch tubes were angled along the outside of the landing bays.

@@ScaleModelGeek Most of the shots of the vipers launching would show a top view of the front of the port (left) landing bay and the vipers would fly out at about a 45 degree angle. It always looked to me like they were coming from under the ship. On the model, as poorly detailed as it was, there are a series of angled notches on the side of each landing bay. That's when it dawned on me that those are where the launch tubes are.. At first glance, I thought the image at 0:10 in the video was a top view of the landing bay, with the angled portions at the top and bottom being the sloped sides. Looking at it more closely, I realize that the camera is sitting in the end of one of the launch tubes, looking toward the next one. The middle section with the stripe is an angled wall, separating the launch tubes, below that is the "floor" that the camera is sitting on, and above that is the "ceiling". If the camera were to pan to the right (in universe), you'd see the red-lit triangular end of a launch tube. I guess they didn't have the budget to build a model that could show a viper actually emerging from a launch tube.

If you ever want to recoup some of your costs I would be interested in buying the printed Viper and cockpit/pilot pieces. 1/32 is good as it would match up with my Mobius kits to a degree.

Good job, I made the entire 1/32 launch ramp and bay area. When I was in the process of 3D printing mine, I had to order all of the figures from an online store in the UK, and being from the US, it was costly plus they only sold the figures and not .stl files. I see your file for the pilot but was wondering where you got the helmet from.

Great Job on the Build, One question where did you find the file for the helmet, I didnt see it in any of the link to the modified parts. Also I would have printed the Lift platfrom on its side instead of upright. Less supports needed and most of the supports connections would have been hidden in the inside of the rails

As good as the 2003 TV series was of Battlestar Galactica, the 1978 will always have a certain charm to it. Did you prefer the spacecraft for the original or the re-imagined 2003 version?

  • @och70

This was really great work. I definitely prefer the 1978 version. I was seven or eight years old at that time, and I loved the show. I did 3D models of the Colonial Viper and the Cylon Raider for my portfolio. They were modeled and UV mapped in Maya, then textured and rendered in Substance Painter. I found the most enjoyable part of the texturing process to be making them look "dirty", not like they were fresh off of an assembly line, but like they had seen some action.

@@ScaleModelGeek Yeah, I've seen some very cool documentary videos about it. If I'm remembering correctly, the ILM guys didn't have Lucasfilm's permission to use that equipment, so they had to stop, or there was going to be legal trouble. They had to use a lot of recycled shots of the ships for dogfights, etc., because of that.

I like the 2003 version, but I actually prefer the older designs, and upon rewatching the 2003 version recently, I started to feel like it was "too grounded" for its own good, using bullets and stuff in space is a pretty silly idea even in fiction (I know the HALO and Warhammer 40K nerds will want to throw hands over that) plus you really could tell the writers had no clue (which they admitted) over what to do when it came to long term arcs (of course it never got as silly as Galactica 1980 but it wasn't to far off with some of the mystical final five stuff)

Correct but it came out as a movie first in some foreign countries. Glen Larson had envisioned Battlestar Galactica as a series of made-for-TV movies (a three-hour pilot program and two two-hour episodes) for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). A shortened version of the three-hour pilot, Saga of a Star World, was screened in Canadian theaters (before the TV series was telecast) and in American, European and Australian theaters later on. Instead of two additional TV movies, ABC decided to commission a weekly TV series of one-hour episodes.

Firstly Alains files show that that piece the canopy fixes to has a hinge at one end, it looked like you didnt have that part or you put it in backwards, secondly why break the seat to get it out when you just needed to cut or break the part you are removing.

Nice models, but that guy needs to take some feedback from actual model builders on how to separate parts so they can be painted. I can't imagine painting that cockpit the way it comes and at $50 it's a bit expensive to have to mess around with to make it an enjoyable build.
